Large Group Series at a Glance for Kid-O-Deo About this Series: Everyone, even the biggest and strongest person in the world, gets scared sometimes. If we re going to get scared, what can we do about it? The good news is, Jesus knows what it s like to be scared. He went through sadness, hurts, and even huge storms. With His help, every one of us can be brave. Memory Verse: Psalm 138:3- When I called out to you, you answered me. You made me strong and brave. Weekly Overview: Lesson: Topic: Big Idea: Lesson 1: August 4/5 Why we re brave Gospel story, John 18-21 I can be brave because of Jesus. : Facing my fear Jesus calms the storm, Luke 8:22-25 Jesus is in control. Series at a Glance for Kid-O-Deo (continued) Lesson 1: Why we re brave Being brave doesn t mean not being afraid. It means making the right choice, even when you feel afraid. The greatest example of this is Jesus! God wanted him to do something super scary, and Jesus chose to be brave. The great news is, because of what Jesus did, we can be brave, too! : Facing my fear Jesus disciples were feeling afraid. They were trapped in a boat, on the sea, in the middle of a huge storm. As lightning flashed and thunder rolled, they saw Jesus. He was sleeping! When they woke him up, Jesus showed them why he wasn t afraid: he was in control, even in a huge storm! We can be brave, because Jesus is still in control today. Lesson 3: Jesus love Jesus didn t act like everyone else. He went places and talked with people that others would stay away from. Even when people made fun of him, or said bad things about him, Jesus did his best to be a friend to everyone. He wanted them to know that he loved every person on earth. Knowing how much Jesus loves you is a great reason to be brave! Lesson 4: What if I fail? It s not fun to make a mistake. You might feel sad, or like you want to give up. How does Jesus feel when you make a mistake? You might be surprised. This week, we ll see how Jesus love can help us be brave enough to try again, even when we fail. Lesson 5: When I feel sad What do we do when sad things happen? When someone gets sick, or even dies? This week, we ll hear what Jesus did when one of his friends got sick, and think about how we can be brave, even when we feel sad. 3

Opening Song 3:00 (Roll when directed) Kid-O-Deo Theme Song Video (Auto advance) Kid-O-Deo Slide Introduction and Rules 2:00 Hey everyone, welcome to Kid-O-Deo! My name is! I m super excited to be here with all of you. We get to sing, hear stories, and later on, we ll go Kid-O- Whampus! First, though, there are three things we all can do to make sure everyone has fun. They re our three Kid-O-Deo rules! Let s learn them together. Rule #1: When I m talking you are listening! Everyone put on your listening ears, and on the count of three, let s practice listening! Rule #2: Keep your hands and feet to yourself! Do a little clap and place your hands in your lap! Rule #3: Stay in your spot! Let s take our special glue sticks and put some glue on our spot to help us stay in the right place! Great job, Kid-Os! There s one more super important thing I want you to know. Value 1:00 God made you so wonderful. He has made you to do good things that no one else can do. When we follow God and trust him, we can really be all that he made us to be. Can you repeat this after me? I can be, I CAN BE, who God made me to be. WHO GOD MADE ME TO BE. Worship 3:00 5

I love following God, because there s so much to learn, and so many ways to grow. Our God really is the best! He s so great, I want to get up and sing about it. Let s do that right now! Song 1: My God is Number One (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Bible Adventure 5:00 I love singing with you! You can sit down, but get ready for an adventure! Everyone feels afraid sometimes. Even the biggest and strongest people in the world can feel afraid. Maybe you re scared of mice, or of getting lost. To help us find out how to face our fears, Rocky is going on an adventure. Let s see where he is today! Rocky Ocean Video #1 The video will freeze on the final frame, with a Bible Adventure sign on screen. Rocky is exploring in the ocean! There are amazing things in there, but it can also be a scary place. The sign he found says it s time for us to go on an adventure, too! It s time for a Bible Adventure! Bible Adventure Jingle Do This: Show kids the Bible. Kid-Os, I have a super important question for you. Are the stories in the Bible real or pretend? REAL! That s right, these stories actually happened. Today, we get to hear a story about someone who was very, very brave: God s son, Jesus! Do This: Get the Bible storybook out and sit down in the chair. This story you are going to hear comes from the Bible, but we use this storybook because the pictures help us imagine what it might have looked like back when the 6

Bible was written. The pictures you see in here are the same as the ones on the screen. Let s get started! Do This: Have kids help you turn the pages on the screen with an exaggerated arm wave. Picture 1: Jesus and his disciples sailing It had been a long day for Jesus and his friends, the disciples. Jesus had taught and helped a lot of people, and they were tired. Jesus was so tired that as they were sailing to another town, he fell asleep! Picture 2: The boat caught in a storm While Jesus was sleeping, a huge storm started! There was thunder, lightning, and huge waves! All the disciples were scared, but Jesus was still sleeping! Picture 3: Disciples waking Jesus up Jesus friends woke him up, yelling that their boat was going to be destroyed! When he woke up, Jesus asked them Why are you so afraid? The disciples were probably confused, wasn t Jesus scared of the huge storm? Then, Jesus stood up and said Quiet! Be still. Picture 4: Jesus calms the storm Right away, the wind and waves completely stopped. Even the storm did what Jesus told it to. The disciples didn t need to be afraid, because no matter what happened, Jesus was in control. Series Title Slide: Great job listening, Kid-Os. Jesus friends learned that while Jesus was with them, there was nothing to be afraid of. Jesus is with all of us today, too, and he is always in control, no matter what happens. That s a great reason to be brave. Let s adventure a little further into the ocean with Rocky, and see what s next! Can you swim with him? 7

