L i t e r a t u r e A n d T e a c h i n g M i n i s t r i e s W RLD NEWS LATM Fall 2016 Volume 25 No. 2 Exciting Changes Providing culturally relevant, Christ-centered books in the heart languages of people throughout the world.

Quite a Year Phil Casey Executive Director 2016 has been quite a year for LATM. Three huge highlights come immediately to mind: We reached the 2 Million Book milestone! As we assist our field partners with their book publishing projects, we keep track of how many books they print. It took us 15 years for the tally to reach our first million. We ve reached the second million mark in just nine more years. These two million are in 70 languages spoken on five continents. The printed page is effectively communicating our Lord s message in culturally relevant ways throughout the world. We met our 2016 goal and broke another record in the number of projects completed in one year! In 2015, LATM saw a record high of 75 book publishing projects come to completion. Our goal for 2016 was 85. That goal was met on November 15. As this issue of World News goes to press, we have already crossed the 90 mark. Those 90 projects were requested by 22 different field partners in 28 languages and represent over 178,000 books printed. You can read details about most of these projects on the pages of this newsletter. College Press is now a wholly owned subsidiary of LATM! On June 14th of this year, Chris and Carol DeWelt signed the legal documents bequeathing the ownership of College LATM is a non-profit organization created to help provide culturally relevant, Christ-centered books in the heart languages of people throughout the world. I remember when LATM was a fledgling ministry barely able to make ends meet, and highly dependent on College Press for office space, phone system, technical expertise, and much more. Through the years, the partnership between the two entities has grown. Over two decades ago, when Chris first mentioned to me his desire one day to see LATM be the owner of College Press, it was like a distant dream that I was incapable of imagining. Pinch me, I think that day has arrived. Momentum. Many years of faithful obedience in the same direction, consistently doing our best to meet the publishing needs of our field partners, de- World News Design: Brett Lyerla on the cover Counter-clockwise from top right, Chris DeWelt, Gregg Murdock, Carol DeWelt, and Phil Casey signing documents to transfer ownership of College Press to LATM veloping ever deeper and wider partnerships with churches and individuals who see the importance of this ministry, have produced a momentum that I trust is God-honoring and worthy of your ongoing support. Please rejoice with us as you read through these pages and ask the Lord to bless this momentum into 2017 and on to three million books! When we first imagined completing two million books, we put it in perspective this way: Maybe two million riders is a light day on the New York City Subway, but otherwise, two million is a lot of anything. You spent two million minutes getting through high school. You would have to go up 60 floors to see over the top of a stack of two million one-dollar bills. A two-million-car traffic jam in Boston would back up four lanes all the way to Dallas. And now the imagined has become real, and we are beyond two million books. It is still a lot of books doing a LOT of Kingdom work in five continents. Our thanks to the Lord for the hundreds of LATM stateside supporters whose contributions helped make it so! ReedMe.txt "What will you be telling us now?" Doug Reed Director of Development A college student stopped in front of LATM's booth at the International Conference on Missions last month. She looked at the banner on the back table: "TwoMillionbooks" with "COMPLETED!" stamped over it. Then she looked at me. "What will you be telling us now?" she asked. I had no answer for her. I still do not. We started the 2Mb campaign in 2015. It seemed like we were a whole lot of books away from two million, and we estimated it would take three years. Or more. It took two. Believe me, we are excited. Helping put two million books to work around the world means that we have influenced and will continue to influence far more than two million people with biblical, Christ-centered teaching. Our immediate purpose is to help missionaries and national ministers get the strategic books that will multiply their ministries, but the long view is for Christ to change lives. Books help ministries preach Christ where his name has not been heard, where hope is absent. They help Christians grow in love, hope and faith, and in service to and through Christ's church in communities worldwide. So, what could be better than TwoMillionbooks? Actual question. What could be better than helping put two million Christ-centered books to work around the world? We do not know what to tell people. Let's help with three million? Too far off to keep us excited, I suspect. Another 100K? Probably in less than a year. And the requests for book projects just keep pouring in! Text or email me with an idea. Please. 417-499-6318 doug@latm.info

