THE GARDNER FAMILY The Gardner family comes from Lymington in Hampshire (Southampton) England. This was a seacoast town facing south towards the Isle of Wight. The family was seafarering by trade. Thomas Gardner came to Massachusetts in 1624 bringing with him his son, Thomas, Jr. They settled in Salem, Massachusetts in 1626 All I know about Thomas Gardner Senior is that he headed up a group called The Dorchester Company that came aboard the ship Charity and landed in Salem. He died in Salem in 1635. I will begin this history with his son, Thomas Junior. THOMAS GARDNER Thomas Gardner was born in Lymington, Hampshire County, England in 1592. He married Margaret Frier in Hampshire County in about 1615. He had two sons born in England and accompanied his father to America in 1624. He arrived on Cape Ann aboard the ship Charity. He came as head of the Dorchester Company from England. He settled in Salem, Massachusetts in 1626 and was to remain there all his life. He was a representative to the General Court in 1637. Margaret died in Salem in 1659 and Thomas died there on December 29, 1674. They had two sons, John and Richard, and may have had other children, but I have no information on them. Richard Gardner Richard was born in about 1620 in Lymington England. This is our line and his history is covered in the next section. John Gardner John Gardner was born in about 1622 in England. John was a sea captain sailing out of Salem. He married Priscilla Grafton, a daughter of Joseph Grafton, in Salem in about 1652. Their first son was born in February 1653/4. Along with his brother, he received a grant of land on Nantucket in 1666, but did not go there until about 1673. He then remained on the Island all his life, sailing his ships from their port. He died in Nantucket at age 82 in 1706, leaving his wife who survived him. John and Priscilla had the following twelve children. The first ten were born in Salem, the remaining two on Nantucket Island. JOHN GARDNER born February 20, 1654.

ANN GARDNER born February 20, 1667. She married Edward Coffin, son of Peter and Abigail Coffin. NATHANIEL GARDNER born September 24, 1668. MARY GARDNER born May 27, 1670. She married James Coffin, son of James and Mary Coffin, on May 19, 1692. RICHARD GARDNER Richard Gardner was born in Lymington in about 1623. He married Sarah Shattuck in Salem, Massachusetts in 1650. Sarah was a daughter of Samuel and Damaris Shattuck. She was born in England in about 1632. Richard was granted a half share of land on Nantucket on March 22, 1666/67 in order to `exercise his trade as seaman.' His eldest son, Joseph, was likewise granted a half share on February 15, 1666/67. Joseph was also given housing as long as he `supply the occasions of the Island in way of a shoemaker and not leave the Island for four years.' They moved almost at once as Richard purchased some land from John Bishop on Wesco Pond in 1667. In addition to being a sailor, Richard was elected Chief Magistrate in 1673. His son Joseph was a selectman, assessor and constable at various times as well. Richard Gardner died on Nantucket on January 23, 1688. Sarah died there in 1724. They had ten children. He married Mary Austin on May 17, 1674. Mary was a daughter of Joseph Austin and Sarah Starbuck Story (Sarah's second of three marriages).
