THE OLIN T. BINKLEY MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH APRIL 1, 2018 EASTER DAY BECOMING AWARE Such shameless Bards we have; and yet 'tis true, There are as mad, abandon'd Criticks too. The Bookful Blockhead, ignorantly read, With Loads of Learned Lumber in his Head, With his own Tongue still edifies his Ears, And always List'ning to Himself appears. All Books he reads, and all he reads assails, From Dryden's Fables down to Durfey's Tales. With him, most Authors steal their Works, or buy; Garth did not write his own Dispensary. Name a new Play, and he's the Poet's Friend, Nay show'd his Faults - but when wou'd Poets mend? No Place so Sacred from such Fops is barr'd, Nor is Paul's Church more safe than Paul's Church-yard: Nay, fly to Altars; there they'll talk you dead; For Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread. ---Alexander Pope, who first coined the phrase Fools rush in where Angels fear to tread, in his Essay On Criticism, (1709).

GATHERING PRE-SERVICE MUSIC Canzon Seconda The trumpet shall sound from MESSIAH Canzon Terza Cantata 51: Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen (Exult God in every land!) Piece d orgue, BWV 572 Giovanni Gabrieli G.F. Handel Gabrieli J.S. Bach J.S. Bach CHIMING OF THE HOUR INTROIT Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us Will C. MacFarlane Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast. Not with old leav'n, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ is risen, is risen from the dead: and become the first fruits of them that slept. For since by one, for since by one came death: by One came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam, for as in Eve all die: even so in Christ shall all be made alive. Glory to the Creator, and to the Christ, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: World without end. Amen. * CALL TO WORSHIP One: It is Easter Day, and the world is turned upside down. Many: We have come to sing and say, the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom. GIVING & RESPONDING ANTHEM AT THE OFFERTORY Light s Glittering Morn Craig Phillips Light s glittering morn bedecks the sky, Heaven thunders forth its victor cry; the glad earth shouts its triumph high, and groaning hell makes wild reply. While the King of glorious might treads down death s strength in death s despite, and tramp ling hell by victor s right, brings forth his sleeping saints to light. Hell s pains are loosed, and tears are fled; captivity is captive led; the angel crown d with light has said, The Lord is risen from the dead. We pray thee, King with glory decked, in this our paschal joy, protect from all that death would fain affect. Thy ransom d flock, thine own elect. Richard Rohr: Apr. 8-May 13, Sundays, 4-5:30 pm, Library. According to Rohr, a spiritual transition occurs from one half of life to the next. This transition may take years or happen quickly, when some unbidden event occurs that shakes our very foundation. It is at this point that the religion of our early years appears inadequate for the challenges of the adult life because it usually is. Falling Upward introduces readers to concepts that appear throughout Rohr s writing, including the two halves of spiritual life, the true and false self, the shadow self, and more. At the first session, we ll discuss the introduction and Chapter 1. If you are interested in a deeper study, A Companion Journal to Falling Upward is also available. The discussion will be facilitated by Cate Alexander, Binkley member and spiritual director. Contact office@binkleychurch.org to sign up. BINKLEY BODIES AND SOULS FOR JUSTICE: When Orange County Justice United (JU) needs large numbers of church people to show powerful citizen support for important public issues, Binkley Bodies and Souls for Justice springs alive into action. One such time will come on Tuesday, April 10. A JU Public Assembly will address affordable housing, jobs, and immigration in Orange County. We need to show public officials and candidates that there is wide support for addressing these issues. JU is asking Binkley Church to send at least 10 to 15 people. JU will challenge Board of Education candidates to support measures to make it easier for Latino and other immigrants to succeed in school and find employment. The affordable housing team will present a plan for

providing housing quickly for low income people who are homeless or near homeless. The meeting will be at Lattisville Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 1701 Jimmy Ed Rd, Hurdle Mills, from 7 to 9 p.m. Bus transportation is available from both the United Church of Chapel Hill and St. Thomas More Church. For more information, please contact Paul Lindsay, 919-604-1699 or plindsay2@aol.com. FAITH CONNECTIONS ON MENTAL ILLNESS: Apr. 13, 8 am, St. Thomas More: Cultivating Mental Health: This conference will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Chapel Hill on Friday, April 13 from 8 am to 4:15 pm. Funds raised support ongoing local branch efforts, scholarships, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. For information and tickets, contact Tom Fewel, tfewel@gmail.com. INQUIRER S CLASS TO START APRIL 29: The Inquirer s Class is a four-session opportunity for anyone interested in uniting with Binkley to learn more about our mission and ministries. It is also designed for those who ve recently joined the church. The class will meet during the Sunday School hour (9:45-10:40 am) for four consecutive weeks (4/29, 5/6, 13, and 20). The final session on May 20 falls on Pentecost Sunday and will include breakfast. Marcus McFaul will facilitate the class. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to office@binkleychurch.org by April 24. NEW BEGINNINGS ALL OVER OUR CHURCH THIS APRIL including the beautiful new look of our baptistery designed and rebuilt by Master Pool Guild Member, Michael Gress. Linda Vaughn discovered Michael in her search for contractors, and has he also contributed a generous portion of his fee back to Binkley. Assisting Michael along the way were Don Wilhoit and Charles Myhand who built the dust containment; Melinda Wilde, Anne Winfield, Linda Textoris, and Ruth Ann Ross who made the tile selection; Dale Osborne who served as troubleshooter for the unexpected, Fred Schroeder and Jim Summerfield who are refinishing the baseboard, and Alan Redick who was involved in the early stages. Charles and Dale also braved the acid baths used to clean the brick. Please give a word of appreciation to these folks when you see them. DEACON ELECTIONS: On April 15, we will elect new deacons to take office in May. These new deacons will replace those completing their three-year terms: Roal Carlson, Lillian Lee, Tim Ross, Brennetta Simpson, Karen Van Manen and Melinda Wilde. The new deacons will join Chair-elect Terry Huneycutt-Horn and Gretchen Aylsworth, Margie Billinger, Marcella Burk-Groon, Stuart Cantrell, Barbara Davis, Tom Fewel, Lyn Lamont, Allan Maltbie, and Anne Winfield. Our congregation speaks of the mission of Binkley Baptist Church as building compassion and joyful community. Deacons personify this by assisting our ministers in pastoral care for the congregation. This may differ from deacon to deacon as each decides how best to reach out to those members assigned to him/her in order to deepen our congregational connections. A list of Binkley members eligible to serve as new deacons will be posted in the narthex in the coming weeks. I hope that you will prayerfully consider leaving your name on the list of possible nominees this year. If you feel you are not able to serve as a deacon at this time, please mark your name off this list or notify Stephenie Sanders in the church office by April 9. The names remaining will become the nominees on the ballot on April 15. It has been my great joy to serve as your Diaconate Chair this past year. ~Melinda Wilde If you are interested in being a deacon and/or would like to learn more about what being a deacon entails, please see the April issue of the Binkley Beacon, p. 18.