Anung (See Life of Christ Visualized, below) Arabic Safaa Fahmi of Christian Arabic Services (CAS), with his literature team, has been working diligently on the Arabic Language Bible Commentary project. Commentaries on 24 of the 66 Bible books are completed. LATM funding has helped with many of these, including these seven which have recently come off the press: Exodus, Hosea, Minor Prophets-Vol. 1, Minor Prophets-Vol. 2, Romans- Vol. 1, 1 Timothy, and Epistles of John. In addition, LATM is pleased to have provided funding for 14 recently produced topical booklets: Baptism and the Lord s Supper The Lord s Day Mormonism The Gospel of Barnabas is Fake Satanic Worship Homosexuality (Scientific) Sexual Addiction Atheism, Vol. 1 Atheism, Vol. 2 Jesus Christ the Only Mediator Jesus Christ, Whom You Need to Know The Holy Spirit 1: The Person of the Holy Spirit and the Trinity The Holy Spirit 2: The Power and Gifts The Holy Spirit 3: The Fruit Belarusian Leonid Mikhovich, president of Minsk Theological Seminary, and Belarusian field director for TCMI, along with scholars from regarded schools and research establishments in Belarus and Poland, have published their second collection of conference papers: Evangelical Churches in Belarus: History and Modernity, Volume 2. Most Belarusians are affiliated with the Orthodox or the Catholic church. That majority often ostracizes the 5% Protestant believers. Leonid hopes these scholarly studies will help turn this around. Bosnian Nabeel Qureshi s Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus: A Devout Muslim Encounters Christianity recently made the NY Times Best Sellers list. It is now off the press in Bosnian! With funding from LATM, Rabic Publishing printed 500 copies in Sarajevo, and it is now in bookstores around Bosnia. The publisher even put two full-page ads in a national newspaper. It is selling so well that a second printing is now planned. Qureshi s second book, Answering Jihad has been translated into Bosnian and will be published soon. Burmese 2,000 copies of Burmese Hymns of Praise, 4th Edition (Harmony Series, hardbound) came off the press in Chiang Mai in May. Simon Thaung and David Morse requested Burmese Hymnbook, in paperback, to distribute among refugees and victims of flooding earlier this year. IDES helped with approximately half the cost on this one, and LATM supporters gave the rest. In an October 21 email, David said: The goal was (a) to provide a low-cost hymnbook for every-day use prayer services in homes and family devotions, midweek services as well as in teaching new Christians, evangelism and church planting, and (b) to raise the bar of reading and singing skills among new (and old) believers in Myanmar. Since Burmese is the national language of Myanmar, this book can be used among all ethnic/language groups in the country as well as across denominational divides. 10,000 copies of this small hymnbook (160 hymns plus 108 responsive readings) in Burmese were printed.

The book was typed and compiled by the Christian Literature Fellowship (CLF) office in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Distribution is through a joint effort with Simon Thaung (of Myanmar, living in Yangon), who has already gotten 8,000 books into Myanmar. These books are going like " hot cakes" and there have already been requests for more. The degree of zeal and enthusiasm of the people when the books were introduced was a surprise. This book has turned out to be a much bigger thing for them than was anticipated. Those involved in publishing and distributing this book feel it has been very well worth the time and effort. People remember words better when associated with a tune. Most of the hymns selected for inclusion in this book have words that teach and preach the Word. We are already seeing a renewed interest in learning about the Bible. One young man took the hymnbook back to his Buddhist parents who were not happy about this at first. But after a short time listening to their son singing the words, agreed to go the worship meeting to hear more. They have since made a decision for Christ. I know there are more incidents like this, and of those nominal believers, who, for the first time in their life have had a hymnbook, and who have become excited about learning more. Music seems to break down barriers. James Khong reported that 500 copies of Bob Kuest s Uncommon Beginnings: A Leadership Strategy for Starting in a New Ministry were printed in Yangon in October. Chinese A traditional script version of an evangelistic booklet, Christ in China, by Wing Wong was printed in May. Before they were printed, Wing wrote: We printed the simplified version of this booklet last year with LATM funding. All 2000 copies are almost gone. I have made a few corrections on the type setting mistakes and going to print 2000 copies in traditional Chinese characters for people in Hong Kong and Taiwan. It proved to be a thought provoking book especially for the intellectuals in China because it showed evidence to prove Chinese had been worshiping the Creator as described in the Bible ever since we have Chinese written history. It also uses