KATERI TEKAKWITHA On July 14th, we celebrate the feast of the "Lily of the Mohawks." St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American woman to be canonized. Orphaned by a smallpox outbreak, Kateri survived with severe scarring and impaired eyesight. Despite tragedy, she was a devout girl at a young age, often building crosses from sticks in the woods. When she was 18, she began secret instruction in the Catholic faith with French missionaries. Her commitment to Christianity and vow of virginity was misunderstood and ridiculed by her fellow villagers. She escaped to a nearby mission, where she attended daily Mass, taught the children, and cared for the sick and the elderly. Sometimes the greatest misunderstandings can come from those closest to us. Like St. Kateri, God invites us to be faithful to our commitments of faith and to always respond in love. It also symbolically expresses the assembly s participation in the Eucharistic celebration. When you celebrate an Anniversary, Birthday or commemorating a loved one with a Mass remembrance, why not plan to bring up the gift at the Liturgy. Plan ahead and sign up in the book available on the table in the vestibule. Altar Servers Anyone who has received First Communion is welcome to become an Altar Server. Please talk with Deacon Gary.
J u l y 8, 2 0 1 8 ~ F o u r t e e n t h S u n d a y i n O r d i n a r y T i m e Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill 2018 Mission Cooperation Appeal July 21-22, 2018 It is wonderful to be able to sponsor the Diocesan Mission Cooperation Appeal in our parish again this year. On July 21-22, 2018 we will be honored to have Sister Colette Hanlon, SC with us to share the good news of the mission works of the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill in China, Korea and Ecuador. The Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill first missioned four sisters from Pennsylvania to Korea in 1960. At that time it took a month for the sisters to travel by freighter ship to Korea, now it takes only hours by airplane! As our world grows smaller, our hearts grow larger and we reach out to others. We are pleased to have this opportunity to learn about the missions and to help with our prayers and donations. As the sisters continue to bring the love of the Lord to the people they serve, they need our help they cannot do it alone! Wherever we may live we are all missionaries and can help in different ways! Please give from the heart on July 21-22 to help spread the Gospel throughout the world and assist the Sisters of Charity of Seton Hill to share God s love with those in need. Your prayers and donations will bring blessings of hope and healing! God Bless You for Your Generosity! Please note that we will be having a second collection this weekend. On behalf of Bishop Edward B. Scharfenberger and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Albany, we cordially invite you to register for the inaugural Hearts Aflame: Eucharistic Congress, to be held September 22, 2018 at the Shrine of the North American Martyrs in Auriesville. We encourage you to invite others in your parish to this historic day of faith, worship, adoration, and fellowship in the Blessed Sacrament. Please register today, and feel free to contact us at any time.
