A Word from Pastor Tom... T oday, at the time of this writing, I ve received ashes, placed ashes on the foreheads of others, and had lunch with Trudy, her Lenten study ladies, and a Wimberley friend who grew up Catholic. During lunch, we talked about all sorts of things related to Ash Wednesday and beyond. Where did the idea of ashes on the forehead start? It s not biblical, is it? Is wine good for the heart? Have you ever been drunk? Who is the patron saint you bury upside down in your yard to sell your house? We talked about all these things during our meal. We learned a lot about Christian tradition and about one another. That happens when you sit down to study, eat, and spend time together in smaller doses than Sunday morning alone. You learn. You grow. You plunge deeper in love with God and His people. Traditionally, Ash Wednesday kicks off the season of Lent, a 40-day period of reflection and spiritual discipline leading up to Easter. It actually covers 46 days, but the six Sundays aren t included in the count. During the Lenten season, Asbury is offering additional study opportunities beyond our Sunday morning classes. On Mondays I m leading a brown-bag-lunch study at noon in Room 200. We ll discuss the previous Sunday s message and how it applies to our lives. Dale Berry leads another group with the same purpose on Wednesday nights at 6:00 p.m. Each of the Sundays during Lent I will be preaching about the Jesus Encounters found in John s Gospel. Also on Wednesdays, Trudy teaches from Max Lucado s book, He Chose the Nails at 9:30 a.m. and Terri Jolly leads the same study at 7:00 that evening. I would encourage you to find the study, the time, and the place which is most convenient for you. To live, to love, to laugh is all Jesus Christ! Tom

Two of our Lenten Studies will be based on Pastor Tom s sermons each Sunday. Discussion will be centered on his series based on encounters with Jesus in John s Gospel. Pastor Tom is leading the study on Mondays at noon upstairs in Room 200. Bring a bag lunch! Dale Berry is leading the study the study on Wednesday evenings at 6:00 in Room 206. Two of our Lenten Studies will be based on the book He Chose the Nails by Max Lucado. Lucado invites us to understand the symbols surrounding Christ's crucifixion and celebrate the significance of the promises they offer. From the sign in different languages tacked to the cross ("I will speak to you in your language") to the burial clothing ("I can turn your tragedy into triumph"), he speaks of each symbol as a "gift of grace" that reveals God's love for mankind. Pastor Trudy is leading this study on Wednesday morning at 9:30 upstairs in Room 203. Terri Jolly is leading the study on Wednesday nights at 7:00 upstairs in Room 202.

This experience allows us to "be changed." We open the door by sharing our experiences, strengths, and hopes with one another. In addition, we become willing to accept God's grace in solving our lives' problems. By working and applying these Biblical Principles, we begin to grow spiritually. We become free from our addictive, compulsive, and dysfunctional behaviors. This freedom creates peace, serenity, joy, and most importantly, a stronger personal relationship with God and others. As we progress through the program, we discover our personal, loving, and forgiving Higher power Jesus Christ. Welcome to an AMAZING SPIRITUAL ADVENTURE! Childcare provided
