Message for WEDNESDAY NIGHT, November 1, 2017 Christian Hope Church of Christ, Plymouth, North Carolina by Reggie A. Braziel, Minister JESUS HEALS THE WOMAN WITH THE BLOOD ISSUE Mark 5: 25-34 (NKJV) Please open your Bibles to MARK chapter five. Our text tonight will come from verses 25-34. Mark 5:25-34 (NKJV) 25 Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, 26 and had suffered many things from many physicians. She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. 28 For she said, If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well. 29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in herbody that she was healed of the affliction. 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, Who touched My clothes? 31 But His disciples said to Him, You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, Who touched Me? 32 And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. 33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction.

Introduction Perhaps one of the things we all take for granted most in life is GOOD HEALTH. Every day you and I are able to open our eyes...get out of bed by ourselves and go about our daily tasks is truly a blessing from GOD...and we ought to THANK HIM! Think of all the people who face each and every day with the hopelessness that they will probably never be healthy again another day of life. -Think of that person who awakens each morning knowing he or she will spend their entire day confined to a bed. -Think of that person who awakens every day who has to slide their lifeless legs into a wheelchair. -Think of that person who has to take an injection every morning just to tolerate the intense pain. -Think of that person who has to take an oxygen tank with them everywhere they go. ILLUSTRATION-----My aunt Alice Jean Hodge was one of the sweetest people I ever knew. For the last 10-12 years of her life she battled Multiple Sclerosis. Every day she lived with chronic pain. Eventually it crippled her before it finally claimed her life. But you know, none of us ever heard her complain about her situation. She was powerful testimony of how a child of God can and should handle adversity in life. In our scripture text this evening we meet a woman who was all-to-familiar with physical suffering.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION Let me give you a little background information to our text... Jesus has just returned from the eastern side of the Sea of Galilee, where he had driven the Legion of Demons out of the two men into the herd of swine. Upon his return to the area around Capernaum, Jesus is met by a huge crowd of people who are wanting to be healed of various types of physical afflictions. We notice the first situation Jesus dealt with involved the little twelve year old daughter of Jairus, who was one of the rulers in the synagogue. We are not told just what this little girl suffered from, but it is lifethreatening and Jesus is the only HOPE Jairus has. Jairus is just one of multitudes of people who are trying to get an audience with the Great Physician. Notice carefully how verse 24 describes this crowd. So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him. That term thronged Him literally means a a smothering crowd. We ve all been in smothering crowds before haven t we? Think of crowded mall at Christmas time where shoppers are literally shoulder to shoulder. Or think of a massive crowd of people waiting to get into a ball game or a concert. JESUS was completely hemmed in by people on all sides. But out of this huge crowd of people, there now emerges one woman, desperately seeking HOPE for her HOPELESS SITUATION.

First of all let's look at... I. THE WOMAN S DISEASE verses 25, 26 (A) In Verse 25 we see THE WOMAN S HELPLESSNESS. 25 Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years, (KJV) calls her condition an issue of blood. (New Living Translation) calls it hemorrhaging. In his book, All The Miracles of the Bible, Herbert Lockyer describes the woman s disease this way. This woman suffered from a malady in which there was a bodily discharge of her blood, perhaps something akin to hemorrhoids or some organic disease of the female uterus. While we may not know the exact nature of her disease, we do know that a daily loss of blood would have greatly affected this woman psychologically as well as physically. It is interesting to note, this woman had been dealing with her hemorrhaging for 12 years, which was how long Jairus daughter had been alive.

(B) In Verse 26 we see THE WOMAN S HOPELESSNESS It wasn t as if this poor woman hadn t tried to find a cure. She had gone from one doctor to another, virtually spending every dime she had to find doctor who could help her. Perhaps this was a very common ailment in women back then and they simply had no cure for it...or...it could have been a relatively new disease that was beyond their realm of medical knowledge at that time. Either way, this woman has been to every doctor in yellow pages, and her condition is growing worse with each passing year. --------------------- We must not forget the SPIRITUAL aspect of this woman s disease either. According to Leviticus 15: 19-30, this woman s loss of blood made her spiritually or ceremonially unclean...which meant she couldn t worship with others in the temple or be out in public touching others. So this DISEASE had affected the WOMAN... Physically...Psychologically...Socially...and...Spiritually

Secondly, let s consider... II. THE WOMAN S DETERMINATION vs. 27, 28 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. 28 For she said, If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well. 1. To get to JESUS this woman had to overcome TWO BIG OBSTACLES. (A) One was THE OBSTACLE OF HER EMBARRASSING CONDITION Illustration----One of the valuable lessons I learned from Professor Ken Overdorf in my Practical Ministries Course at Johnson Bible college was this: When making a hospital call on a female patient, never ask her why she s in the hospital, because she might just tell you and both of you will be embarrassed. This woman had a physical ailment I doubt she was even comfortable discussing with her doctor, let alone family and friends. I doubt very seriously if she ever mustered up the courage to put herself on the Prayer List down at the Temple...because her condition was of a very delicate, sensitive nature. But she was DETERMINED not to allow her Embarrassing Condition to keep her from seeing Jesus.