scientific evidence and quotes from scientists to disprove evolution and big bang theories which are part of the popular worldview in China. We have many Gospel tracts and booklets in Chinese but very few would take the same approach as I do in this booklet. We also use attractive illustrations and quality printing to earn our way into the intellectual people's home. After they were printed, he wrote that these are being used for Chinese evangelism in Hong Kong, Taiwan and the USA. Wing says, Thank you again for backing us up financially and prayerfully! English LATM recently helped print 500 copies of Shawn Tyler s devotional Mbale, Uganda, these books will accompany the Proverbs video series they are producing. book, Proverbs: Ancient Wisdom for Today s World. Produced by Good News Productions International LATM helped with printing costs for 2,000 copies of the booklet Christians and Muslims Talking Together, printed and distributed in Kenya. The printing was poorly done, but even so, the books were well received, and a second printing (done well) is in the works. French French is the official language of 12 countries in Central and West Africa and one of the official languages of 10 or so more. The IberoAmerican Ministries (IAM) team working in Sierra Leone requested LATM assistance to publish Uncommon Leadership, Bob Kuest s teaching on Biblical leadership and make it available to all of Francophone Africa. In describing the need for this book, IAM team member Julius Metuge wrote: There is a great need for the translation of this book into French so the Christians and church leaders will benefit... Operating alongside the leadership training ministry of Dr. Robert D. Kuest, we teach, train and equip church leaders to be effective in the ministry to which they are

called. As for now we are limited in reaching the French countries with seminars and conferences on Uncommon Leadership because we have the book in English but need it in French. We pray the needs of the translation of this book will be impressed on the hearts of the people so by God s grace we will reach the masses in the French speaking countries hungry for the manifestation of true leadership God s way. We are pleased to report that 750 Copies of Uncommon Leadership in French packed and ready to distribute copies of the French edition of this book were printed in June and Julius s prayer has been answered! Hindi Dr. Indu Lall loves children. For many years, she has passionately d i r e c t e d the child r e n s o ut r e a c h of Central India Christian Mission, developing it into a phenomenal ministry to give food, clothing, education, and dignity to thousands of children in India. In addition to that, she has written books and teaching materials that are in high demand by Hindi speaking church leaders. Recently she has overseen the production of a curriculum series covering age groups from preschool through college age. LATM has been privileged to come alongside CICM to provide some of the financial resources needed to print these materials in large quantities. Since our last issue of World News, LATM has assisted with the following by Dr. Indu Lall: Parables of Jesus (reprint) Sunday School Curriculum (Age Group 3) Sunday School Curriculum (College) Indonesian (See Life of Christ Visualized, below) Khmer Two books in the Khmer language of Cambodia were printed in March with LATM assistance: 13 Lessons in Christian Doctrine - Youth Edition by Denver Sizemore and John Hunter. Rapha House in Cambodia originated this request, but this book will be distributed throughout the country. Good News for You! (10th Edition) by Moses Samol Seth. Moses has requested LATM assistance with reprint after reprint of this effective evangelistic tool, written by Moses himself. This 10th edition will be used to win many more Cambodians to the Lord. Lao Our partner in Laos recently asked for LATM financial help to reprint his God and Man: 45 Chronological Bible Stories in the Lao language. The first printing of 2000 copies, done in 2014 is nearly all gone. Our field partner says: We have distributed a lot of them in LP since we printed them. Then, in the fall of 2015 we distributed many boxes to other missionaries at a conference. That is when it really took off and they were going like hotcakes. People have used them in different ways some for language study, some for evangelism, some in small groups. The tear-out 24 pic evangelistic tool in the back has been especially effective in sharing the gospel in Laos. It not only shares the basic message of the gospel, but it also addresses the animistic worldview. So it has been good in training Christians as much as it has been good for reaching non-believers. Life of Christ Visualized In our last issue of World News, we highlighted the Life of Christ Visualized project, which was in the works then. Now, 20,000 copies of the books in eight different languages have been printed and distributed in four different countries. Ten more language editions are being prepared! Ask the Lord to bless the many who will come to know Jesus better through this teaching tool. (See back page.)

