Are there any sacrifices that our government expects us to make for the greater good of the entire society? Chapter 3 Why was Luke forbidden to play in rooms with uncovered windows? Why was the location of the back vent important to Luke? Chapter 4 Why did Luke suddenly have to stop eating meals with the rest of the family?

Do you think Luke s parents should feel guilty for the life their son must lead? Chapter 5 Why did the official letter Dad received spell trouble for the family? Chapter 6 From whose point of view is this story told? Why do you think the author chose this point of view? How did Mother plan to ease the family s money troubles? Why did her decision trouble Luke?

Chapter 7 How were the Barons different from other people Luke knew? Why did Luke tell his mother that he no longer needed to be tucked in at bedtime? What does this reveal about him? How is the Sports Family s house different than Luke s? Chapter 15 What did Jen reveal about the punishment facing the families that had a third child?

Do you think Jen will put Luke s life at risk or improve his life? Chapter 16 If you were a hidden child, do you suppose you would behave more like Luke or more like Jen? What did Jen do for Luke at the end of the chapter? Why does she do it? Chapter 17 What does Jen think about the government and what is her plan to confront it?
