ST. MARY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Dear Parishioners: First, I want to thank those staff members who have shared their thoughts and reflections in this column in my absence. I am sure that the fresh perspectives have been welcome. Second, I repeat what I said at some of the Masses last weekend: it is lovely to be able to travel, and it is wonderful to come home! My journey took me to several countries chief among them, Germany. Historically, it is the birthplace of the Protestant Reformation Martin Luther was born in Eisleben. Given that 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of this schism, it seemed very timely to have the occasion to visit many Catholic as well as Lutheran churches and to grieve that divisions between Christians persist even to now. Five hundred years on, we continue to live with the effects of separation. Yet, I believe we can legitimately reflect with hope on the bridges of understanding and healing that, while far from complete, at least have brought us into dialogue and allow for substantive cooperation including within our own city. On Sunday, October 29, at 2 o clock in the afternoon, Saint Mary will host a service of Common Prayer in Commemoration of the 500th Year of the Reformation. Some may understandably ask, Why are we doing this? Are we celebrating division? Clearly, once again, we cannot rejoice over separation. Nevertheless, such gatherings are happening across the nation (A major joint prayer service took place in Chicago on March 2 cosponsored by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Conference of Bishops' Ecumenical and Inter-Religious Committee and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs Committee.) and internationally (A joint ecumenical commemoration was held in Lund, Sweden, on Oct. 31, 2016, cohosted by The Lutheran World Federation and the Roman Catholic Church). Here is a brief citation from Unitatis Redintegratio (the Decree on Ecumenism from the Second Vatican Council) that I hope will help frame the spirit of this gathering: Catholics must gladly acknowledge and esteem the truly Christian endowments from our common heritage which are to be found among our separated brethren. It is right and salutary to recognize the riches of Christ and virtuous works in the lives of others who are bearing witness to Christ, sometimes even to the shedding of their blood. For God is always wonderful in His works and worthy of all praise. Old Business: * Prior Meeting Minutes Review and Approval Minutes from the prior meeting were read and approved with the correction that the ice cream toppings were donated by T=the Miyashita family. * Council reviewed the Parish Picnic. Overall the picnic was a success, the chicken provided by the Knights of Columbus was delicious as well as the lemonade prepared by Mark Gish. Efforts to recycle and compost were more successful than last year and Council acknowledged Laine Frantz s great help in that effort. There was extra chicken which was donated to the Pathway House. Council also discussed changing the table layout for next year to help with the flow of serving food. * Council also discussed ways to recognize volunteers at the Parish and many helpful ideas and suggestions were made. 3. New Business * Regarding Adult Faith Formation activities Father Steve reported that the Disciple Maker Faire hosted by AFF in the gym along with PSR Kick-off was very well received. Councils also advised that AFF is still looking for and open to suggestions for a Lenten Parish Mission. * Father Steve updated Council on ways the Parish is looking to honor the Fatima Centennial with various events planned for October 13th and 14th. Students at the school will partake in a special service on October 13th which will be open to all. Bernie Rieman will also be leading a recitation of the Rosary at the Fatima Shrine on October 14th at noon. There was also a discussion of publicly reciting the Rosary for 12 hours on October 13th. * Father Steve told Council of plans for the Parish to host an interfaith service marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation on October 29th at noon. A thoughtful discussion then took place about how we as Catholics should address this issue with our Protestant brothers and sisters and there were concerns about holding the service at St Mary s. This is understandably a very sensitive and painful topic for many but it is hoped that through this service we can share the beauty of our Catholic faith. We continue to pray for unity in the Body of Christ. * Father Steve presented a ten year overview of parish giving as well as an update on the Grateful Giving initiative. * Kaalyn Tate passed out information regarding the Courage Apostolate which is a program geared towards helping those who have same sex attraction live as faithful Catholics and grow in their relationship with Christ. Council was asked to consider having a speaker from Courage present at St Mary s. 4. Closing Prayer Jesse Feldpausch. Upcoming Meeting Dates: Pastoral Council Meeting: TBD at Bob Evan s on Madison Hill Pastoral Council Meeting: October 16th at 7 P.M. in the Parish Hall Respectfully Submitted, Kaalyn Tate 4