Rocky Ocean Video #2 The video will freeze on the final frame, with a Memory Verse sign on screen. It s time for our memory verse! Memory Verse 3:00 Memory Verse Jingle (Auto advance Memory Verse) Psalm 138:3- When I called out to you, you answered me. You made me strong and brave. Do This: Read the verse from the screen. This verse is all about one way God can help us when we are scared. God may not take away the thing we re afraid of, but he can help us be brave when we trust him. Let s practice saying that verse together! Do This: Practice the verse with the Kid-Os 2-3 times. Begin with your quiet voices, then do it in your normal voices, and finish with your super-duper loud voices! Know This: The verse with actions goes like this: Psalm 138:3- When I called out to you (hands cupped around mouth), you answered me (hands cupped around ears). You made me strong (flex arms) and brave (arm/fist across chest). Great job practicing your Memory Verse, Kid-Os! Worship 3:00 Jesus showed us so many reasons to be brave, he is really wonderful. This song is all about how great Jesus is! Let s sing it together. Song 2: Better than the Best Thing 8

(Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Application 5:00 Do This: Make sure the Mystery Box is on stage before the Application begins. You could bring it out now, or leave it on stage the whole time if you think it will get kids interested in what s inside without distracting them. I love singing and praising God with you. You can sit back down! Now it s time for the mystery box! Inside is something interesting, something unexpected, something mysterious! Let s find out what it is. Do This: Take a plush monster out of the box. Aah! It s a monster! Are you Kid-Os afraid of this monster? NO! Probably not. This monster isn t scary, because it s a toy! It s soft and cuddly. I could play with it, or I could carry it around. That reminds me of Jesus story! He wasn t scared of the storm, because he was always in control. He even controls the weather, the wind, and waves! Jesus is in charge of this whole world. The best part is, he absolutely loves you! He cares about everything that happens to you. If you feel sad, Jesus cares. If you feel happy, Jesus is happy with you! If you feel scared, Jesus cares. That s why the best thing we can do when we feel afraid is to talk to Jesus, and choose to trust him. What does that mean? Well, talking to Jesus is easy, because wherever you are, he will always listen to you. Your voice is so important to Jesus, Kid-Os. Then, we have to trust Jesus. That can be harder. Jesus doesn t always take away the thing we re afraid of. We might feel better after talking to him, but we might still feel scared. What can we do then? Well, when we trust that Jesus is in control, we can decide to be brave. One day, the things we were afraid of might not seem so scary! That s how Jesus can help us be strong and brave. I m so glad Jesus can help us be brave. I think Rocky is being brave right now, too! Let s see where he is on his adventure! 9

Rocky Ocean Video #3 The video will freeze on the final frame, with a Big Idea sign on screen. That must mean it s time to learn the Big Idea! Big Idea 2:00 Big Idea Jingle Get on your feet, and get ready to learn with Ranger Ron! Know This: The Big Idea is, Jesus is in control. Big Idea Video (Auto advance) Series Title Slide: Thanks Ranger Ron! We can always be brave, because Jesus is always in control. You know, it looked like Rocky s journey was almost done, but there was a little further to go! Let s find out what s next on Rocky s adventure. Rocky Ocean Video #4 The video will freeze on the final frame, with a Kid-O-Whampus sign on screen. Kid-O-Whampus 2:00 Rocky made it through the ocean! Let s celebrate with him by going Kid-O- Whampus! 10

Kid-O-Whampus: Running with Rocky (Auto-Advance) Take Homes. Prayer 2:00 That was a lot of fun! You can all sit down. Do This: Show kids the family connection card and the memory verse card. There are two things you should get as you leave today. The first one is our family connection card! This helps your grown-ups learn what we were talking about today. You can help them learn too, by telling them about Jesus story! The second thing is our memory verse card. This card helps you remember and practice the memory verse at home, so when you come back next week, you ll have it ready! Let s Pray God loves it when we talk to him. We call talking to God prayer. You can pray when you feel happy, when you feel sad, and any other time, too! God will always listen when you pray because He loves you. Here in Kid-O-Deo we fold our hands in our laps and close our eyes, to help us only think about the words we are saying to God. If you want, you can repeat the words of this prayer after me. Dear God, we love you. Thank you for loving us. Help us to trust Jesus every day. Amen. Kid-O-Deo Slide I have loved spending time with you, Kid-Os. Now it s time for you to go back to your classrooms where you will get into groups with your leader and other Kid-Os, have a snack, and do a fun activity. See you later! 11
