Marengo United Methodist Church From the Pastor's Heart On Sunday we celebrated our Confirmands joining the church during our 10:00 am worship service. So at both services I talked about the importance of a living faith, a faith that's based on action, on what we do, on a lifestyle of following Jesus. Too often we think faith is about getting our beliefs right and arranging the theological furniture in our heads. Not that beliefs are unimportant, but what's most important are how we live as followers of Jesus, not what we believe. This Sunday we go to one service at 9:30am. We'll have one service through Labor Day Sunday.

Remember to adjust your Sunday schedule. And speaking of remembering, this Sunday will be Memorial Day Sunday, so we'll talk about the gift of remembering. The reason we remember what happened before is it gives us meaning for our present. It's important to remember so we can celebrate what God is doing now and where God is leading us into the future. See you Sunday...and bring a friend! Peace, Pastor Doc Parents, PARENTING 101 We all want our children to live life fully. One of the joys of childhood is the innocence that allows them to live with reckless abandon. As our children get a little older they begin to see the real world. Accompanying that can be some real fears that take hold in their lives.

How do we as parents help them confront fears, deal with them, and move past them so that they don t control our child s mind? Take a look at this video to see an overview of helping your child deal with fear. https://vimeo.com/parentministry/review/84833565/5efe7b842 2 My kids call it yelling when I raise my voice But I call it motivational speaking for the selective hearing!

Save the Date! Vacation Bible School August 6-10th We are looking for volunteers! If you would like to be a part of a fun-filled ministry helping to bring our youngest into a relationship with Jesus, please contact Alison Dwyer to volunteer your time! We need: *Adult/teen crew leaders *Storytellers *Photographer *Imagination Station Leader *Be watching for how you can donate items for this event This afternoon, Molly McIntyre, the daughter of Joan McIntyre, visited the church to let us know that her mother passed away on February 26, 2016 in California. She wanted those of you who knew Joan to be aware that she had passed away. If anyone would like to contact Molly, we have her contact information at the church office.

Please wear red on Sunday, June 3rd, as we celebrate Pentecost, the remembrance of the Holy Spirit's descent upon the church. Make Your Gifts Electronically it s Easy! 1) Go to your online banking information and set MUMC up as an auto pay (just like you would any other bill you want to pay through your checking account on line.) 2) Your bank will send the church a check on your behalf and this is then recorded on your contribution statements. This service is FREE!

Bishop's Appeal *As war ravages her nation, a young girl's family makes the heart-wrenching decision to flee her home. *In another country, violent threats from gangs force a teenage boy to leave his city. *In the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake, thousands of people migrate to a neighboring land. These are examples of actual hardships in our world. Today, more than 65 million people have been displaced by war, persecution, famine, or natural disaster - in the highest number since WWII. By the end of this day, over 28,000 more people will begin their own difficult and treacherous journeys in search of safe haven. Bring an offering $$ to the 2018 Annual Conference (June 3-5) to help families affected by the Global Migration Crisis. 75% will go to the Global Migration Advance for international assistance to refugees and migrants. 25% will stay in Northern Illinois to support organizations like Refugee One and World Relief that work with local immigrant and refugee families. Deadline for all donations is Sunday, May 27, 2018

This group has been spreading the good news of Jesus Christ through songs and testimonies since July 1981. They have performed all across middle America with an emphasis on the smooth harmonies exemplifying southern gospel music. All are welcome, and admission is free, a Free will offering will be taken.

2018 NIC Annual Conference Mission Challenge When we meet the needs of those who suffer, we actually minister to Jesus, who said: I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you gave me clothes to wear. I was sick and you took care of me. I was in prison and you visited me. (Matthew 25:35-36CEB) Thank you for supporting this year's Mission Challenge to provide Cleaning Kit items through the Midwest Mission Distribution Center (MMDC) and financial support for Hurricane Relief through UMCOR. The Districts are challenged to bring specific items that make up a cleaning bucket. The Elgin District (our district) has been asked to provide24 heavy duty trash bags (per donation) rolled (size: 33-45 gallon) and 1,500 (5 per donation) scouring pads (no stainless steel or pads with soap built in like SOS Pads). There will be a box in the lobby for your items to be placed. We will make sure all items make it to the drop-off center. Monetary donations may be sent to MMDC at 1001 Mission Drive in Pawnee, IL 62558. To support UMCOR's efforts, please make your check payable to Advance GCFA, add U.S. Disaster Response Advance 901670 on the memo line and mail to: Advance GCFA, P.O. Box 9068, New York, NY 10087-90624 Deadline for all donations is May 27, 2018