(B) Secondly this woman faced THE OBSTACLE OF THE ENORMOUS CROWD We already learned in VERSE 24 there was an ENORMOUS CROWD of people wanting to get to Jesus that day. Verse 25 tells us the woman had been battling this blood loss for 12 years...and Verse 26 tells us her condition had grown worse. What you have when you put all that together is A WOMAN IN AN OBVIOUSLY WEAKENED CONDITION trying to squeeze through an ENORMOUS CROWD. This appears to be an INSURMOUNTABLE OBSTACLE. 3. But VERSE 28 reveals the driving force behind her DETERMINATION. If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed. 4. Her determination to see Jesus wasn t just driven by human will, it was driven by an UN-SHAKEABLE FAITH in Jesus Christ. -By Faith, she approached JESUS in a HUMBLE SPIRIT If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well. She wasn't even looking to gain an audience with Jesus; in fact, she wasn't even looking to speak to Him. All she ` wanted to do was get close enough to Jesus to touch the hem of his garment. The fact she wanted to touch the hem of His garment tells us her intent was to humbly bow before Jesus.

But not only did she approach Jesus with a humble spirit. By faith, she approached JESUS in a BELIEVING SPIRIT If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well. This woman not only had the FAITH that JESUS could heal her, she had the faith that He would heal her. 5. This woman s money may have run out...but her FAITH had not! Illustration-----I know you ve all heard this little piece from time time. How appropriately it describes this WOMAN WITH THE BLEEDING DISORDER. MONEY can buy a bed, but not sleep. books, but not brains food, but not an appetite finery, but not beauty a house, but not a home medicine, but not health luxury, but not culture amusements, but not happiness a crucifix, but not a Savior

Thirdly, I would have you to notice... III. THE WOMAN S DELIVERANCE vs. 29-34 -In VERSE 29 we see THE CURE 29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of the affliction. As soon as this woman touched the hem of Jesus garment her bleeding stopped immediately! Can you imagine the sudden overwhelming joy this woman had in her heart? Perhaps those times she went to see a physician they gave her some kind of herbal or natural medicine to take, and she waited for days or weeks or months to see an improvement in her condition, all to no avail. But as soon as she touched the hem of Jesus' garment she was instantly healed. -In VERSES 30-32 we see THE CONCERN 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him, turned around in the crowd and said, Who touched My clothes? 31 But His disciples said to Him, You see the multitude thronging You, and You say, Who touched Me? 32 And He looked around to see her who had done this thing. Even though Jesus is completely surrounded by people, he knew the very moment the power went out of his body into the body of this sick woman. Jesus question had to have seemed odd to the crowd. Who touched My clothes? The crowd was probably thinking, Who didn t touch your clothes? But Jesus wasn t just talking about a casual, incidental touch. He wanted to know who had touched him by FAITH.

-In VERSE 33 we see THE CONFESSION Knowing she had been healed, the woman realized she was the one Jesus was inquiring about. In the same humble spirit that had caused her to touch Jesus, the woman now bows before Jesus and tells him the whole truth. She tells Jesus about her twelve years of dealing with this affliction, and about all the people she sought for help to no avail, and why she came to Him. - In VERSE 34 we see THE COMMENDATION 34 And He said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace, and be healed of your affliction. Jesus always honors believing faith. Because of her FAITH, Jesus now pronounced this woman, Physically, Psychologically, Socially and Spiritually WHOLE! ********************************************************************************* C O N C L U S I O N The lesson we can learn from tonight's message is this: There is an inseparable link between FAITH and HEALING. Every worship service we lift up the names of people who are battling health issues, some of them life-threatening. When we pray for these individuals, we must have the faith that GOD can and will heal them. If we pray without faith, we rob our prayers of power, and we cannot expect to see positive answers to our prayers. Sometimes our prayers hit closer to home. Sometimes it us or one of our own family members who is battling a serious health issue. Like the woman with the issue of blood we must believe with all our heart that we or our loved one will be made well...otherwise our prayers are powerless.

But this brings up another issue. We know that GOD doesn't always grant healing in every situation. What are we to make of this? Does this mean our faith is weak? Not necessarily. Sometimes GOD does not grant the healing we ask for because through the illness GOD may be teaching us or teaching that one we prayed for some valuable lessons. In Psalm 119:71 David writes: It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes. Remember on three different occasions Paul prayed that GOD would take away his thorn-in-the-flesh. But God didn't take away his physical infirmity, did He? Did this mean Paul didn't have enough faith? Not at all! God allowed the infirmity to remain to teach Paul that God's strength is magnified in Paul's weakness. We must understand not all are healed because it is God's ultimate decision to heal or not to heal. We know that God is compassionate and merciful and that nothing is impossible for Him. He has authority over all disease and sickness and can choose to heal whomever He chooses, whenever He chooses. We don't always know all of the answers as to why He heals in some cases, and not in others. We do know though that His ways are higher than ours. Furthermore, we know that even when GOD doesn't grant physical healing here on earth, He will grant eternal healing in heaven... Revelation 21:4: "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."

Is your burden heavy as you bear it all alone? Does the road you travel harvor danger yet unknown? Are you growing weary in the struggle of it all? Jesus will help you when on His name you call. Is the life your living filled with sorrow and despair? Does the future press you, with its worry and its care? Are you tired and friendless, have you almost lost your way? Jesus will help you, just come to him today. He is always there, hearing every prayer, faithful and true. Walking by our side, in His love we hide all the day through. When you get discouraged, just remember what to do, REACH OUT TO JESUS, HE S REACHING OUT TO YOU.