stand and relate to. It is a very good commentary. volume of this four volume set will be published during 2017. The text for this book has evolved from Dr. Philip's teaching at the Lisu Bible Institute. When Dr. Philip went to China to help teach at some of the small Bible schools, he was surprised at the excitement of the people when they saw this book. He received a similar response from people in Myanmar. Even non-students listened in on the teaching sessions. Thus, we are putting this book forward as a good candidate for printing. Based on the responses, 1000 copies may not be enough. Concerning CLOC-1, he writes: The first volume of The Chronological Life of Christ by Mark E. Moore has been published in Polish language as a result of cooperation between Christian Bible Institute in Warsaw and LATM. This book is great because He our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is great. This book is important, because He is important above all. Thanks to the Christian Bible Institute in Warsaw and LATM, Polish Christians will learn the fresh and meaningful story of Jesus Christ according to the four Gospels, arranged as a harmony. Volume 2 is already translated and will be published soon. Polish Lisu Another book in Lisu by Dr. Philip Ngwapha has been produced since our last newsletter: The Seven Churches of Revelation. Dr. Philip has been writing Bible study books in his own language to his own people in quiet but powerful ways for several years. Field partner David Morse writes: As the title suggests, the book takes each of the seven churches named in Revelation (1:19-3:22), and explains the Scriptures in terms the local people can under- Three more books in Polish have been printed through our partnership with Michał Weremiejewicz in Warsaw: Reflect His Character by James Estep, Gary Johnson and David Roadcup Lead His Church by James Estep, Gary Johnson and David Roadcup The Chronological Life of Christ, vol. 1 by Mark Moore About the first two, Michał writes: Reflect His Character and Lead His Church by Jim Estep, David Roadcup and Gary Johnson have been published in the Polish language with LATM cooperation. These very practical, clear and biblical manuals will be great resources, equipping congregational leaders of Christian Churches in Poland. We are grateful to God as well as to the authors and LATM for making it happen. The first volume of this set was published last year, and the remaining Russian Ten Russian book projects were completed since our last World News: five through Sergei Golovin of Kiev, four through Constantine Nazarov of Moscow, and one through Vasily Trubchyk of Minsk. Sergei Golovin reports that the following books have recently come off the press in Kiev, Ukraine: Letting God Create Your Day, vol. 5 (E-book) by Paul Bartz Joy of Apocalypse (reprint) by Sergei Golovin Introduction to Systematic Apologetics 3rd Edition by Sergei Golovin Basics of Logic - Manual for Believers and Nonbelievers (reprint) by Sergei Golovin

Co-workers with the Creator by Alexander Vyalov Our Moscow field partner, Konstantin Nazarov, recently reported the publication of the four-book series covering a year in the life of Christ, The Person, Power, Preaching and Passion of Jesus, in Russian. Konstantin speaks of his motivation to translate these books: Recently I've heard one of our churches started to study the life of Christ. One of the problems they met was the lack of practical ideas on how to implement Jesus' teaching in their everyday life. I asked them if they had books of Mark Moore and Jon Weece in their church library? They didn't. These books take a churches. Konstantin also remarked on the cover art he chose for these books: You may be a little bit surprised with the cover design, but remember that we print these books for our Orthodox context in order to have group studies with people who have Orthodox background (80% of Russian population). In February, we received a request from Vasili Trubchyk of Minsk, Belarus, to help with the publication of B i b l e Puzzles for Children in Russian, which his publications ministry had prepared. O u r longtime associate George Repetski, now retired from many