This must be not only our collective question, but a question for each one of us. Lord, I want what you want; let me know what you want and I will get right to it. Two weeks ago, the Fraternity of Priests that I belong to, began to ask the same question, and I was so proud of them! They realized that what was once a powerful tool of healing and evangelization, was not longer having the same impact. We have now spent several weeks, just asking God what He wants us to do differently. How can we lead your people well, Lord. What are you asking of us. It is really beautiful because instead of just making up random things, we are really praying and waiting to hear from the Lord, and I must say that He is speaking and we are slowly but surely finding our way. I invite you and any group to which you might belong to ask the Lord for clear direction in this time of renewal as we journey on Mission for the Church Alive! Love and blessings! In Christ, Fr. Levi Hartle HOLYAPOSTLES DAY OF REFLECTION The Holy Apostles Christian Mothers and Women s Guild is hosting its Annual Lenten Day of Reflection on Saturday, March 10, from 9 AM to 5 PM at the Passionist Convent (Mass is at 4 PM). By Deacon Tim BOOK & MOVIE REVIEWS Giants is a 2008 football movie about Christian Faith, good works and overcoming adversity. Our Youth Group has watched this movie and they enjoyed it very much. The parents of one of our Youth Group members asked to borrow the movie and they enjoyed it as well. That says more about this film than any thing that I can say in my review. This movie is about a high school football coach that in six years has never had a winning season. Because of this, mounting pressure from frustrated parents, and several challenges in his personal life have given him every reason to give up. However, an unexpected visitor challenges him with a quote from The Bible to trust in God and by doing so, he discovers the strength to persevere and succeed - in all aspects of his life. I rate this film Four Beards out of Five Beards, because the movie moves a little slow in the beginning, but Amazon has it rated as Five Stars out of Five Stars. Watch this movie and you will see a wonderful and believable story about how applying the words of Scripture can positively impact your personal and professional life. Just like our Youth Group, you will thank me for letting you know about this movie. 2018 PRE-CANA Understanding all the planning that goes into a wedding, advanced planning for the 2018 Spring Pre-Cana Program at Holy Apostles Parish has begun. It will be held at the Parish Office Building at St. Albert the Great. It will begin on Friday, March 16 with registration at 6:30 PM at Holy Apostles Parish Office Building at St. Albert the Great (3198 Schieck St., Pittsburgh, PA 15227 and end on Saturday, March 17 at 3:30 PM. Refreshments, program materials, and lunch on Saturday are all included. There is a donation of $60 per couple for this essential training. There will be another offering on September 14 & 15. So get us on your calendar now. More details will be forthcoming in January. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our parish office at 412-884-7744 and ask for Deacon Mike or Deacon Jim. May the Lord Continue to bless you both! If neither of these dates meet your needs, please check the diopitt.org website, for other offerings throughout the diocese. Live Jesus in our hearts... Come and See the Promise of the Father Appreciation Sometimes we find ourselves longing for things a bigger house, a fancy new car, more money, an exotic vacation. But do we ever stop and think about what we already have? Having worked in downtown Pittsburgh for nearly 30 years, I saw many unfortunate people. There was the man who sat on a blanket on a Wood Street sidewalk begging for money. The man who wore multiple coats even in the hot summer months, most likely all the clothes he owned. The woman who pushed around a small shopping cart that probably contained all of her worldly belongings. The makeshift beds under the bridges where homeless people spent the night in all kinds of weather. Seeing things like that makes you grateful for your warm home, no matter how modest it is. This made me think about the Ladies of Charity matmaking project. In case you weren t aware, the project includes collecting plastic bags that are cut into strips and crocheted to make mats for the homeless. These mats go on the ground below their bedding to help it stay dry in inclement weather. The Ladies of Charity recently donated 40 completed mats with more being made. Your car might not be flashy, but as long as it runs and is safe, that s really all that matters. A Ferrari doesn t get us to Giant Eagle any better than a fifteen year old Chevy. Appreciate that you have transportation. Many people don t. We