Proverbs Lesson 1 Handout Proverbs 9:1 6 1 Wisdom has built her house; she has carved its seven columns. 2 She has prepared a great banquet, mixed the wines, and set the table. 3 She has sent her servants to invite everyone to come. She calls out from the heights overlooking the city. 4 Come in with me, she urges the simple. To those who lack good judgment, she says, 5 Come, eat my food, and drink the wine I have mixed. 6 Leave your simple ways behind, and begin to live; learn to use good judgment.

Psalm 14:1 1 The fool says in his heart, There is no God. John 14:6 6 Jesus answered, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 10:10 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. Proverbs 8:35 36 For whoever finds me (wisdom) finds life and receives favor from the LORD.

36 But whoever fails to find me harms himself; all who hate me love death. Psalm 90:12 12 So teach us to number our days, that we may cultivate and bring to you a heart of wisdom Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 17:17 A friend loves at all times,... Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. David Mathis desiringgod.org The proverbs commend certain paths to family members because they reflect the ways God ordinarily distributes his blessings. But ordinarily does not mean necessarily. Excellent wives have good reason to expect honor from their husbands and children. Fathers with integrity often enjoy seeing God s blessings on their children. Parents

who train their children in the fear of the Lord follow the path that frequently brings children to saving faith. But excellent wives, faithful husbands, and conscientious parents often endure terrible hardship in their homes because proverbs are not promises. They are adages that direct us toward general principles that must be applied carefully in a fallen world where life is always somewhat out of kilter. 2 Timothy 3:16 17 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Peter 1:21 21 For no prophecy ever originated because some man willed it [to do so it never came by human impulse], but men spoke from God who were borne along (moved and impelled) by the Holy Spirit. Proverbs 15:22 22 Where there is no counsel, purposes are frustrated, but with many counselors they are accomplished. Proverbs 15:2 2 The tongue of the wise utters knowledge rightly, but the mouth of the [self-confident] fool pours out folly. Proverbs 15:4 4 A gentle tongue [with its healing power] is a tree of life, but willful contrariness in it breaks down the spirit.

Proverbs 15:18 18 A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but he who is slow to anger appeases contention. 2 Chronicles 1:7 12 7 That night God appeared to Solomon and said to him, Ask for whatever you want me to give you. 8 Solomon answered God, You have shown great kindness to David my father and have made me king in his place. 9 Now, LORD God, let your promise to my father David be confirmed, for you have made me king over a people who are as numerous as the dust of the earth. 10 Give me wisdom and knowledge, that I may lead this people, for who is able to govern this great people of yours? 11 God said to Solomon, Since this is your heart s desire and you have not asked for wealth, riches or honor, nor for the death of your enemies, and since you have not asked for a long life but for wisdom and knowledge to govern my people over whom I have made you king, 12 therefore wisdom and knowledge will be given you. And I will also give you wealth, riches and honor, such as no king who was before you ever had and none after you will have. 1 Kings 4:29 34 29 God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. 30 Solomon s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the men of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. 31 He was wiser than any other man 32 He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five.

34 Men of all nations came to listen to Solomon s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom. Deuteronomy 17:15 17 15 you may indeed set a king over you whom the LORD your God will choose 16 Only he must not acquire many horses for himself or cause the people to return to Egypt in order to acquire many horses, since the LORD has said to you, You shall never return that way again. 1 Kings 4:26 26 Solomon had 40,000 stalls of horses for his chariots, and 12,000 horsemen. 17 And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold. 1 Kings 11:3 3 He had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines, and his wives turned his heart away. 1 Kings 11:2 2 They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods. Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. 17 And he shall not acquire many wives for himself, lest his heart turn away, nor shall he acquire for himself excessive silver and gold.

Ecclesiastes 2:8 8 I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces Proverbs 22:3 a prudent and farsighted person sees the evil of sin and hides himself from it, but the naïve continue on and are punished (by suffering the consequences of sin) proverbs 22:4 the reward of humility (that is, having a realistic view of one s importance) and the (reverent worshipful) fear of the Lord is riches, honor, and life James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. Ecclesiastes 2:11 11 But as I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless like chasing the wind. There was nothing really worthwhile anywhere. Ecclesiastes 12:13 13 That s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands
