Volume 32 Issue 9 Pastor Jenny s Ponderings: Give Thanks! As I begin writing this article, I'm sitting in my office after a prayer service we held in our Great Hall. From my office, through the cracked-open door that separates the office suite hallway from the Great Hall, I can hear the remaining guests sharing stories with the family as they linger...all of them holding onto a night of giving thanks for their departed loved one. I will go back out there in a few minutes to offer my own final words of good night before the family heads home for the evening; for now, it's a blessing to hear the muffled conversation from a distance a blessing to know McCabe was and is a place of warmth and joy even in the midst of death and grief. By the time you receive this newsletter, we may have already celebrated All Saints in worship November 1st and 2nd. By the time you receive this newsletter, you will likely also have received in the mail a postcard informing you of our Fall Stewardship time. Though there will not be a specific preaching or worship emphasis on Stewardship (save for our Consecration weekend November 22nd and 23rd), this month will truly be a time of giving thanks to God for all we have been given in this life. Our sermon series on The Ten Commandments will continue the first three weekends of November, but, in addition to that, it is so fitting that our time of overall focus on Stewardship will have been kicked-off with All Saints a time of giving thanks to God for the saints in our lives, the beloved departed who have gone on into eternity before us. I hope you will be in worship with us as often as possible throughout November as we explore God's law and God's grace through the Ten Commandments. I also hope you will be with us because each week of November, we'll have in the bulletin a brief testimonial from a McCabe person, couple, or family. In these testimonials, the writers will be sharing a bit of the story behind why they choose to give back to God through McCabe. I'm so excited to read what these folks will be writing and I trust their words will inspire each of us to grow in the giving of our time, talent, and treasure...and that, through our worship and study, we will be ever more thankful for all of God's many gifts. Peace in Christ, Pastor Jenny Hallenbeck

Wholly Healthy Greetings McCabe friends, I do hope you have been enjoying our summer in autumn. The beauty of the season has been a breathtaking treat! God is good!! Unfortunately, I have to ask you to UNMARK your calendars! The flu shot clinics that are scheduled for November 9 th and 10 th are cancelled due to a vaccine production issue. Sanford Health Systems has so graciously provided the parish nurses with flu vaccine each year but this year we will not receive our supply due to a production issue. I apologize for this inconvenience. Please contact your personal physician, pharmacy or City Nursing to receive your vaccine. Continue to use good hand washing skills and really try to keep your hands away from your face to reduce the risk of getting the flu. If you have questions regarding the flu vaccine or other concerns, please contact me through the church office at 255-1160. Have a blessed Thanksgiving! Let us be thankful for our many blessings and be a blessing to all. God bless, Nurse Jane P.S. Most of us don t realize how much we have to be thankful for until we have to pay taxes on it! Upper Room Devotional Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. - 1 Peter 4:10 (NRSV) My friend told me about an incident from her youth. One day someone brought her a piece of beautiful material from abroad at a time when a shortage in our country made it impossible to find such cloth for sale. My friend immediately sewed herself a fashionable dress. But she was reluctant to wear it because she felt that such a dress would make her stand out too much. Time passed. She moved the dress from shelf to shelf but never wore it. Hidden from people s eyes for many years, it never served its owner. This story reminded me of the biblical parable about the talents. One man s talent was not put to good use and brought no benefit to its owner. (See Matt. 25:14-30.) The same is true of our talents, gifts, and potential. If we save up our talents and put them away for future possibilities, they are useless however precious and valuable they may be. Instead, when we use our talents, God multiplies their benefit to us and to those we seek to serve. Irina Ivanova (Pskov, Russia) Thought for the Day: Our talents are meant to be used to serve our neighbors. Prayer: Dear Lord, you have generously blessed each of us with a special gift or talent. Help us to put our talents to use in serving you and the world. Amen. Prayer Focus: Those seeking ways to serve. Thank You, McCabe Thank you to McCabe s J.A.M. for your generous donation of activity bags to the Children s Hospital to help make the kid s stay a little better! Sanford Children s Hospital Thank you for your contribution to the Ruth Meiers Hospitality House. Through your generosity, we are committed to providing essential services to those who need a warm meal, comfortable bed or hot shower. Jaclyn Bugbee, Executive Director 2 Servant Opportunities Current servant lists are posted every week on the wall next to room E-7 (Serving Ministries office - Mid Level of the education wing, across the hall from the Family Ministries office.) If the list you are looking for is not there, leave a note or contact Jan Joersz, 255-1160 or jjoersz@mccabeumc.com, and let her know where you would like to serve. Ushers and Greeters are always needed each month. Come check it out!

Small farmers can stay on their own land and get a fairly traded price for their product, while feeding their family. The Coop processes the product, thereby keeping costs low for the farmer. You can help this mission project also by purchasing products from the coffee, tea and chocolate counter in the Great Hall. Gift baskets can be made by request. Let me know if there is anything you are interested in seeing. Contact Selma at 471-0712 to order gift baskets or for any questions. Fran Manolovitz & family on the death of her sister, Clara J. Rasmussen, Regan, ND, October 26, 2014. Congratulations to: Erik & Anna Sjursen on the birth of their daughter, Nadia Christine, Bismarck, ND, October 9, 2014. Proud grandpa is Phil Sjursen. Funds for Students Student Assistance Grants are made available to postsecondary individuals to be used in college, university, vocational or technical programs. The Committee is now accepting applications until December 1, 2014 for the 2015 spring semester. If you wish to apply, contact the church office for an application form. To Address Security & Safety Concerns McCabe UMC is implementing new electronic locks for both of our south entrances and for our west entrance. In the coming weeks these new locks will be fully installed and any existing keys will no longer work. The new electronic locks will help us better secure the church building throughout the week, while still allowing appropriate access for staff, members, friends, and newcomers. Those who require the ability to unlock these doors will be issued key cards in the near future. We appreciate your patience and prayers as we implement this new system. Stay tuned for more information when the new locks are up and running! Precepts Bible Our last class for the season will be Thursday, November 13 at 9:30 a.m. We will resume class in February, studying the book of Luke. More details in the January 2015 Newsletter. Did You Know? The monthly Messenger along with a calendar of events is on line at www.mccabeumc.com. You can also get a printed or audio copy of each week s sermon and your daily devotional material on the church website. Please consider receiving notices including the Messenger by email to help with ever increasing postage costs. 5 Hanging of the Greens Preparation Saturday, November 29 Preparation for the Hanging of the Greens service will be on Saturday, November 29 beginning at 9:00 a.m. Your help is needed to fluff garland, straighten bows, and organize decorations.
