Lift High the Cross Holy Cross Sunday September 13 & 14, 2014

Ebenezer Lutheran Church Port Hudson The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod 9100 Highway YY Leslie, Missouri Parsonage 573-459-6432 Church 573-459-6431 Rev. William F. Zastrow, Pastor Mary Sprick, Secretary ebenezerlutheran@hotmail.com ebenezerlutheranchurch.wordpress.com AS WE GATHER: Holy Cross Day has been celebrated since September 14, 335AD, the date on which the Church of the Holy Sepulcher was dedicated. Unlike the somberness as we remember the cross on Good Friday, Holy Cross Day is much more celebratory and emphasizes the victory over sin, death, and Satan that was accomplished once and for all when Jesus was lifted up on the cross. While the world largely still sees the cross of Christ as a stumbling block or as folly, today is the day we celebrate the cross of Christ as the power of God and the wisdom of God. In the cross, the power of sin in our lives is overcome by the self-sacrificing love of God in Jesus. In the cross we witness the fulfillment of God s promise to redeem the world the wisdom of His plan of salvation. All of this is for us! So today we lift high the cross! PRAYER BEFORE WORSHIP: God our Father, You show Your glory in strange and mysterious ways, chief of which is by the death of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, on the cross. Help us to see in the cross of Jesus the redemption of our lives and hope for us and all sinners that our lives may reflect Christ s self-sacrificing love; who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. DIVINE SERVICE HYMN Lift High the Cross LW 311 2

INVOCATION In the name of the father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen. OPENING SENTENCES Psalm 40:4, 5 Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! You have multiplied, O LORD my God, Your wondrous deeds and Your thoughts toward us; none can compare with You! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Psalm 40:11 13 As for You, O LORD, You will not restrain Your mercy from me; Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness will ever preserve me! For evils have encompassed me beyond number; my iniquities have overtaken me, and I cannot see; they are more than the hairs of my head; my heart fails me. Be pleased, O LORD, to deliver me! O LORD, make haste to help me! Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all 3

your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen PSALM Psalm 40:1 11 I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD. Blessed is the man who makes the LORD his trust, who does not turn to the proud, to those who go astray after a lie! You have multiplied, O LORD my God, Your wondrous deeds and Your thoughts toward us; none can compare with You! I will proclaim and tell of them, yet they are more than can be told. In sacrifice and offering You have not delighted, but You have given me an open ear. Burnt offering and sin offering You have not required. Then I said, Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me: I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart. I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; 4

behold, I have not restrained my lips, as You know, O LORD. I have not hidden Your deliverance within my heart; I have spoken of Your faithfulness and Your salvation; I have not concealed Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness from the great congregation. As for You, O LORD, You will not restrain Your mercy from me; Your steadfast love and Your faithfulness will ever preserve me! KYRIE From a place of peace, we pray for mercy. Lord, have mercy. Upon us, our loved ones, and all who are far from God. Lord, have mercy. Upon the preaching of the cross of Christ to every creature. Lord, have mercy. Help, save, and deliver all who cry to You for help, good Lord. Amen. HYMN OF PRAISE This is the Feast Refrain: This is the feast of victory for our God. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! 5

Worthy is Christ, the Lamb who was slain, Whose blood set us free to be people of God? (Refrain) Power, riches and wisdom and strength, And honor and blessing and glory are his. (Refrain) Sing with all the people of God And join in the hymn of all creation. Blessing and honor and glory and might Be to God and the Lamb forever. Amen. (Refrain) For the Lamb who was slain has begun his reign. Alleluia. (Refrain) SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. PRAYER OF THE DAY Merciful God, Your Son, Jesus Christ, was lifted high upon the cross that He might bear the sins of the world and draw all people to Himself. Grant that we who glory in His death for our redemption may faithfully heed His call to bear the cross and follow Him, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Numbers 21:4 9 (The Bronze Serpent) 6

This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. HYMN When I Survey the Wondrous Cross LW 115 1. When I survey the wondrous cross On which the Prince of glory died, My richest gain I count but loss And pour contempt on all my pride. 2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast Save in the death of Christ, my God; All the vain things that harm me most, I sacrifice them to His blood. 3. See, from His head, His hands, His feet, Sorrow and love flow mingled down. Did e'er such love and sorrow meet Or thorns compose so rich a crown? 4. Were the whole realm of nature mine That were a tribute far too small; Love so amazing, so divine, Demands my soul, my life, my all. EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 1:18 25 (The Foolishness of the Cross) This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GRADUAL Isaiah 49:22a; John 3:14b 15 Behold, I will lift up My hand to the nations, 7

Lord. life. and raise My signal to the peoples, says the So must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal HOLY GOSPEL John 12:20 33 (The Son of Man Must be Lifted Up) The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. (The Gospel is read.) This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. THE APOSTEL S CREED All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of 8

sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. HYMN OF THE DAY In the Cross of Christ I Glory LW 101 SERMON CATECHISM Luther s Explanation of the Second Article All: I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from all eternity, and also true man, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity. This is most certainly true. OFFERING OFFERTORY LW page 175 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me, Cast me not away from Thy presence; and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit. Amen THE PRAYERS OF THE CHURCH 9

LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. HYMN Drawn to the Cross, Which Thou Hast Blessed LW 356 1. Drawn to the Cross, which Thou hast blest With healing gifts for souls distrest, To find in Thee my life, my rest, Christ Crucified, I come. 2. Thou knowest all my griefs and fears, Thy grace abused, my misspent years; Yet now to Thee with contrite tears, Christ Crucified, I come. THE CLOSING COLLECT Let us pray. O God, our Father, in this Divine Service, we again have received the forgiveness of our sins won for us by the cross of Jesus. Empower us by the Holy Spirit to take up our cross and follow our Lord Jesus Christ in giving our lives for the sake of others. We pray this in the name of our crucified and risen Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen. 10

THE BENEDICTION The word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 1 Corinthians 1:18 The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The LORD look upon you with favor and + give you peace. Numbers 6:24 26 Amen, Amen, Amen CLOSING HYMN Drawn to the Cross, Which Thou Hast Blessed LW 356 3. Wash me and take away each stain; Let nothing of my sin remain. For cleansing, though it be through pain, Christ Crucified, I come. 4. And then for work to do for Thee, Which shall so sweet a service be That angels well might envy me, Christ Crucified, I come.
