Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church The Lantern MARCH 2013 I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of the life. John 8:12 Greetings from the Pastor, Out of Death to Life Lent will draw to a close on the last Sunday of March. We can all hope that winter will end as well. The winter season like all seasons can be full of surprises. Sudden storms are always a prospect. Life, too, has its seasons, and Lent perhaps more than others can reflect its harshness. Holy week which precedes the Resurrection celebration takes us on just such a journey. From Palm/Passion Sunday we journey from the celebrative moment when Jesus enters Jerusalem, to the final moments with his disciples in the upper room on Maundy Thursday, to the agony of Good Friday. But all of this leads us to the joy of Resurrection. The celebration is one of renewed life through Christ. Plan to make this journey with us as we gather at 7:30 on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, and celebrate the Resurrection of Our Lord, at the festival service of Easter Day. Eagerly awaiting that day, Pastor McKinley IN THIS ISSUE: Pg. 2 Dates, News, Flowers Pg. 3 Sign, Council, LCW Pg. 4 Hymn Devotion Pg. 5 March Calendar Pg. 6 Birthdays & Worship Assistants Pg. 7 Spec. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 am by the same team that provided the Mardi Gras pancake supper. A sign up sheet is in the Narthex, plan now to attend. Rev. ROXANNE ROSSANO/CHURCH SECRETARY CHURCH FLOWERS WE HAVE ADJUSTED THE COSTS AND PROCEDURE FOR FLOWERS FOR THE ALTAR, AND COLUMBARIUM. Altar flowers are $20; reduced from $30. This is for both vases. We are now adding a cost for the two small vases which are usually placed on the organ and piano. They are going to be $15 for both vases. The columbarium flowers will remain at $30, and will also include a vase. We will also be accepting any amount in general, which will be place in a separate fund used to purchase flowers for weeks when no one has donated. If you would like to donate flowers for the altar, organ, or columbarium, the full price must be paid. You must also sign up on the flower chart in the hallway, and fill out a donation card in the envelope next to the chart, and payment must be received prior to the specified week. You have the option to take the flowers home, or to leave them and they will be kept at the altar until their life has been spent, or until the following week where someone has donated flowers. 2

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE FOLLOWING ELECTED 2013 COUNCIL MEMBERS: SIGN FUNDRAISER! We need to repair our sign that messages have been missed so much by all. Our first project is a loose change collection. Each family can pick up a change collection box in the narthex. Each week bring back container and empty in a general collection container so we can watch the coins grow. Also, you can return container on Easter Sunday or anytime thereafter. In addition a one time donation can be put in an envelop in narthex and the donation will be recorded for tax purposes. Our goal is about $5000 to get a decent lighted tamper proof sign. In two weeks we have reached the $2,000 mark. Let's make the sign be a dream come true. LCW (Lutheran Church Women) Bottle of red, bottle of white, come take part at the LCW meeting on Wednesday night. Our first meeting will be on March 20 th at 6:30 p.m. Share a few crackers and some cheese with the ladies of the church. All are welcome, you don t even have to be a member, bring a friend or two it you would like. We will enjoy some fellowship and make some plans for 2013. Let your voices be heard. Bring new ideas and plans for what the Ladies can do for Immanuel, its members and our community. 3 This will be a planning meeting and you are definitely needed. We know that some of you can not attend every meeting and that is okay. Come on Wednesday, March 20 and make a difference. Let us meet, greet, eat, and plan ourselves into a vital part of this church.

Hymn Devotion for March Ah, Holy Jesus Ah, holy Jesus, how hast thou offended, that we to judge thee have in hate pretended? By foes derided, by thine own rejected, O most afflicted! Who was the guilty? Who brought this upon thee? Alas, my treason, Jesus, hath undone thee! 'Twas I, Lord Jesus, I it was denied thee; I crucified thee. Lo, the Good Shepherd for the sheep is offered; the slave hath sinned, and the Son hath suffered. For our atonement, while we nothing heeded, God interceded. For me, kind Jesus, was thy incarnation, thy mortal sorrow, and thy life's oblation; thy death of anguish and thy bitter passion, for my salvation. Therefore, kind Jesus, since I cannot pay thee, I do adore thee, and will ever pray thee, think on thy pity and thy love unswerving, not my deserving. Johann Heermann (1585 1547) Translated by Robert Seymour Bridges (1844 1930) We have all asked, Why is this happening to me? John Heermann could have asked this question with just cause. In 1611, he became the Lutheran pastor in Köben, Germany, and during his years there, the village suffered numerous disasters. During the Thirty Years War, plunder by both Catholic and Protestant armies and devastation by fire and plague decimated the popluation. More than once, Heermann narrowly escaped with his life, and several times he lost everything he owned. During these years of horror, he turned to hymnwriting for consolation, especially after throat trouble forced him to stop preaching. Heermann drew inspiration for this hymn from a Latin text attributed variously to Augustine (354-430) and Jean de Fécamp (c. 1000-1079). But, his years of personal suffering injected the hymn with a genuine depth and clarity. As we look toward the Cross this Easter season, we might well ask, Why did Jesus have to suffer? This hymn pronounces the simple answer: For me He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. What will it be like for our children and grandchildren? Why do we go to church? Why do we not? Phyllis Tickle helps us to understand the future of our church by looking at the past and the present. There is a ten minute video, study guides, and a wealth of information provided through discussion. When you come and share your ideas, we all benefit! And you may leave with new ideas from others and the joy of fellowship. There s food for provided for the body and soul. NEW BULLETINS! As you have noticed, we now have a worship bulletin. Henceforth, they will be known as worship folders. These new folders will be printed out seasonally (Lent, Easter, Summer, Autumn, Advent, etc.). By doing this, we will be cutting back on paper and copying costs. Ordinarily, we would print out 100-120 bulletins per week including our Saturday evening service. Also, it will make our worship experience much easier for visitors, and for yourselves. They will be handed out each week by the ushers as we have always done. After the service, there will be basket(s) in the narthex as you leave the sanctuary where you can return your worship folder. Any inserts and announcements will be placed inside the Celebrate, which you may take home. 7
