FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT GOD S PROMISE May peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year through! The lengthy passage from Samuel is a wonderful exposition of God s promise to the House of David: that his throne would forever be gloriously occupied by his descendants. Hidden in the mystery of the prophecy is the promise of the Savior, the Messiah, Son of God and Son of David. The prophet Nathan, speaking in God s name, poetically turns around David s plan to build a house for God, and announces God s plan to build a house, that is, a dynasty for David. From this House of David will come the Messiah, the Christ, not in kingly splendor as David ruled, but as a humble man, destined to rule forever and over all. When God gives a gift, it s amazing what we are given so different and more wonderful than what we ever could have imagined. Luke 1:31-33 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of David his father, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end. +BLESSED CHRISTMAS WISHES+ We wish you and your loved ones a truly joyous and peace-filled Christmas. Please be assured of our prayers on this Christmas Day and all throughout this wonderful season. May God bless you, All! May you have the gladness of Christmas, which is hope, the spirit of Christmas, which is peace, the heart of Christmas, which is love. And, may you be blessed throughout this Holy Season and in the New Year 2018. Monsignor Francis J. McAree Father Abraham Vallayil Deacon John Kelleher, and Deacon John Jurasek and the Staff of St. Catharine s Church TODAY S READINGS First Reading I will fix a place for my people. O HOLY NIGHT O Holy Night, the story of the birth of our Savior, has become one of the most beautiful, inspired pieces of music ever created and one of the most beloved and cherished Christmas hymns. You just can t help but get a thrill when the Choir sings the chorus, Fall on your knees But the carol, O Holy Night was actually banned by Church leadership, and if it were not for the common people, the powerful song would have faded into obscurity. In 1847, a commissioner of wine in France, M. Placide Cappeau de Roquemaure, was asked by his Parish Priest to write a poem for the Christmas Eve service. On a bumpy carriage ride to Paris, the gentleman imagined himself a witness to the birth of Christ. Thoughts of being present on the blessed night inspired him. The wonder of that glorious moment flowed through his pen, and he gave us the poem, Cantique de Noel ( Song of Christmas ). Cappeau had the words, but now he needed the music to lift souls heavenward in song. He asked his friend, Adolphe Charles Adams. It was an unusual request. Adams was a trained classical musician, but he was of the Jewish faith. Nevertheless, he good naturedly received his friend s request and began at once to compose an original tune for the poem. When it was done, it was a perfect match, unlike anything that had been heard before, and the song was performed for the Congregation on Christmas Eve. Churches across France embraced this amazing new hymn and it became a staple at Christmas Masses. But, later, after Cappeau left the Church for the philosophy of Socialism, and after it was discovered that the Composer was not of the Christian faith, the Church leadership banned the song from its liturgy throughout France. However, the French people would not let the song die and continued to embrace it even if they had to sing it outside the official approval of the Church. Ten years later, an American abolitionist, John Sullivan Dwight, heard the carol and was moved by the lyrics and the grand soaring score. He loved its vibrant message of hope and felt it was the perfect marriage between the Good News of the Gospel, and the freedom that Jesus represented. Please, continue Especially the verse that says, Truly, He taught us to love one another, His law is love and His gospel is peace. Chains shall He break, for the slave is our brother, and in His name all oppression shall cease. Mr. Dwight s English translation, O Holy Night, quickly became popular in the North during the American Civil War. Legend has it that the French Catholic Church finally received the song back into its worship services after an encounter between French and German troops during the Franco-Prussian War. During a lull in fighting, a French soldier began singing, Cantique de Noel. The Germans were so moved that they responded by singing one of their Christmas hymns. The story goes that the fighting stopped for the next twenty four hours while the men on both sides observed a temporary peace in honor of Christmas Day. Perhaps this story had a part in the French Church embracing Cantique de Noel in its Christmas services again. The end of this story involves the beginning of modern technology the invention of the radio. On Christmas Eve, 1906, Reginald Fessenden, a former Chief Chemist for Thomas Edison, was experimenting with a microphone and the telegraph. Fessenden began reading the story of the birth of Jesus, from Luke Chapter 2. Unknown to him, around the world, wireless operators on ships and at newspaper desks, began to hear a man s voice come out of their machines. It was the first radio broadcast of a man s voice and it was the Gospel of Christ! And, it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed To the few who caught this broadcast, it must have seemed like a miracle, hearing a voice somehow transmitted to those far away. But, it doesn t end there. After Fessenden finished his recitation of the birth of Christ, he picked up his violin, sat close to his microphone and played, O Holy Night, making it the first song ever played over the airwaves. O Holy Night. The song requested by a Parish Priest, written by a Poet who would later leave the Church, given soaring music by a Jewish Composer, banned by Church Leaders, kept alive by the French, brought to America to serve as much as a tool to spotlight the sinful nature of slavery, sung by Troops in the trenches uniting Soldiers on the battlefield and, at last, broadcast to the whole world by invisible radio waves that would eventually spread the Gospel all over the world. The first song ever played over the radio O Holy Night. A miracle indeed! Fall on your knees. O hear the angels voices. O night divine. The night when Christ was born. O night divine. for Brad Arreglado
