He walks with me and talks with me along life s narrow way. He lives, He lives, salvation to impart! You ask me how I know he lives? He lives within my heart. Welcome Question to Ponder What does family mean to you? Has your understanding of family changed with time? Call to Worship The time has come for worship, and we have gathered here, family and friends in the faith, sisters and brothers and siblings, one of another, to bring the living of our lives as an offering of thanksgiving to God who formed us in the womb, and shaped us, and nourishes us day to day. We come as God s people. We come as we are. May this time be a time of giving thanks. Come, and let us worship God. (Written by Bob Root. Gathering, Lent/Easter 2018, page 49. Used with Opening Prayer God, on this day when we celebrate and give thanks for our families, we recognize that we do not all come carrying the same experiences and memories. Some of us come feeling blessed, sustained by happy memories, looking forward to life together with those we love. Some of us have been badly hurt: our memories are bitter; we dread those times when family togetherness is unavoidable. Many of us carry a mixed bag of blessing and hurt: sometimes we give thanks; sometimes we lament. Whoever we are, whatever we bring with us today, may we all find a place in Christ s family, in whose name we pray. Amen. (Written by John Moses. Gathering, Lent/Easter 2018, page 49. Litany Celebration of Families Families are special. Families are good. Families are big and small, made up of all kinds of people: singles, couples, children, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, friends and companions, people that love, people that care, people that want to share love with others. Families are special; the people that make up our families are special. May God bless all our families! (From The Whole People of God curriculum. 2018 Wood Lake Publishing. Used with Passing of the Peace Ministry of Music WE LISTEN FOR THE WORD OF GOD Wings of the Dawn Scripture Sharing Acts 1:15-17, 21-26 Responsive Psalm 1 Happiness can t be captured. Like a wild bird or bouncing ball, it is always just beyond your grasp. It is not found in fads or fashions, nor in climbing to the top of the heap. Happiness comes from immersing yourself in God. Instead of struggling to stay on top, yield yourself to the deep flow of God s universe. You will not drown. You will be swept along by forces beyond your imagining. Foam on the surface blows about; driftwood piles up on sandbars; people obsessed with themselves end up as rotting debris on the rocks. 3 But the current rolls on. To find happiness, let yourself be carried away by something stronger than a social eddy. (Paraphrase from Everyday Psalms by James Taylor. Wood Lake Books.) What can I bring? What can I say? What can I sing? I ll sing with joy. I ll say a prayer. I ll bring my love. I ll do my share. Offertory prayer Loving God, we come to you praying that you will enlarge our vision of family until it includes everyone that is part of your family. As family, we are asked to love and care for each other. We bring our gifts to you to support the members of your family, because they are also members of our family. Receive and bless our offering in the name of the Risen Christ. Amen. (Written by Fern Gibbard. Gathering, Lent/Easter 2018, page 49. Used with Minute for Mission (printed) Announcements 4

DONATIONS Children Learn What They Live By Dorothy Law Nolte, Ph.D. If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, they learn to fight. If children live with fear, they learn to be apprehensive. If children live with pity, they learn to feel sorry for themselves. If children live with ridicule, they learn to feel shy. If children live with jealousy, they learn to feel envy. If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty. If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence. If children live with tolerance, they learn patience. If children live with praise, they learn appreciation. If children live with acceptance, they learn to love. If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves. If children live with recognition, they learn it is good to have a goal. If children live with sharing, they learn generosity.
