THE SERVICE FOR EASTER SUNDAY 8:00 a.m. Sunday, April 5, 2015 WE GATHER IN GOD S NAME Let all enter the sanctuary in a spirit of prayer. Please remember to turn cell phones and pagers to silent for worship. Where you see an asterisk (*) please stand if you are able. Words in bold are read by the congregation. FOR MEDITATION BEFORE WORSHIP (for personal use before worship) We sing because we know there is another way to run the world, a world where death is not the final word, where despair is not the winner, where human power and hierarchies are not thought to be inevitable and unchangeable. John Holbert PRELUDE Chorale Jongen WORDS OF WELCOME LIGHTING THE CHRIST CANDLE Christ is risen. Christ is risen indeed! Alleluia! Christ is risen and the Lord is here. Christ is risen and the Spirit is with us. Alleluia! Christ is risen. God has worked wonders. Christ is risen in glory and power forever. Alleluia! Whenever we light this candle, we proclaim: Christ is the light of the world and the center of our lives. Alleluia! INTROIT Easter Alleluia arr JRG PRAYER FOR SUNDAY MORNING May God be with you. And also with you. Love divine, in raising Christ to new life you opened the path of salvation to all peoples. Send us out, with the joy of Mary Magdalene, to proclaim that we, too, have seen the Lord, so that the world may celebrate with you the banquet of your peace. Amen. i

* HYMN 248 Christ Is Risen! Shout Hosanna! Hymn to Joy 1. Christ is risen! Shout Hosanna! Celebrate this day of days! Christ is risen! Hush in wonder: all creation is amazed. In the desert all-surrounding, see, a spreading tree has grown. Healing leaves of grace abounding bring a taste of love unknown. 2. Christ is risen! Raise your spirits from the caverns of despair. Walk with gladness in the morning. See what love can do and dare. Drink the wine of resurrection, not a servant, but a friend. Jesus is our strong companion. Joy and peace shall never end. 3. Christ is risen! Earth and heaven nevermore shall be the same. Break the bread of new creation where the world is still in pain. Tell its grim, demonic chorus: Christ is risen! Get you gone! God the First and Last is with us. Sing Hosanna everyone! CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Holy God, Maker of all: Have mercy on us. Jesus Christ, servant of the poor: Have mercy on us. Holy Spirit, Breath of life: Have mercy on us. Faithful, just and loving God, we confess that we are captive to doubt and fear, bound by the ways that lead to death. We have not loved you with all our heart and soul and mind and strength. And we have not loved our neighbor as you first loved us. Forgive us, God of compassionate mercy. Let your Spirit work in us and among us to change our lives and make us new, that we may know that abundant life given in Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. (We continue in silent, personal prayer ) ASSURANCE OF GRACE ii

* RESPONSE OF PRAISE 239 (singing together) Good Christians All, Rejoice and Sing! 1 & 3 1. Good Christians all, rejoice and sing! Now is the triumph of our King! To all the world glad news we bring: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! 3. Praise we in songs of victory that love, that life which cannot die, and sing with hearts uplifted high: Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! * SHARING THE PEACE May the peace of the Child of Peace be with you all. And also with you. * WELCOMING ONE ANOTHER We greet each other with signs of peace and reconciliation. A touch on the shoulder, a nod, a bow can be a substitute for handshakes to hinder the spread of the flu. * RESPONSE 587 (singing together) Celtic Alleluia Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION FIRST LESSON Isaiah 25:6-9 (page 568, Pew Bible) WE HEAR GOD S WORD The Word of God for the People of God Thanks be to God. SECOND LESSON John 20:1-18 (page 882, Pew Bible) The Word of God for the People of God Thanks be to God. CHORAL ACCLAMATION Be Not Afraid Taizé SERMON First Light Dr. Morton Harris iii

