Word of Life Intercessions for Life September 4, 2011 From Deacon Walter Yoshimitsu, Chancellor September 4th Twenty- Third Sunday in Ordinary Time For those who do not support the Gospel of Life: that by our example and prayers they may come to see the beauty of all life; We pray to the Lord: Bulletin Brief One need only consider the harm to our society and culture when science, technology and medicine proceed without respect for the innate and inalienable dignity of human life. A culture of death, sown by totalitarian regimes in the last century, is also sown in democratic societies when freedom s dependence on truth is denied. ~ Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades, Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Message to Graduates, May 11, 2011. Liturgical Resources for September 11 Submitted by Fr. William Kunisch, Office of Worship This year, September 11 falls on a Sunday. It is also the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on New York, The Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. While the Prayers and Readings should be for the 24 th Sunday in Ordinary Time, it would be appropriate to acknowledge this anniversary in the General Intercessions and the Homily. The appointed Readings are especially fitting for this day. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops also has some liturgical resources for the commemoration of 9/11available on their website: http://www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/september-11/. 4

Children in Need of Love, Comfort and Home From Danny Morishige, Catholic Charities Hawaii The following teenage boys represent an opportunity. An opportunity for those within our community with discerning hearts to know and love and serve God s plan; thereby spreading the grace of God to these distressed young people. Alex is a 15 year old male of Hawaiian, Chinese, Korean, and Portuguese ALEX ancestry. He is in the 9 th grade. He enjoys playing football, drawing, going to the beach, and spending time with friends. Alex describes himself as athletic. He does not have any favorite subjects in school. He is not religious and is not close to his family. He would prefer a two parent family that is active. He does not mind having other children or animals. He would prefer to live in the Leeward or North Shore areas. His parents rights have been terminated and under the custody of the Department of Human Services. ISAAC Isaac is a 16 year old male of Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean and Portuguese and African American ancestry. He enjoys playing music, singing and writing songs. He likes school and his favorite subject is English. He enjoys reading. Isaac loves to surf, playing different sports, playing on the computer and spending time with friends. Isaac is the oldest and is tired of taking care of younger children. He would prefer to have no younger children in the home or be the only child. He does not mind going to church and church related activities. He is looking for a permanent family so he does not have to move again and who would support and assistance him in obtaining his goals. He wants to go to college and work towards helping others. The Department of Human Services has permanent custody. If you are interested in knowing more about Alex, Isaac or Kimo, please call Danny Morishige at 527-4970. LIFE ISSUES FORUM - Selective Reduction: A Morality Tale From the Respect Life Office A recent cover story in The New York Times Magazine explores the ethical dilemma parents and doctors face when fertility treatments produce two or three children and parents desire only one (Ruth Padawer, The Two-Minus-One Pregnancy, Aug. 14, 2011). The most curious aspect of the 5,000-word article is what the Times did not deem fit to print. But before we discuss what s missing, readers may be interested to learn some little-known facts about the $3 billion fertility industry. 12

The great majority of children created through in vitro fertilization (IVF) end up dead, either before implantation or before full-term birth. To achieve a plausible success rate, IVF technicians fertilize several eggs (and often fertilize many) at the same time. While some of the resulting embryos are transferred to the uterus, many die or are discarded immediately. Others may be frozen for later attempts, but many will not survive the thawing process. Fifty percent of the babies conceived by IVF who do survive are part of a multiples pregnancy because doctors, trying to ensure that at least one baby survives, have transferred several embryos to the womb at once. What to do when only one child is desired, but twins or triplets continue to thrive at 12-14 weeks gestation? Some doctors offer parents selective reduction, aborting all but one of the babies for reasons that are social, not medical. Others refuse to act as such hired guns. The article goes into great length describing the intentions and motivations of mothers who want to reduce the pregnancy to one child and the circumstances that they believe support their decision: twins would take up all their time, leaving nothing for their older children; one mother didn t want to juggle two newborns or two screaming infants while her husband was deployed; others don t want to be worrying about two tempestuous teenagers or two college-tuition bills when they reach their 60s; and most revealingly, the pregnancy was all so consumerish to begin with, and this became yet another thing we could control. The author gives some odd reasons why terminating half a twin pregnancy seems more controversial than aborting a single fetus, but two parents hint at the real dilemma: They want to be able to deny that a human life is being deliberately taken, yet the child who is allowed to be born will remain a permanent witness to the humanity of the child who was killed. The missing piece? The article never mentions a decisive factor in determining whether a selective reduction is morally wrong: Objectively, what is the doctor doing and what is he deliberately aiming at? With the parents consent or urging, he is injecting a needle containing a fatal dose of potassium chloride into the heart of an unborn child. Clearly, his moral object is to kill an unwanted innocent and helpless child. The best intentions and the most compelling circumstances cannot change an intrinsically evil act into one that is morally right. Clearly, such an object contradicts love of neighbor as well as love of God, and therefore counts among the kinds of actions that Catholic morality sees as intrinsically evil. There is no real dilemma here, once we understand what abortion (including reduction ) really entails. Part of the evil practiced by the IVF industry is to desensitize parents into losing sight of this. Spirit-Led Drama Club From Deacon Modesto Cordero, Adult Faith Formation Coordinator Great news from St. John Apostle & Evangelist (SJAE) Church (Mililani) Adult Faith Formation department... in an effort to provide an innovative and creative adult faith formation program in our parish, we are launching a new ministry this weekend - the SJAE "Spirit-Led" Drama Club. The vision of our new ministry is not simply to "put on plays and skits", but to use drama as an instrument to God's Glory and to bring others to Him. We believe that Christian Drama has a major role to play in spreading the Word of God. Christian drama provides ways for each and every of us, regardless of our talents (or perceived lack thereof), to get out of our pews and get involved in the evangelization process. We invite you to check our program and to see if this is a ministry you would like to bring to your own parish. From Fr. Manny Hewe, Vicar for Clergy Key Dates for our Priests: 15
