Help the children remember Your power to save Your people. Amen. TEACHER S TIP It s mine! Twos and threes are on the road to becoming more independent. We can encourage their independence while keeping classroom order by following a few simple steps. Listen - What do they really want or need? They may say they want the car Jimmy has when another car similar to Jimmy s would make them just as happy. Offer choices - Children are more likely to cooperate if they feel they have some control over their environment. Wait - If you find a child still is not ready to cooperate, be firm in what their options are. Let them know they may participate whenever they are ready. The God who speaks THE WELCOME Welcome each child as they arrive. Hello. I am glad you are here! Come open the Treasure Chest to find today s treasure. Child unlocks the Treasure Chest to receive a stamp or sticker of a fish or sea life. Let this stamp (or sticker) of a fish (or sea life) remind you that the sea, the fish, and all the sea creatures belong to God. Teacher s Note: These activity centers are designed to reinforce the lesson through hands-on learning experiences either individually or in small groups with the guidance of the teacher. Choose the Bible Activity Centers that best suit the children in your class. Set up the activity centers around the room before children arrive. Allow children to move freely among them. COLORING CENTER: GOD PARTS THE RED SEA SUPPLIES Coloring pages of Moses and the Red Sea, crayons DO Children color their pictures while talking about the story. TALK ABOUT Today, we will hear how God used the waters of the Red Sea to save His people. The water in the Red Sea wasn t red; that was just the name of the sea. Can you color the water in your picture blue? Do the people in the picture look happy or sad? (Happy.) They are happy because God saved them from the Egyptian army that was chasing them. Can you show me your happy face? PLAY-DOUGH CENTER: THE SEA IS HIS SUPPLIES Play-dough, cookie cutters, play-dough tools DO Children create fish and creatures of the sea with the play-dough while discussing today s lesson. TALK ABOUT Who made water? (God.) Do you like to swim in the water? (Children respond.) What else swims in the water? (Children respond.) Can you make a fish or creature you might find in the water with your play-dough? Page 3 of 11

THE WELCOME continued... BLOCK CENTER: PARTING OF THE RED SEA SUPPLIES Blocks DO Today s story is introduced as children create a sea of blocks. TALK ABOUT In our story today, God s people were stuck. They were standing on the edge of the Red Sea with no way to get across. There were no boats, they couldn t all swim, and the sea was too big to walk around. They had to trust God to help them. Do you know what God did? (Children respond.) God separated the water so the people could walk across on dry land! It was a miracle. Let s lay all the blocks on the floor and make a pretend big sea. Then, we can make a path through the middle and remember God s miracle. ACTIVITY CENTER: WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE! SUPPLIES Container partially filled with water, water toys, plastic table cloth or plastic sheet DO Assign a helper to sit with the children while they play in this center. Children take turns playing with the water and toys. TALK ABOUT God uses His creation to speak to us. He made a beautiful world with land and water for us to enjoy because He loves us. What else did God make? (Children respond.) PREPARING FOR WORSHIP Once the service has begun, clean up and begin the planned activities. Let s sing the Clean Up Song as we put our toys away. Praise children as they help. Clean up! Clean up! Everybody, everywhere! Clean up! Clean up! Everybody do your share! The God who speaks THE WORSHIP Supplies: Praise music, optional: musical instruments Teacher Tip: To help children identify time set aside for worship, designate a special corner or area for singing, collecting offering, and watching the worship illustration. Play Praise Time: Love the Lord Your God as children move to that designated area. It s time to praise God with singing and with our prayers. Let s pray to Him right now. Have the children bow their heads and close their eyes. Dear God, we praise You for who You are and all You have done. Amen. In today s story, we will hear how God keeps His people safe. Moses sister led them in a song of praise. Let s sing and praise the Lord as God s people did. Sing: Let Everything That Has Breath. God saved His people because He loved them. His love endures forever; that means it never, ever ends. Let s sing about God s love while we collect our offering. Sing: How Wide? while the offering is being collected. Let s see if our friends Delbert and Lello have heard how the Lord saved His people. Perform The Adventures of Delbert and Lello puppet script or read storybook: God of Wonders Unit 8, Lesson 42. God speaks to us through the Bible, through His creation, and through the people we know. When God speaks, He wants us to listen. That reminds me of our Bible Memory Verse. I will listen to what God the Lord will say, Psalm 85:8. Let s say it together. Practice a few times with the motions. I Point to self. will listen (listen) Hand makes "C" shape and cups the ear. to what (to) Hold up pointer finger of one hand. Touch with pointer finger of other hand. God parts the Red Sea THE WORD Supplies: Teacher s Bible with bookmark at Exodus 14:21, picture of the Bible story, staff (a walking cane or 3-foot stick) Before we begin our Bible Time, let s say our Classroom Promise with the motions. With my eyes on my teacher; Point to eyes. My mouth quiet as can be, Place index finger over mouth as quiet sign. I will listen to hear, Cup hand around ear. How God loves you and me. Hug self, point to others, and then self. Let s reach deep in our pockets and pull out our listening ears. Reach in your pocket and cup your hands behind your ears as if listening. Hold the staff. In our stories, we ve been talking about Moses. Moses was a shepherd and he would have carried a staff like I have here today. He would have used it to keep his sheep from wandering away or to pull a tree branch out of the way. Today, we ll see how God used Moses and his staff to save His people from Pharaoh. Handle Bible as a special treasure, leaving it open to Exodus 14:21. WATCH THE WORD: EXODUS 14:9-10, 13-16, 21-22 Read the story below or retell the passage in your own words. To illustrate the story, show a picture of the Bible story from a children s Bible, the coloring page, or other source. Moses told the people, Follow me! Pharaoh s army chased them to the Red Sea. It was too far to swim away. So God s people became very afraid. Moses told them, Just be still, Our God will fight for you. He raised his staff and stretched out his hand Over the sea as God told him to do. With a mighty wind the Lord saved them By dividing the sea in half. God s people walked across the sea On a safe and very dry path! What happened when Moses raised his staff over the water? (The winds blew and the waters were divided.) What did the Lord do for His people? (He kept them safe.) Page 6 of 11