WE RESPOND TO GOD S WORD AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (together) This is the good news which we have received, in which we stand, and by which we are saved, if we hold it fast: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day, and that he appeared first to the women, then to Peter, and to the Twelve, and then to many faithful witnesses. We believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus Christ is the first and the last, the beginning and the end; Christ is our Lord and our God. Amen. PRAYERS OF GRATITUDE AND CONCERN Creator of the universe, you made the world in beauty and restore all things through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. We pray that, where your image is still disfigured by poverty, sickness, selfishness, warfare and greed, the new creation in Jesus Christ may appear in justice, love and peace, to the glory of your name. Amen. THE OFFERING OFFERTORY ANTHEM Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem Words: Fulbert of Chartres (752-1028) Music: C.V. Stanford (1852-1924) Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, your sweetest notes employ, The Paschal victory to hymn in strains of holy joy. For Judah s Lion breaks his chains, crushing the serpent s head; And cries aloud through earth s domains to wake the imprison d dead. Devouring depths of hell their prey at his command restore; His ransomed hosts pursue their way where Jesus goes before. Triumphant in his glory now to him all power is given; To him in one communion bow all saints in earth and heaven While we, his soldiers, praise our King, his mercy we implore, Within his palace bright to bring and keep us evermore. Ye choirs of new Jerusalem, your sweetest notes employ, The Paschal victory to hymn in strains of holy joy. All glory to the Father be, all glory to the Son, All glory to the Holy Ghost, to Thee, while endless ages run. Alleluia! iv

THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER Invitation to the Table * Communion Hymn 505 The Trumpets Sound, the Angels Sing The Feast Is Ready 1. The trumpets sound; the angels sing; the feast is ready to begin. The gates of heaven are open wide, and Jesus welcomes you inside. Sing with thankfulness songs of pure delight. Come and revel in heaven s love and light. Take your place at the table of the King. The feast is ready to begin; the feast is ready to begin. 2. Tables are laden with good things; O taste the peace and joy he brings. He ll fill you up with love divine; he ll turn your water into wine. Sing with thankfulness songs of pure delight. Come and revel in heaven s love and light. Take your place at the table of the King. The feast is ready to begin; the feast is ready to begin. 3. The hungry heart he satisfies, offers the poor his paradise. Now hear all heaven and earth applaud the amazing goodness of the Lord. Sing with thankfulness songs of pure delight. Come and revel in heaven s love and light. Take your place at the table of the King. The feast is ready to begin; the feast is ready to begin. The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving Christ is risen! Christ is risen indeed! People of God, open your hearts. We open our hearts to Christ, who reigns in glory. Let us give thanks to the living God. We thank God with joy. [Blessed are you O Lord our God. You breathed life into the void and showed yourself as the one who loves in freedom in unity with all the friends of Christ, who yearn for your will to be done on earth, we praise your name. And this is our song:] Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of justice and love, your compassion enfolds the earth. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the One who comes in your holy name. Hosanna in the highest: O God, come to save. v

[The pastors continue to lead us in prayer. We gather up all our prayers, spoken and unspoken, as we pray together:] Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. Breaking the Bread The Communion of the People We will receive communion this morning by passing the bread and the cup to one another in the pew. Gluten-free bread is in the center of the bread tray. The outer circle is white grape juice; the inner circles are red wine. Our tradition is to eat the bread as it comes to you, and then to hold the cup so we may commune together. Prayer after Communion THIS WEEK AT FIRST PRESBYTERIAN WE GO FORTH TO SERVE * HYMN 232 Jesus Christ Is Risen Today Easter Hymn 1. Jesus Christ is risen today, Alleluia! our triumphant holy day, Alleluia! who did once upon the cross, Alleluia! suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia! 2. Hymns of praise then let us sing, Alleluia! unto Christ, our heavenly King, Alleluia! who endured the cross and grave, Alleluia! sinners to redeem and save. Alleluia! 3. But the pains which he endured, Alleluia! our salvation have procured. Alleluia! Now above the sky he's King, Alleluia! where the angels ever sing. Alleluia! 4. Sing we to our God above, Alleluia! praise eternal as God's love. Alleluia! Praise our God, ye heavenly host, Alleluia! Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Alleluia! vi
