MINISTRY NEWS A PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT O Holy Spirit. Make my heart a shrine for the words of eternal life. Keep from me the tumult of the busy world, And bid desires be still. Create a holy silence in my heart, That I may hear the voice of the Eternal. O Holy Spirit Make my heart a dwelling place for the Lord of my life. I need Him, not just as one who visits me, But as one who abides in my heart and never leaves it. O Holy Spirit Make my heart a chamber for prayer. Help me to worship God With words and wordlessly, day and night, So that His praise is ever on my lips Till I am wholly sanctified. ORTHODOX BIBLE BLAST 2013-2014 One of our goals at St Sophia Cathedral this liturgical year is to get a copy of the Orthodox Study Bible into the hands of every single member of our community. SPECIAL LOW PRICE of $27.50. The St Sophia Bookstore has stocked up on Orthodox Study Bibles and for a short time only we are offering them at below cost for your benefit. Benefactors who want to help students in need may sponsor 10 Bibles for $275. Benefactors will be recognized in the weekly bulletin for their generosity. Just send a check to the church and write Bible Blast in the memo or call the office to make a gift over the phone. 5

HYMNS OF THE DAY RESURRECTION APOLYTIKION The Word eternal with the Father and the Spirit, born of the Virgin for our salvation, let us believers praise and worship; for he was pleased to go up on the Cross in His flesh, to endure death and raise the dead, by his glorious resurrection. APOLYTIKION OF ST. GREGORY KYRIAKOS You proved to be a citizen of the desert, an angel in the flesh, and a wonderworker, O Kyriacus, our God-bearing Father. By fasting, vigil, and prayer you obtained heavenly gifts, and you healed the sick and the souls of them that have recourse to you with faith. Glory to Him who has given you strength. Glory to Him who has crowned you. Glory to Him who works healings for all through you. TROPARION OF SAINT SOPHIA (GOD S HOLY WISDOM) Blessed are You O Christ our God, Who as all wise the fishermen You showed forth; By sending Your Holy Spirit down upon them and through them the universe You drew unto Your net. O lover of mankind Glory to You. KONTAKION Protector of Christians, champion undefeated, mediator most sure with our Creator, disregard not the voice of the prayers of sinners, but come quickly in your goodness, to help us who cry out to you with faith: Be swift to intercede, make haste to supplicate, O Theotokos, protector always of those who honor you. 6

EPISTLE READING Priest: Let Us Attend Reader: You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us Save me, O Lord, the godly man has failed. Priest: Wisdom... Reader: The Reading is from St. Paul's 2nd Letter to the Corinthians (1:21-24;2:1-4) Priest: Let us be Attentive BRETHREN, it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has commissioned us; he has put his seal upon us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee. But I call God to witness against me - it was to spare you that I refrained from coming to Corinth. Not that we lord it over your faith; we work with you for your joy, for you stand firm in your faith. For I made up my mind not to make you another painful visit. For if I cause you pain, who is there to make me glad but the one whom I have pained? And I wrote as I did, so that when I came I might not suffer pain from those who should have made me rejoice, for I felt sure of all of you, that my joy would be the joy of you all. For I wrote you out of much affliction and anguish of heart and with many tears, not to cause you pain but to let you know the abundant love that I have for you. 8

GOSPEL READING The Reading is from The Gospel of St. Luke (6:31-36) The Lord said, "And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful." 9

PHILOPTOHOS NEWS The year is off to an energetic start with many projects. Hopefully one or more of these projects will interest you! Our meetings are open to anyone who would like to hear more about what we do. If you have not been to a meeting we would love to meet you. AN EVENING WITH FRIENDS DINNER honoring James (Jim) Demetriou, Anthony (Tony) Demetriou and Andrew (Andy) Evangelatos will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2014 in the Maniatakos Hall. Chairman Marianna Politis and her committee are already making plans for this spectacular evening. Please mark your calendars to join us! PHILOPTOHOS GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING ON SUNDAY, OCT 20. Our speaker will be our own Dr. Collin Cooper, speaking about vaccinations, the flu season, medications, etc. He can answer your questions regarding shingles, pneumonia vaccines, flu shots, interactions with medicines you may be taking, and how to take care of yourself and your family if you do get the flu. Come and listen to this very informative and important presentation as we are now in the flu season with the holidays approaching! BLANKETS FOR THE SHELTER: This winter we are asking for donations of new blankets for women and children in the Domestic Violence Agency safe houses. Blankets can be small such as crib size blankets or throw size blankets - they do not need to be large. If you knit - sew - or shop - this is for you! As we approach the holidays we should remember these women and their children who are hiding from abusive husbands, fathers and boyfriends. They are unable to leave the safe house and be with their families for the holidays. It is such a lonely and difficult time for them. We tend to forget that babies and children are in the houses with their mothers. It would be wonderful if we could send nice, soft, new blankets to the agency for distribution. If you wish to bring a donation to church or to a Philoptohos meeting, the blankets will be delivered before Christmas to the agency. THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON: Our Thanksgiving luncheon will be Sunday, November 17th at 12:30 p.m. in the Maniatakos Pavilion. Reservation forms are in the Herald. Be sure to send in your reservation ahead of time. Philoptohos must continue to reach out and do the work of our Lord. The poor, the destitute, the hungry, the aged, the sick, the unemployed, the orphaned, those who may need assistance. For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me John 12:8. With love in Christ s service, Virginia Noyes and The Philoptohos Board of Directors 10
