THE BRIDGE Η ΓΕΦΥΡΑ Rejoice, bridge that truly leads us from death to life! Akathist Hymn DORMITION OF THE MOTHER OF GOD GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH 600 South Willard St., Burlington, VT 05401 Mailing address: P. O. Box 8122 Burlington VT 05402 (802) 862-2155 Fax: 881-0717 www.gocvt.org CLERGY Rev. Presbyter Andreas Papayiannis, 802-881-9459 E-mail: priest@gocvt.org March 2016 Rev. Fr. Robert Athas, Retired 802-865-4416 FATHER S MESSAGE My beloved in the Lord, In just a little over two weeks, we will begin our Lenten journey towards the Great and Holy Pascha, the Resurrection of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ, which will occur on May 1 this year. To prepare us all, bodily, mentally and, especially, spiritually, our Greek Orthodox tradition offers a full cycle of services for your enlightenment, edification and nourishment. On Monday, March 14, the 40 Days of Great Lent begins with Καθαρά Δευτέρα (Clean Monday). On the first four nights of that first week, the service of Great Compline with the Great of St. Andrew of Crete will be served. For the remaining weeks of Great Lent, Great Compline will be served each Monday evening. After each Compline service, I will be available to hear Confessions. On Wednesday and Fridays of Great Lent, the Liturgy of the Presanctified Gifts will be served. After each Wednesday Liturgy, a light Lenten meal will be offered followed by a brief Lenten Series seminar. On the first five Fridays of Great Lent, beginning on March 18, the Salutations to the Theotokos (Χαιρετισμοί της Θεοτόκου) will be served each evening. This service, of the Akathist Hymn, is considered by many to be the most beautiful and poetic service in the Orthodox Church. I am very grateful to all of you, the members of Dormition of the Mother of God Church, and our hierarch, His Eminence Metropolitan Methodios, for my assignment as your Priest. I look forward to meeting all of you in the next couple of weeks and throughout the period of Great Lent, and hope that you will join me in many of the Divine Services and programs we are offering. May our Lord God grant you strength in the Forty Days Καλή Σαρακοστή! In Christ s Love, +Father Andreas
