MAY 28, 2017 ST. COLUMBANUS CHURCH #481/PAGE 4 We have reached 67% of our goal ($85,500) for this year s Cardinal s Appeal. This amount has come from just 11% of our parish families. I thank them for their generosity. I hope ALL families will chip in to help us reach our goal. As someone who has received a temporary reprieve from a life threatening disease, I know how foolish it is to hold onto material things. When we die God will not ask us about how much we had in our bank account, but rather what did we do with the gifts He has given us. St. Teresa of Calcutta (Mother Teresa) said, There is no one on earth who ruined himself because he had given away what he had to the poor. I pray we reach our goal soon with every family participating. Our parish has stepped up in support of our school by contributing to the Four Saints Golf Cup. Check out the website (foursaintscup.com) if you wish to play, attend dinner or take out a sponsorship. We will receive one quarter of the proceeds. I hope to be there for a little while since I am one of the honorees. Pope Francis saying Mass ad orientem in the Sistine Chapel. As I mentioned last week, I hope to be back in action sometime in June. I will take some precautions to save my energy as I offer Mass. One of the ways I will do this is by celebrating Mass facing the crucifix and tabernacle so I won t have to circle the altar. I ll have a straight line from the chair to the altar to the pulpit. This was how Mass was said for a millennium and a half. The Roman Missal s instructions actually assume a priest is facing east figuratively by facing the Cross and tabernacle. Cardinal Robert Sarah, who is in charge of the Congregation for Divine Worship has spoken on the subject: I believe that it is very important that we return as soon as possible to a common orientation, of priests and the faithful turned together in the same direction Eastwards or at least towards the apse to the Lord who comes, in those parts of the liturgical rites when we are addressing God, the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship said July 5 during his opening address at the conference being held in London. Cardinal Sarah also has written: It is entirely consistent with the conciliar constitution, it is indeed opportune that, during the rite of penance, the singing of the Gloria, the orations, and the Eucharistic prayer, everyone, priest and faithful, should turn together towards the East, to express their will to participate in the work of worship and of redemption accomplished by Christ, he continued. This manner of doing things could opportunely be put into place in cathedrals, where liturgical life must be exemplary. Bishop Robert Morlino of Madison, Wisconsin and Bishop James Conley of Lincoln, Nebraska have begun this practice in their Dioceses. Incidentally, both dioceses have many vocations to the priesthood.
