However, before going any farther, it is critical to separate wisdom from knowledge. Knowledge is facts, information, and skills acquired by a person. However, wisdom is the capacity of judging rightly in matters relating to life and conduct. I am sure that many a student has prayed for knowledge before an exam, and I am doubtful that such prayers are answered as the student requested, unless, of course, the student had prayed initially for wisdom, which would have guided them to study well in the first place! You see, knowledge is about knowing facts, but wisdom is about knowing what to do. St. John tells us that loving God is doing his will (1 John 5:3), and to do his will we must know his will. Through God s Word and his Church, we know God s will: Blessed are we, O Israel; for what pleases God is known to us! (Baruch 4:4). Yes, God has revealed his will to us, what pleases him! How wonderful! And this is not a matter of intelligence reserved for professors; it is a matter of wisdom, which is a gift of the Spirit. And Jesus tells us that God will grant the gift of the Spirit if we but ask How much more will the Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him? (Luke 11:13). As people like to say, This is not rocket science (or microbiology, in my case). This is praying for the Spirit, opening our being to His Wisdom, and reading God s Word to know his will that which pleases him. It s easy to focus on this when we are facing major life decisions. However, we should strive to know and do God s will in everything that we do all through our day every day of our life. Obeying God s commands through his will is loving God, and loving God is the first and greatest of the commandments. We are stewards of the wisdom of knowing what is pleasing to God. Let us partake of and develop this gift in all that we do. Paul Gulig Member, Stewardship Committee and Chair, Parish Council 3

All who die in God s grace and friendship still need to achieve purification. The Catholic Church gives the name Purgatory for this final preparation for eternal life. This is not a stage of punishment, but rather a stage of readiness. This doctrine is found in the Tradition of the Church, dating back to the Middle Ages.
