More than Enough: For Me to Rest A Guided time of Quiet and Solitude Creating Space to Come Close to God and Find Rest We live in a loud and distracting world. Sitting still for a bit of time can feel daunting. But don t panic this handout will guide you. Silence your cell phone and find a quiet place to be alone. God wants us to draw near to Him. We see this over and over again in scripture and in fact, it is the very center of the gospel that Christ came into the world to make a way for us to come close to God despite our brokenness. This morning we want to create a space to hear from God about the peace and rest to be found in closeness with Jesus. First thing s first: Take a moment to receive Christ s invitation to come to Him. Perhaps even close your eyes, imagine yourself sitting near to Jesus as he speaks these words to you. Come to me. If you are weary. If you are burdened. Come to me and find rest. If it helps, speak the words softly aloud. It s easy for our minds to wander when we get quiet. We re so used to the loudness of this world that quieting our minds often feels uncomfortable. Take a moment to give your distractions, worries, and anxieties to God. If it helps, use the space below to make a list, write a prayer, or even draw a picture, releasing your thoughts to Jesus and coming near to him.

Two Promises of Rest We re going to take a closer look at Christ s invitation and the subsequent promises He makes. Take some time to read through the passage below. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. - Matthew 11:28-30 Mark all actions/verbs in the passage by underlining them. Mark all adjectives by circling them. Mark any repeating words by drawing a box around them. What commands/invitations does Jesus give? What does Jesus promise? Jesus mentions experiencing rest twice in this passage. What is different about the two rests he mentions? How do we experience the first rest? The second?

The Rest that Comes to Us When We Come to Him There is rest in coming to Christ; the rest of a quiet conscience which gnaws no more; the rest of a conscious friendship and union with God, in whom alone are our soul s home, harbor, and repose; the rest of fears dispelled; the rest of forgiveness received into the heart. - A. MacLaren The first rest Jesus offers...the rest of Come to me, is the rest we experience when we make a decision to trust Him and put our faith in Him as our savior. What was your life like before you first answered Jesus invitation to come to Him in faith? What burdens, hardship, suffering, sin were you stuck in? What did you experience as a result of trusting Jesus with your life? Thank God in this moment for drawing you near to Him through Jesus. Perhaps you have never come to Jesus in faith and trusted him with your life. Get quiet for a few moments. Allow yourself once again to hear His invitation. He stands ready to receive you, no matter what your life has looked like to this point. If you d like, you can pray now on your own, Jesus, I need you. I want the rest only you offer. I want to come to you. I want you to be my savior and king.

The Rest that Comes Even Though Life is Still Hard Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Jesus gives two instructions here. The first is to take on his yoke; the second, to learn from him. But how does taking the yoke of Jesus upon us help us find rest for our souls? The truth is, we all carry burdens of some kind...all of the time. Yes, it would be lovely to be able to rid our lives of all work and responsibility and hardship and brokenness and sin and suffering. But until Jesus calls us home, we live here, in the world, with lots and lots of all of those things. What are things in life that can cause you to be weary and heavy laden? What are you tempted to count on to help you bear this load (career success, your marriage, how thin or pretty you are, how much money you make, sheer grit/ determination)? What would it look like to give that to Jesus? Here is the great news: Jesus wants us to lay down our burdens and take up HIS yoke. Our savior who is God invites us to share His yoke! When we understand this, it s no longer a matter of what we carry, but who it is who walks with us. We do not carry our burdens alone, but alongside God himself.

Scripture for Reflection and Meditation Read the following passages and circle/underline what they say about the God whose yoke we share. The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isaiah 40: 28-31 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. Psalm 90:2 What does God s greatness, power, and unchanging nature mean for you as you seek rest for your soul?

Read the following passages and circle/underline what they say about what Jesus shares with us when we take up His yoke. But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. Isaiah 53:5 These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world. John 16:33 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:57 And walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God. Ephesians 5:2 Therefore, my friends, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you. Through him everyone who believes is set free from every sin, a justification you were not able to obtain under the law of Moses. Acts 13:38-39 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. John 1:18 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. John 8:12

Visualize Taking On Christ s Yoke Take a moment to think about the things you discovered in the scriptures. Then, use this space to visualize taking off the burdens weighing on you this morning, and taking on the things of Christ you found in the scriptures. You can draw a picture, make a chart, write a poem, or even physically act out the action of taking off what weighs you down, pushing it away, and then welcoming with arms open that which comes from taking on the yoke of Jesus. A Prayer of Rest Take a moment to thank God for this time. Figuring out how to trust God with our burdens can often be a process for us. In your own words ask God to take your burdens/cares and pray that he will teach you to trust Him as you take on the yoke of Christ. Learning from and walking with Jesus is not something we can do on our own, and we don t have to! Thank God that he goes with you and helps you by his Holy Spirit. If there was a verse that stood out to you in this time, take a moment to pray that verse, asking God to make its truth take root in your heart today. If you d like, you may end your time by simply saying Jesus, I come to you...thank you for taking my burdens...thank you for giving me rest.
