Lesson 8 Mary s Special Blessing Get Into the Bible Read Your Bible Matthew 28:9-15 and John 20:11-20 Put your initials on the line when you have finished reading the passages. Bible Vocabulary watch: guard or guards Circle T if the statement is true and F if it is false. 1. T F Many Jews believed the disciples of Jesus stole His body. 2. T F Mary Magdalene thought Jesus was the gardener. 3. T F Rabboni means gardener. 4. T F The disciples had assembled to discuss a plan to punish the Jews for crucifying Jesus. ANALYZE THE READING About two thousand years ago, the chief priests and elders of Israel tried to cover up an event they wanted to remain hidden. However, they were not trying to hide the wrong that they had done. No, in this case, the elders were hiding a much bigger story: Jesus Christ had risen from the dead! His tomb was empty! The Sanhedrin thought they had disposed of Jesus when they convinced Pilate to crucify Him. But three days after He was buried, Roman guards came into the council room and reported that a severe earthquake had rocked the tomb where Jesus was buried. A lightning-bright angel appeared and frightened the guards so badly that they fell as dead. How could the Jewish rulers deal with this shocking news? How could they convince the common people that Christ could not really be alive? They plotted a cover up. They bribed the guards to say that they had fallen asleep, and while they slept, the disciples stole Jesus body. This was a serious admission for a Roman guard. Such a failure was punishable by death! The chief priests hardness of heart was astounding. They heard directly from the guards that Jesus was risen. They learned that an angel had attended His resurrection. Yet, they still refused to believe. They do not seem to have paused even for a moment to consider that they had indeed put to death the Son of God. Earlier, Mary Magdalene had come to the tomb with some other women. Now, we find her back at the tomb, weeping. Stooping down to look into the grave, Mary saw two angels where 31

Lesson 8 Jesus body had lain. After they spoke to her, Mary turned to see a man standing behind her. We do not know why Mary did not recognize Jesus at first; perhaps it was because of her tears. Perhaps His appearance had changed. Either way, when the Lord tenderly spoke Mary s name, she recognized Him. The word Rabboni means my teacher or my master in Hebrew. Mary felt a very personal attachment to Jesus as her Lord and Guide. Matthew pictures the women who first met the risen Jesus as falling down before Him and hugging His feet. This is probably what Mary was doing when Jesus told her not to cling to Him. Why did Jesus tell Mary not to cling to Him? What did Jesus mean by saying I am not yet ascended to my Father? There has been much debate about the Lord s words here. Perhaps the simplest answer is that Jesus was telling Mary that she, and His other followers, could no longer relate to Him as they had before. He was not returning to His former earthly life. He would now ascend to Heaven, and they would now know Him as their risen Lord and God. This understanding explains why He then told Mary to deliver a special message to the disciples: I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. The most important truth for His followers to learn now was that He would ascend to His former glory. There He will reign forever. When Jesus said my Father and your Father and my God and your God, He revealed two things. First of all, He showed that there was a great difference between Him and the disciples. He did not say, I ascend to our Father. He was the Son by nature and divine right. They would be adopted children of God, born into His family only through the work of the Eternal Son. 32