might wish we could afford expensive clothing, but a designer sweater won t keep you any warmer than one from Target. Be happy that you have a warm sweater. Many don t. We can complain about our job or be thankful that we have a job that provides a roof over our head and food on the table. Some people get bored with their spouse and seek out what they think is a newer and better model. Sad that we seem to live in a throw-away society. If it doesn t please us or if we tire of it, we dump it and look elsewhere. If you are blessed to have a spouse, treasure them. Accept their imperfections they probably accept yours. Sadly, sometimes we only value what we had after we ve lost it. God has given us life. Cherish it all even the rainy days. They help us to appreciate the sunshine. HOLY APOSTLES PARISH Saint Albert the Great Church Saturday February 10, 2018 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM The Festival of Praise team, lead by our Father Levi Hartle, is putting together another moving service for February. Father Tom Galvin will preside and Mary Ann Coda will share witness to the never ending love of Jesus. Comments from throughout the diocese give testimony to the uplifting spirit of love for Jesus and each other that one experiences during and after leaving this service. The Praise Band Repertoire includes more than thirty beautiful songs and continues to grow monthly. You can view and listen to You Tube videos (by recording artist) of these songs. Links to the videos are posted on the Festival of Praise page found on the parish website (www.holyapostlesparish.org/festivalofpraise ). This is truly a motivational evening with an inspirational homily, witness talk, songs of praise and worship, adoration of the blessed Sacrament and ending with Eucharistic procession and Benediction. Website:www.holyapostlesparish.org Email:praise@holyapostlesparish.org Questions: call 412-884-7744 FORTY DAYS FOR LIFE Forty Days for Life is the largest internationally coordinated pro-life mobilization in history. It is helping people in local communities end the injustice of abortions through prayer and fasting, community outreach and a focused 40 day prayer vigil. Our vigil is outside Planned Parenthood on Liberty Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh from February 14 through March 25. Any amount of time or effort will make a difference. Our parish will also have a special vigil on March 12 from 11am to 3pm. Forty Days for Life has achieved a stunning track record of life-saving results. THE DEACON S CORNER Deacon s Corner We have renewed our Nar-Anon meetings and they are every Monday. We hope to continue to grow our family and provide support for those who are dealing daily with the insanity of addiction; those who are friends or family members of an addict. As we have stated, these meetings are to provide input to those who are suffering and wish to learn through the experiences live by others. Remember we maintain anonymity. Speak if you want or just listen, but please come. Nar-Anon website: http://www.nar-anon.org Every Monday, 6:30 pm In the St. Albert Chapel area 3198 Schieck St., Baldwin, PA SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM Mandatory Reporters Training live sessions will be offered at Holy Apostles Parish, St. Albert Church Location in the office building. Tuesday, February 27 from 6-9 PM and Saturday, April 21, from 10 AM 1PM. All adult volunteer & employees (18 and over) are required to attend Mandatory Reporters Training, If you have completed it you do not have to repeat it. You can register by going online at diopitt.org or you can call Holy Apostles Parish Office. You can also email at the safe environment address on the front of Bulletin. I was reviewing some old note cards that I use to collect passing thoughts or things that are meaningful to me. I am not sure where the one I am going to share came from, probably from a retreat. But the thought is that as we are sitting in Mass and we observe the wine and bread on the gift table, or we pray in preparation for the Eucharist, we note that the wine and bread are but simple elements. As Mass proceeds, these simple elements are placed on the altar. There they sit and wait to be transformed into the body and blood of our Lord and Savior by the Holy Spirit. In that same spirit, we too, sit in front of the altar of God, waiting. We also are waiting to be transformed; to die to self, to live for others, and love like God by partaking of the body and blood of our Lord. Each time we consume the most holy Eucharist, our hearts and minds are transformed, and our faith and love of God increased. Jesus has done all the work. We only need accept God s offer of unity with Christ and cooperate with God s grace, in faith, to complete the transformation He is offering.
