We speak of Jesus but who is He? Jesus -- the King 1

-- JESUS -- Prophet, Priest, King What is a prophet? What is a priest? What is a king? 6/12/2018 Jesus -- the Prophet 2

As originally created by God, man was to be prophet, priest and king. As such, he was endowed with: knowledge and understanding [prophet ] righteousness and holiness [priest ] dominion, oversight of creation [king ] 6/12/2018 Jesus -- the Prophet 3

As originally created by God, man was to be prophet, priest and king. As such, he was endowed with: knowledge and understanding [prophet ] righteousness and holiness [priest ] dominion, oversight of lower creation [king ] 6/12/2018 Jesus -- the Prophet 4

As originally created by God, man was to be prophet, priest and king. A quick review! JESUS -- the PROPHET Jesus -- the King 6

As God/Prophet, Jesus is still in the business of forth -telling and fore -telling! In His unwavering love for me He is committed to my present and my future! 6/12/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 7

JESUS the PRIEST Jesus -- the King 8

In the NT Jesus becomes our great high priest. A Jesus offered a perfect sacrifice for sin A Jesus continually brings us near to God A Jesus as Priest continually prays for us Jesus -- the King 9

6/12/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 10

6/12/2018 Jesus -- the Priest 11

For you are a chosen people. You are a kingdom of priests, God s holy nation, his very own possession. This is so you can show the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. (1Pet.2:9) Jesus -- the King 12

WE HAVE ACCESS! Jesus -- the King 13

JESUS - the KING Jesus -- the King 14

What is a king? Dictionary: a) A male monarch, esp. of one who inherits his position and rules for life; b) A paramount chief; c) GOD, CHRIST (Zech 14:16) d) Piece in chess, playing card, a checker that has been crowned, etc! Jesus -- the King 15

In the Bible: King (BASILEUS) is used of Christ as King of the Jews King of Israel King of kings the King in judging nations & men God, the great King the King eternal, incorruptible, invisible King of the ages Jesus -- the King 16

There has ever only been ONE king who is sovereign over all, has supreme dominion, is all-knowing, all powerful, infinitely wise and whose kingdom is eternal -- GOD! Jesus -- the King 17

Remember the Abrahamic Covenant? I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you. (Gen. 12:2-3) Jesus -- the King 18

Then the LORD brought Abram outside beneath the night sky and told him, Look up into the heavens and count the stars if you can. Your descendants will be like that too many to count! And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD declared him righteous because of his faith. (Gen. 15:5-6) Jesus -- the King 19

I will make a covenant with you, by which I will guarantee to make you into a mighty nation. Then God said to him, This is my covenant with you: I will make you the father of not just one nation, but a multitude of nations! (Gen. 17:1-4) Jesus -- the King 20

What s more, I am changing your name. It will no longer be Abram; now you will be known as Abraham, for you will be the father of many nations. I will give you millions of descendants who will represent many nations. Kings will be among them! (Gen.17:5-6) Jesus -- the King 21

And then to Sarah: Yes, I will bless her richly, and she will become the mother of many nations. Kings will be among her descendants! (Gen.17:16) Jesus -- the King 22

To Samuel Look, you are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king like all the other nations have. (1Sam.8:4-5) Jesus -- the King 23

Do as they say, the LORD replied, for it is me they are rejecting, not you. They don t want me to be their king any longer. Ever since I brought them from Egypt they have continually forsaken me and followed other gods. And now they are giving you the same treatment. Do as they ask, but solemnly warn them about how a king will treat them. (1 Sam.8:7-9) Jesus -- the King 24

But the people refused to listen to Samuel s warning. Even so, we still want a king, they said. We want to be like the nations around us. Our king will govern us and lead us into battle. So Samuel told the LORD what the people had said, and the LORD replied, Do as they say, and give them a king. (1 Sam. 8:19-22) Jesus -- the King 25

(Note: although the people demanded a king, GOD directed the choice of that king through Samuel.) Saul was chosen king, in place of God. The Spirit of God came upon Saul. (1 Sam. 10:10) And the Lord was sorry he had ever made Saul King of Israel. (1Sam. 15:35b) Jesus -- the King 26

Then God directed Samuel to find and anoint Saul s successor. David was anointed king And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him from that day on. (1 Sam.16:13) Jesus -- the King 27

Davidic Covenant In the context of David s reign as king, God announced through Nathan the prophet his plan that the kingdom of David would continue forever and a descendant of David would sit on the throne. Nathan told David, When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom. (2 Sam. 7:12) Jesus -- the King 28

The Lord declares that he will make a house for you a dynasty of kings! For when you die and are buried with your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, your own offspring, and will make his kingdom strong. He is the one who will build a house for My Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. Jesus -- the King 29

I will be his Father, and he will be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men. But My love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before Me; your throne will be established forever. (2 Sam.7:13-16) Jesus -- the King 30

The Davidic Covenant takes its place with the Abrahamic Covenant as a declaration of God s purpose to have Christ sit on the throne of David forever [as KING!]. Jesus -- the King 31

Once for all, I have sworn by My holiness and I will not lie to David that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before Me like the sun; it will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky! (Ps.89:35-37) Jesus -- the King 32