years of ministry in Belarus, highly recommended we help: this is yet another great opportunity to increase Bible knowledge among children in Belarus and beyond its borders since the work is done in Russian. It s a more fun-type of way to learn Biblical facts for kids. I heartily support the idea. If your mission can support this project in any way, I know the producers will be very grateful for your contribution. every language has the same number for hymns and tunes, up to hymn #400; after #400, each language may add more hymns as desired. This project has enabled each language to realize a hymnbook in their own language, and is intended to raise the level of readers in the Church and community. For the Shan people, this is the first time they have had a bound, quality-print hymnbook in their own language. In addition to hymns, responsive readings (108 selected Scripture verses by topic) are also included. David Morse LATM is pleased to have assisted with the printing of 1,000 copies of the Shan Hymnbook. Spanish Three thousand copies were printed in May. During the Vietnam war, a young Tai Dam girl came to the US as a refugee. A teenage boy became enamored of her and convinced her father to allow them to marry. They settled down in Washington state and raised a family. In later life, their thoughts returned to her family in SE Asia. A few years ago, they moved back to SE Asia to reach out to her people. LATM has helped them publish Songs of Praise for the Tai Dam. Please pray for the Tai Dam, that they may be reached with the Gospel of Jesus! Tamil and Telugu Benni Vedanayagam, our field partner in SE India, reports that two more books in College Press s Bible Student Study Guide series, 13 Lessons on James and Jude by Don Fream and 13 Lessons on Galatians by Kenny Boles, have been printed in Tamil, and College Press s Elders Series (Answer His Call, Reflect His Image, Lead His Church, and Enjoy His People by James Estep, Gary Johnson and David Roadcup) has been printed in Telugu. While at the ICOM in Lexington, brother E. K. Durairaj from India delivered six sample copies of the book Awaken, written by his brother in Tamil. Brother E. K. shared plans for more Tamil books, written by church leaders there. Ukrainian as well as Russian. He and his wife Olga are IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons), but he sees the opportunities that are opening because of the turmoil there in recent months: We are excited about the ministry multiplication the Lord is providing through our Crimean team being dispersed over mainland Ukraine right in time and in a way, that meets the need for books in Ukrainian! Encouraged by the demand for the books we already have in Ukrainian, we have come to the conclusion that we should reprint in Ukrainian our "Biblical Foundations" series of three books that are making the most important impact on the church and society right now: The Bible and Logic: Foundations for Right Thinking The Bible and Ethics: Foundations for a Righteous Life The Bible and Politics: Foundations for a Just Society Sergei reports that The Bible and Politics has already been printed and the other two should be off the press by the end of the year. Ukrainian LATM recently helped with printing costs of a Ukrainian version of Sergei Golovin s Joy of Apocalypse, about the overwhelmingly encouraging message of the book of Revelation to Christians going through hard times. And many in Ukraine are going through hard times right now. Sergei says: The book is much in demand for inspiration and encouragement for the Body of Christ. That is why we need for the book to be published in the mainland Ukraine: both a Russian reprint and a Ukrainian translation. Now that Sergei is living in Kiev instead of Crimea, he is more acutely aware of the need for books in Urdu Saleem Massey reports that 2,000 copies of his book Seven Unique Claims of Jesus, with Special Reference to the Qur an were printed in Pakistan in February. These were distributed in conjunction with construction of a hospital which will share the compassion of Christ with a large region of Pakistan where there are many poor villages without any medical facility.

