Rock 905 The monthly newsletter of Rock Lake Presbyterian Church 905 Village Drive, South Charleston, WV 25309 304-768-4141...on this rock I will build my church Matthew 16:18 Rev. Richard W. McGuire 2017 PALM SUNDAY ACTIVITIES 9 th begins with a complimentary breakfast at 9:30 am in the Fellowship Hall, followed by Sunday School for all ages. Palm Sunday worship is in our sanctuary at 11:00. After the service, we will hold our annual Easter Egg Hunt in the courtyard. To be followed by our monthly Pot Luck Luncheon in the parlor. MAUNDY THURSDAY DINNER AND WORSHIP Again this year Maundy Thursday worship will begin with a meal. We will gather in the parlor at 6:30 pm on 13th for dinner followed by Maundy Thursday Worship. This service will include Holy Communion, the sacrament Jesus instituted at his last meal with his disciples. There is no charge for this catered meal. So reservations are needed if you plan to attend. Starting 2, a reservation signup sheet will be on the table next to the parlor doors. Or you can drop a note with your name and the total number of people attending (including you) in one of the offering plates. You can also call the church office, 304-768-4141. Reservations are required on or before noon on Monday, 10 th. Note: While the meal is free for everyone, the actual cost is $10.00 per plate. Donations are in no way expected but will be accepted from anyone who wants to help offset the cost of this event. GOOD FRIDAY WORSHIP EXPERIENCE Christians have traditionally known the Friday before Easter as Good Friday. It is ironic that the day Jesus experienced such a horrific death on the cross would be called Good by Christians. While the events of Good Friday were painful and tragic for Jesus as well as horrible for his followers, in retrospect we know that good came out of that agonizing day. In Jesus scandalous death, he voluntarily paid the price we should pay for our sins. Making it possible for us to receive the forgiveness we need to have the burden of guilt and shame lifted from us through God s forgiveness. What was a terrible experience for Jesus was in fact a good event for us. In our Good Friday service we remember the events of the last day of Jesus life. This year s Good Friday worship will have some unique elements. We hope you will invite your family and friends to worship with you in our sanctuary at 6:30 pm on Friday, 14 th. EASTER SUNDAY AT RLPC We begin Sunday, 16 th with a complimentary BREAKFAST at 9:30 am followed at 10:10 by the FLOWERING OF THE CROSS in the Sanctuary. Our EASTER SUNDAY WORSHIP CELEBRATION begins in the sanctuary at 11:00. Celebrate with us as we again remember the wonders of that first Easter so long ago.

The One Great Hour of Sharing Offering will be taken Easter Sunday, 16th. This offering provides a way for us to share God s love with our neighbors in need. Around the world, people lack access to food, clean water, sanitation, education, and opportunity. Each gift to One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS) serves to help change the lives of people in these challenging situations. It makes a big difference in the world through three impactful programs: Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (Receives 32% of funds raised.), Presbyterian Hunger Program (Receives 36%), and Self- Development (Receives 32%). Today, projects supported by this offering are underway in more than 100 countries. Please, give generously. The Guys Weekend: 4/28 4/30 Standing Together in Christ At Bluestone Camp and Retreat Retreat Cost: $75 Friday Dinner: $8 (for early arrivals) Registration Deadline: 26 Register by 7 and save $5 each! Fees include two nights lodging, three meals Saturday, and one meal on Sunday. Youth are encouraged to attend as long as they are accompanied by an adult. Additional details / registration forms are available in the church narthex and at BluestoneCamp.com/guys-weekend. Men of the Church 6 P.M. 4TH Meet in the church parlor. Food will be brought in from Bob Evans and reservations are requested. If you want to come and haven t been contacted, please call the church office. All men are invited. Question... How many at RLPC would be willing to participate in a Lions International project to help citizens in countries in Africa to get better health? When citizens in Africa get help from health care professionals by providing pills, those pills are given to the receiving persons in their hand. Think of how those pills would look by the time they got home. Lions International (1.4 M members) has started a program of providing plastic medical pill bottles to the health care providers to dispense pills. South Charleston Lions Club is participating and ask RLPC to help us. A container has been placed in the narthex to receive them. Dick Clark will coordinate the program and is available for questions and to pick up the bottles. Thank you for your help. Thanks for the gift cards! They will come in handy. Hunter Robinson Dear Rock Lake Presbyterian Church congregation, Thank you all for the very thoughtful card and the gift card. It was great to hear from you all and it is always good to know that I have the support of my church. It is also great to get to eat something that isn't cafeteria food. Thanks again and I hope to see you all sometime soon. Sincerely, Connor LaCount The inspiring decorative crosses on the double glass doors facing the main parking lot were donated by the Baileys. Thank you Merrily, Ed and Taylor for these thoughtful gifts.

Bridgeview Elementary Nutrition Bags Schedule: 6: Pack: Judy Hardin & Margie Gumowski *Driver Needed! There will be two one-week sessions: July 10-14 and July 17-21 We need your help in order to offer this great free camp to 150 rising first graders through 8th graders. The church provides the facilities and the office administrative costs to the camp and all other expenses are provided by grants or donations This year s camp has a budget of $9,650. So we need a sponsorship for each camper of $65 to meet our budget. We are also applying for other grants and soliciting donations from other sources. Won t you please commit to a sponsorship? All donations are tax deductible. All donations are appreciated. Additional information about the camp will be in each week s bulletin. Visit http.//rocklakeartscamp.wixsite.com/mysite 13: Spring Break No bags needed 20: Pack: Ken & Olga Schmidt Drivers: George & Judy Powers 27: Pack: Jo Clark & Clara Means *Driver Needed! Thank you to all who have donated time to pack bags and drive to Bridgeview! *Please contact DeeDee Means to volunteer If you are looking for a daily devotional booklet or daily email, here are a few suggestions: *RLPC offers These Days-Daily Devotions for Living by Faith in regular and large print found in the Narthex. *The Upper Room Daily Devotional Guide via email is available free at devotional.upperroom.org. An audio version (mp3) is also available via the Upper Room bookstore. There is a $3.99/month fee for the audio version. The website actually has a variety of devotional books. *Another source is a little book called JESUS CALLING, Devotions for Every Day of The Year, Enjoying Peace in His Presence by Sarah Young. JESUS CALLING offers a unique perspective of writing from Jesus point of view as if Jesus is speaking to you. *Another suggestion I received is Henri J. Nouwen's book Bread For The Journey, A Daybook of Wisdom and Faith. "It is a daily feast of fresh insight into the challenges and deep joys for a life lived in close communion with God." It is available from Cokesbury, as well as Amazon. *There are even daily devotional books available that contain the writings of C.S. Lewis such as, A Year with Aslan: Daily Reflections from The Chronicles of Narnia. There are many sources of daily devotions. I hope you find the one that is right for you.