Lesson 8 On the other hand, Jesus did say, I ascend to my Father and your Father. In this, He encourages us that we can, indeed, be true sons and daughters of the living God. As the Old Testament prophets promised, we are no longer slaves, but truly God s precious children through Jesus. Mary Magdalene loved Jesus deeply. She sought Him at this moment when no other did. Mary was privileged above all other human beings: she was the first person to meet and speak with the risen Son of God. Her love and faithfulness made it possible for her to experience this special blessing. What a precious reward for Mary s faithful devotion! On the evening of the Resurrection, the disciples were gathered behind locked doors, fearing the Jewish leaders. Suddenly Jesus was in their midst, saying, Peace be unto you. He showed them His hands and side. They were glad to see the Lord. This first appearance to them convinced them He was alive. Jesus appeared to many who believed on Him after His resurrection. He appeared personally to His disciples a number of times. These bodily appearances convinced them once and for all that He was alive and would always be so. Magdalene Mary was called Mary Magdalene because she came from the city of Magdala. Magdala was three miles north of Tiberias, the capital city of Herod Antipas. Located on the west side of the Sea of Galilee, Mary s town was a fishing village. It was also famous for cloth dyed with a dye taken from shellfish caught in the Sea of Galilee. At the time of Christ, Magdala was mostly a Gentile city with a population of about 4,000. Its racetrack for horses and chariots attracted visitors; however Jews did not attend Roman sports events. Bible Vocabulary furlong (fər lȯŋ): one-eighth of a mile (one-fifth of a km); three score (60) furlongs is about 7 miles (12 km) holden (hōl dən): prevented Circle T if the statement is true and F if it is false. 1. T F Emmaus was a section of Jerusalem. 2. T F The two on the road to Emmaus recognized Christ immediately. 3. T F Jesus stayed with the disciples for the evening meal without being invited. 4. T F The disciples recognized Jesus when He blessed and broke the bread. ANALYZE THE READING Do you like to travel with friends? Do you enjoy talking as you travel? As today s reading opens, we find two friends traveling from Jerusalem to a town called Emmaus, a distance of about 60 furlongs. They are talking excitedly as they walk. One of these travelers was Cleopas; the other is unnamed. As they went along, Jesus joined them. However, like Mary, these travelers did not recognize Jesus. Was it because God prevented them from seeing Him, or was it that His new appearance made it difficult for them to identify Him as Jesus? What we can affirm is this: these two followers of Christ were trying to make sense of all that had happened over the last few days. Jesus had died, which they had not expected. Then He had risen, which they also had not anticipated. Now it was reported that other disciples had seen Him alive! What was going on in Jerusalem? What was God doing? As they tried to understand God s wonderful works, Jesus appeared to them to teach them things they could not understand without divine assistance. This little scene outside Jerusalem illustrates a wonderful fact about God. He is eager to give light to those who seek the truth. Many truths about God can only be understood through the Holy Spirit. Our minds simply cannot grasp the 36

Lesson 9 things of God. So He comes through His Spirit to give us understanding and wisdom. We can ask Him and He will answer, though sometimes it takes us a long time to hear what He has to say. Jesus showed these seekers how the Old Testament Scriptures point to Him. Beginning at Moses means that Jesus started this amazing lesson with the books Moses wrote, from Genesis through Deuteronomy. The Lord proceeded to explain verses throughout the Jewish Bible that pointed to Him. He went right through the books written by the prophets, revealing prophecy after prophecy foretelling the Messiah s coming. What an amazing conversation that must have been! Consider what Jesus was teaching as they walked along the road. He pointed to the Scriptures to teach these men about Himself. As the Word of God, Jesus revealed God s truth whenever He spoke. By His example, He also showed us that we should always turn to the Scriptures to find answers for our questions. We can rely on what the Bible says, for all its teachings point to Christ. When the party neared Emmaus, Jesus acted as though He would continue walking, but the disciples urged Him to stay with them. At the evening meal He took bread, blessed it, and broke it. Then they recognized Him! Just like that, He disappeared. The disciples commented to each other how their hearts had been blessed and inspired by His words. Hurrying back to Jerusalem, the travelers told the other disciples about their encounter with the Lord. LIFE OF CHRIST Circle the letters of the answers. & 5. Memorize the memory verse for this section. When you are ready, ask your teacher for Quiz 2. Jesus Appears to His Followers The risen Saviour appeared many times to a variety of people before His ascension. He talked to the women who had come to worship at His tomb, to grieving disciples and doubting Thomas, to travelers on the road, and to a crowd of over five hundred. He is alive. Do you believe in Him? If so, He offers you this blessing: Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. Memory Verse: Section 3 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Matthew 28:18-20 40