EXCITING CHANGES Since its beginning, Literature And Teaching Ministries has enjoyed a close connection to College Press Publishing Company. In fact, LATM began because Don DeWelt, founder of College Press, and his son Chris dreamed of publishing Christian books in the many languages of the world. Chris and Carol DeWelt and Phil and Susan Casey worked together as missionaries to Chile in the 70s and 80s. Chris and Carol returned to the US in 1983 and Chris became Marketing Director for College Press, and then president of the company shortly before his father s death in 1991. Chris recruited Phil to lead LATM a year later, and from our earliest days, LATM and College Press have partnered in ministry. Chris and Carol, as sole owners of College Press, talked for years about turning its ownership over to LATM. This year, they decided to gift College Press to LATM, making it a wholly owned subsidiary of Literature And Teaching Ministries. This is not a merger or acquisition. It is a bequest and a generous one. Chris will continue to be involved as a consultant in the ministry of both organizations. What does this mean? On the one hand, this is not a radical change. College Press, as a for-profit subsidiary of LATM, will keep creating Biblically sound books and other resources for Restoration Movement leaders and teachers. On the other hand, it has the potential to be significant, as the dividends from these materials can assist LATM s global publishing efforts. None of the DeWelts have ever benefited from dividend income from College Press. They used any profits to fuel growth and product development. What are some other ways this will benefit the kingdom? LATM s ownership of College Press ensures that people who are solidly in line with its historical roots and Biblical values will continue to manage College Press. College Press s catalog of titles will still be available while joining the extensive resources LATM provides globally. Together, we are in a better position to achieve College Press s mission to publish resources for the local church, and LATM s mission to publish resources for the global church. Streamlining operations can help us publish more materials for both groups more efficiently. What s next? LATM has reached some significant milestones this year. We passed the 2-million-books-printed mark, and achieved our 2016 goal to complete 85 publishing projects. We look forward to celebrating our 25th anniversary in 2017. Our Book Club is growing, new donors join our team of financial supporters, and our field partners are developing new projects. It s an important and successful time at LATM, and we are eager for even more growth because of this new partnership with College Press. Chris and Carol s generous bequest of College Press to LATM has sparked new vision, and together we are dreaming of how LATM can grow into a more dynamic international publishing ministry that reaches more pastors, scholars, students, thinkers, missionaries, and nations than ever before. During this season of giving, we are so grateful for the DeWelts gift and excited about what the new year has in store. Are donations to LATM still needed? Yes! Donations are the life-blood of this ministry. LATM is a donor-funded nonprofit organization. While we hope that dividends from College Press will someday add revenue for LATM, this is not yet a reality. Will College Press cease to exist? No! Not at all! College Press will continue to publish and sell Christian books in English. LATM will continue to help missionaries and national church leaders in many countries to produce books in the languages of their fields. When will this take effect? The legal documents were signed on June 14, 2016, effectively making LATM the sole owner of College Press from that day forward.

Is there any immediate financial benefit for LATM? Not immediately. Recent developments in the publishing industry have caused many publishers to seriously downsize their operations or even close their doors. Today we are happy to say that College Press, though it has significantly downsized, is doing fine and looks to the future with confidence and gratitude. At some point in the years ahead, we expect that College Press will in fact be able to contribute at least modestly to the ministry of LATM. Will you share the same facilities? Yes, just as we always have. Perhaps if you've never visited us, you didn't realize that we share living space with each other. When LATM started in 1992, College Press gave LATM office space to LATM in their building on the corner of 3rd and Wall here in Joplin. When College Press sold that building in 2010, LATM moved with them to the campus of Good News Productions, International. If you want to pay us a visit, please do! We are located in the east end of the south building on GNPI's campus. College Press is on one side of the hallway and LATM is on the other! How many books did you say LATM has produced? The official numbers keep growing, but as of this writing, LATM has assisted in the publication of 954 book projects in 70 different languages, for a total number of books printed of 2,010,800. Just in 2016 alone, LATM has been able to see 90+ projects come to completion in 29 languages for a total of 178,050 books printed. All this has been done solely because of generous donations from people like you who are now reading this newsletter. LITERATURE AND TEACHING MINISTRIES PO Box 645 Joplin, MO 64802-0645 Non-Profit Organization US Postage PAID Joplin, MO 64801 Permit No. 116 Return Service Requested Life of Christ Visualized How s the Project Going? Remember the story of Paat Temas? She is the little girl who was the inspiration for a publishing project that has been fruitful in eight languages so far. For example, the director at Rapha House in Thailand has begun using the books, and has given them to several other ministry workers in her area. Our children like them very much, she says. Some copies have gone to a ministry along the border with Myanmar, some to refugee children in another city, and more to orphanages and churches in the region. Workers along the Thai-China border will distribute the books in both countries. As the books begin to "work" among the people of the languages already printed, other people groups are asking for it in their own tongue. So, editions for 10 more languages are being prepared now. It is exciting to know that children (and adults!) in ever-widening circles will learn the story of Jesus and find the hope he has given us.
