C Harris Family, Photographs, c. 1880s-1960s 2415 1 cubic foot This collection is available at The State Historical Society of Missouri. If you would like more information, please contact us at shsresearch@umsystem.edu. INTRODUCTION Photographs of family, friends, employers, church, and schools collected by Julia Warren Harris. Two folders contain postcards, a few letters, and announcements. The collection is a vivid portrait of black family and social life in Boone County, MO. DONOR INFORMATION The papers were donated to the University of Missouri by Frances Jones-Sneed on 3 March 1986 (Accession No. 4700). SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE These photographs belonged to Julia Warren Harris and her sister Cassie Warren Gilmore. They were presented to the sisters by family, friends, and employers. The Warren family and descendants lived in the Three Creeks area of Boone County, Ashland, and Columbia, Missouri. The collection documents black family life, social and church events, and education for several generations. Of special interest are the economic and social conditions depicted. Clothing styles, automobiles, and houses and their locations indicate prevailing trends and racial attitudes. The principal weaknesses are the lack of dates and the number of unidentified photographs. Folders 1-31 are arranged alphabetically by family name. Photographs of individuals and groups, arranged in alphabetical order by family name. In group shots the filing decision was arbitrary. Photographs cover all stages of life from infancy to the grave. Very few are dated. In addition to formal poses, there are snapshots of work and recreational activities. The remaining photographs are arranged by category or subject. Folders 59 and 60 contain a few letters, announcements, and postcards; these contain little substantive information.