Lesson 11 Doubt Banished Get Into the Bible Read Your Bible John 20:19-31 Put your initials on the line when you have finished reading the passage. Answer the questions. 1. How did the disciples feel when they saw the Lord? 2. What important news did the other disciples tell Thomas? 3. For what did Jesus rebuke Thomas? 4. What did Thomas say when he saw Jesus? Vocabulary Word commission (kə mi shən): a command to act or perform certain duties under the authority of another ANALYZE THE READING Have you ever heard a report you found really difficult to believe? News about an unusual event is often hard to accept. Thomas, one of Jesus disciples, was faced with that problem. Along with the other disciples, Thomas had witnessed Jesus death and burial. When news reached him that Jesus was alive again, Thomas found it hard to believe! Jesus appeared to His disciples on the evening of His resurrection. Suddenly, He was in their midst, behind closed doors. He gave them a greeting of peace and showed them His hands and His side. Jesus then gave His followers a commission. He was sending them even as His Father had sent Him. In their Gospels, Matthew and Luke record a slightly longer commission. It may be that Jesus gave the disciples this commission more than once, for they often needed Him to repeat His teachings. All three records, however, speak about the same essential task. The disciples were to go into the world and carry on the ministry of Jesus. The disciples would require authority to carry out this task. So Jesus breathed on them and promised that He would give them the Holy Spirit, who would empower their teaching and 41

Lesson 11 their lives. We know from Acts 2 that the Spirit was poured out on the church at Pentecost. Jesus gave the disciples another responsibility at this time. As representatives of His church, they were charged with declaring the basis upon which sins are forgiven or not forgiven. In other words, they would declare that when people believe in Christ, their sins are forgiven, but when people refuse to believe, they remain in their sins. The other disciples later told Thomas about their encounter with the risen Lord, but Thomas refused to believe unless he could see Jesus for himself. Did you notice how firmly Thomas declared his disbelief? He spoke as though he would require three separate proofs that Jesus was alive: seeing his wounded hands, touching them, and touching the wound in Jesus side. However, when Jesus appeared eight days later, Thomas was immediately ready to accept that it was Jesus standing before him. Jesus had mercy on Thomas. He gently reproved Thomas for his disbelief. Through that gentle rebuke, Jesus drew Thomas to Himself. We know from Thomas s later life that Jesus had won his heart, for he went on to courageously fulfill Jesus commission at great personal cost. Thomas s Faith When Thomas first heard that Jesus was risen, he could not believe it. He is, therefore, sometimes called doubting Thomas. Was Thomas a doubter? Not for long! You can read about Thomas s life on pages 89-91 of The Martyrs Mirror. Here is a quotation about Thomas s life after Jesus commissioned him and the other disciples to carry on Jesus work: As Parthia, India, Ethiopia, and many other countries had as his portion been assigned to him, he traveled through them. He dreaded, however, as it appears, to go to the moors and the savage nations of India. Nevertheless, God having strengthened him, he there converted many to God. While Thomas was in the islands of the East Indies, he was persecuted by idolatrous heathen and was cast into a glowing furnace. The Martyrs Mirror goes on to say, He conformed in steadfastness unto his Lord Jesus Christ, whom he confessed even unto death. Today there are churches in India that bear the name of Thomas. 42

Lesson 11 Christ also pronounced a special blessing on those who have not seen Him and yet believe in His resurrection. This blessing, of course, points to a later time, and to people who were not present when Christ died and rose again. You may remember that before His death, Jesus had prayed for those who would believe in Him through the disciples words. That prayer was for all who would become Christians in the centuries after Jesus lived. It was a prayer for us! The blessing Christ pronounced also includes you, if you believe that Christ rose from the dead. We now have the testimony of the disciples, which has been preserved for us in the Scriptures. The Gospels give us a fourfold record of the life of Christ. Acts reveals how the Holy Spirit did, indeed, work through the disciples to bring many to faith in Jesus. We also have letters written by several disciples and the Apostle Paul. These letters further explain the work of Christ and the meaning of faith in Him. We also have the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth, so that we can understand and obey the things we read in the Scriptures. But we do need to believe by faith. As John says in verse 31, this is the reason that he and the other New Testament writers left a written record. If you believe, you have eternal life through Jesus name. LIFE OF CHRIST Circle T if the statement is true and F if it is false. Correct any false statements. 5. T F All of the disciples were together the first time Jesus appeared to them. & 6. Lesson 11 THINK IT THROUGH Are believers today underprivileged because they have not seen Christ in the flesh? Jesus gave a blessing to those who believe in His resurrection without the evidence Thomas had. From this we learn that by faith in Jesus we will possess the very same blessedness that the disciples enjoyed. Through the gracious plan of God, believers approximately two thousand years after the Resurrection experience no loss because they have not seen Christ. Turn to Hebrews 11 and answer the following questions. 17. According to verse 6, what is necessary to please God? 18. Read verse 33.