JESUS CHRIST Abrahamic Covenant Davidic Covenant Jesus -- the King 33

Isaiah pointed to Jesus the King For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. And the government will rest on his shoulders. These will be his royal titles: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Is. 7:14) Jesus -- the King 34

His ever expanding, peaceful government will never end. He will rule forever with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David. The passionate commitment of the LORD Almighty will guarantee this! (Isa.9:6-7) Jesus -- the King 35

Jeremiah pointed to Jesus the King For the time is coming when I will place a righteous Branch on King David s throne. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right throughout the land. And this is his name: The LORD IS Our Righteousness. (Jer. 23:5-6) Jesus -- the King 36

Daniel pointed to Jesus the King I saw someone who looked like a Son of Man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. He was given authority, honor, and royal power over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed. (Dan.7:13-14) Jesus -- the King 37

Zechariah pointed to Jesus the King Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey even on a donkey s colt. (Zech.9:9) Jesus -- the King 38

The Lord will reign forever and ever (Ex.15:18) O LORD, God of our ancestors, you alone are the God who is in heaven. You are ruler of all the kingdoms of the earth. You are powerful and mighty; no one can stand against you. (2 Chr.20:6) Jesus -- the King 39

Who is the King of glory? The LORD Almighty-- he is the King of glory. (Ps.24:10) Jesus -- the King 40

In the NT There is expectant anticipation for a Messiah, or King. The terms seem at times, to be used interchangeably. Jesus -- the King 41

Matthew starts his book by writing: This is a record of the ancestors of Jesus the Messiah, a descendant of King David and of Abraham. (Mt.1:1) Jesus -- the King 42

Wise men from eastern lands arrived and said: Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We have seen his star as it arose, and we have come to worship him. (Mt.2:2) Jesus -- the King 43

Remember the virgin Mary! She was engaged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. (Lk.1:26-38) Jesus -- the King 44

The angel Gabriel said to Mary: You will become pregnant and have a son, and you are to name him Jesus. He will be very great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the LORD God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. And he will reign over Israel forever; his kingdom will never end. (Lk.1:31-33) Jesus -- the King 45

Nathanael replied, Teacher, you are the Son of God the King of Israel. (Jn.1:49) Jesus -- the King 46

Jesus Himself admitted to being king -- I am not an earthly king my Kingdom is not of this world. Pilate replied, You are a king then? You say that I am a king, and you are right, Jesus said. I was born for that purpose. And I came to bring truth to the world. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true. (Jn.18:36-37) Jesus -- the King 47

In the end, the reality of Jesus being the King became a reason for the cross. A signboard was fastened to the cross above Jesus head, announcing the charge against him. It read: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews. (Matt.27:27) God, in Christ, was still rejected as King! Jesus -- the King 48

The dominion of the Christ/King is: Eternal (Is.9:6-7) He will reign forever Universal (Zech.9:10) Your king will bring peace to the nations. His realm will stretch from sea to sea... Jesus -- the King 49

Over nature (Mt.8:37) him. Even the wind and the waves obey Over the church (Eph.1:22) And God has put all things under the authority of Christ, and he gave him this authority for the benefit of the church. Jesus -- the King 50

Over heavenly powers (1 Pet.3:22) Now Christ has gone to heaven. He is seated in the place of honor next to God, and all the angels and authorities and powers are bowing before him. Jesus -- the King 51

John writes: Grace and peace from the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come; from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness to these things, the first to rise from the dead, and the commander of all the rulers of the world. All praise to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by shedding his blood for us. He has made us his Kingdom and his priests who serve before God his Father. Give to him everlasting glory! He rules forever and ever! Amen! (Rev.1:5-6) Jesus -- the King 52

This is the message from the one who is the Amen the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God s creation: I know the things you do I will invite everyone who is victorious to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne. (Rev.3:14, 15a, 21) Jesus -- the King 53

I am the LORD, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything to hard for me? (Jer. 32:27) Jesus -- the King 54

NO! ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! EVER! Jesus -- the King 55

As it is in HEAVEN For all eternity, we shall forever function as subordinate prophets, priests, and kings, yet always subject to the Lord Jesus, the supreme Prophet, Priest, King! God s will on EARTH Jesus -- the King 56

Rejoice the Lord is King Charles Wesley, 1746 Rejoice, the Lord is King: your Lord & King adore; Rejoice, give thanks & sing, & triumph evermore: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. Jesus, the Savior, reigns, the God of truth & love; When he had purged our stains, he took his seat above: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice Jesus -- the King 57

His kingdom cannot fail, he rules o er earth & heav n; The keys of death & hell are to our Jesus giv en: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice. He sits at God s right hand till all his foes submit, And bow to his command, and fall beneath his feet: Lift up your heart, lift up your voice; Rejoice, again I say, rejoice Jesus -- the King 58

Sovereignty is something I love to ascribe to God. -- Jonathan Edwards-- Jesus -- the King 59

Benediction Glory and honor to God forever and ever. He is the eternal King, the unseen one who never dies; he alone is God. Amen (1 Tim. 1:17) Jesus -- the King 60