The Lord saved them THE WAY Teacher Tip: Craft and games can be presented at the same time in different areas or one at a time depending on class size and teaching style. CRAFT: PARTING THE RED SEA Purpose: To illustrate that God parted the Red Sea to save His people. Supplies: Standard-size sturdy light blue and white paper, sand paper (or sturdy brown paper), craft stick, fish stickers or cut outs, glue or glue sticks, crayons Prepare: Cut an 8½-inch x 3-inch strip of sand paper. Cut a wavy edge on the light blue paper across both short edges, fold both edges toward the middle to create three equal sections. The paper should make a flatbottomed U-shape. From sturdy white paper, cut out a 2-inch circle for Moses face. Adaptation for Ages 2-3: This craft has been adapted from the curriculum for ages 4-5. Directions: 1. Moses must have been happy to see God part the sea. Let s draw a happy face on Moses. Draw a happy face on the 2-inch circle. Attach the circle to the craft stick. 2. God parted the water so the people could walk on the sea floor. Glue the strip of sand paper along the center of the folded blue paper. 3. Fish live in the sea. Let s add fish to the water. Place fish stickers or draw fish on the sides of the folded paper. 4. God parted the water so the people could cross the sea safely. Act out the Bible Story by walking Moses between the waves along the sea floor. Craft Discussion: Have you ever been to a beach or seashore? (Children respond.) What color was the water? (Children respond.) The Red Sea is not colored red. Red Sea is just the sea s name. How would you feel if you saw the waters of a lake or ocean part to make a dry path? (Surprised, glad, excited, afraid, etc.) Page 7 of 11

THE WAY continued GAME: ACT IT OUT! Purpose: To help children remember the Bible Story facts. Supplies: Staff (walking cane or long stick), two chairs Moses told God s people, You will see how the Lord will save you today. Let s act out the story to see how it felt to be saved at the Red Sea. Preset Directions: 1. Place the two chairs back-to-back in the middle of the play area for the Red Sea. 2. The first time you play, the teacher plays the part of Moses and holds the staff. 3. Divide the remaining children into two groups: God s people and Pharaoh s army. Assign a second teacher or helper to lead Pharaoh s army. 4. Stand with God s people hold hands in one corner of the room. 5. Pharaoh s army stands together in an adjacent corner and pretends to ride horses and chariots. Act it Out Directions: 1. Moses raises his staff over the Red Sea. Push the two chairs apart as you say, The Lord turned the sea into dry land. (Note: You might consider having your helper push the chairs apart.) 2. Moses leads God s people across the dry land (between the two chairs) as they hold hands. With each step they chant, The Lord will save you today! 3. Pharaoh s army follows on their (pretend) horses and chariots. 4. Pharaoh s army sits down in the middle of the Red Sea, pretending to be stuck in the mud. 5. If there s time, play again, allowing children to switch roles. Choose a child to play the part of Moses. GAME: GOD S MIGHTY WIND Purpose: This activity reminds children of the miracle wind God sent. Supplies: One deep bowl half-filled with water God sent a mighty wind to roll back the waves and part the sea. Let s do an experiment to see how mighty that wind had to be. Directions: 1. Children take turns blowing on the water in bowl to attempt to part the water. 2. Encourage children s efforts while pointing out it would take a miracle to blow the waters apart. 3. Allow everyone to have a turn. It s impossible for the wind to separate water on its own. Who separated the waters of the Red Sea? (God.) God s miracle wind held back the sea walls to save God s people. Page 8 of 11

THE WAY continued SNACK: THE SEA SPEAKS Purpose: To see how the Red Sea miracle spoke of God s power to save. Snack Suggestion: Seashell-shaped pasta or fish-shaped crackers Directions: 1. Serve snack and drink. 2. Let s sing the Blessing Song. Sing to the tune of Frere Jacques or another familiar tune. God our Father, God our Father. Once again, once again, Thank You for our blessings. Thank You for our blessings. Amen. Amen. 3. Lead discussion below while children enjoy their snack. The sea belongs to God. How did He use the sea to save the Israelites? (He divided the sea so the people could escape from Pharaoh s army by walking through on dry land.) The people could not save themselves. They needed a miracle from the Lord. When He parted the sea, it was as if the sea was saying, The Lord saved them! What do you think everyone learned about God that day? (Children respond.) When only 5 minutes remain, begin this segment. FINAL FIVE MINUTES BIBLE MEMORY VERSE Gather children in a circle sitting or standing and practice the words and motions. I Point to self. will listen (listen) Hand makes "C" shape and cups the ear. to what (to) Hold up pointer finger of one hand. Touch with pointer finger of other hand.
