FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT SUNDAY COLLECTION BASKET MARCH 6, 2016 $ 10,056 MARCH 8, 2015 $ 7,964 MARCH 13, 2016 First Reading: Isaiah 43:16-21 God says not to remember the events from long ago, but to focus on the things he plans to do next. He also claims he will again help his chosen people when they need him. Second Reading: Philippians 3:8-14 Paul describes knowledge of Jesus as more important than knowledge of the Old Law. He wishes to share in the power of Jesus' resurrection, and speaks of concentrating on the finish line of the race with salvation as the prize to be won. Gospel: John 8:1-11 Jesus preached forgiveness of sin, but in the old law those accused of adultery were to be stoned. So the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus and brought a woman accused of adultery to him, asking him what he would do to her. Jesus asked that one without sin cast the first stone, and then all of the elders left. Jesus told the woman that he did not condemn her, but warned her to avoid such sin in the future. Following dinner, you are most welcome to join us in the church for our traditional Stations of the Cross beginning at 7:30 p.m. So, please allow us to care for both body and soul this Lent by participating in this parish family meal followed by the Stations of the Cross. PARISH CARDINAL S APPEAL UPDATE As of Friday, March 4th, our returns indicate that, at present, our parish has received total pledges amounting to $38,661.00 from 108 individuals and households. This represents 46 % of our assigned parish goal of $84,000.00. It comes out to an average gift of $357.97. We are very concerned that each and every individual and household is accurately enrolled in our newly updated parish database. If you have not received this year s Cardinal s Appeal letter, in the mail, then we d like to fix this as soon as possible. Please contact the parish office during the week. Its meant a lot of hours and hard work at our end but it is our fervent hope to eventually have all of our parishioners properly registered with Saint Aedan s. Thank you for your help and your patience with this. (845-735-7405). WELCOME TO THE CARDINAL S APPEAL IN PEW SOLICITATION WEEKEND As announced from the pulpit last Sunday, this weekend, the pastors of the Archdiocese are being asked to dedicate some pulpit time to this year s Cardinal s Appeal. If you have already received an appeal letter in the mail but have not yet sent in your pledge, please do so this week. You may mail it to the Appeal Office or else drop it off at the Parish House office. In addition, this weekend, the faithful are being asked to give prayerful consideration to making a sacrificial pledge at each of our Sunday masses. Your pledge will help support the vital services of the Archdiocese religious education for our public school children; Catholic school education; seminary training for our future priests; a dignified retirement for our elderly religious sisters and brothers; the never ending requests Catholic Charities receives from the large numbers of the poor and the needy amongst us. Additional envelopes are available in the lobby of the church or from the parish office. Please pledge whatever your own personal financial means will allow. Thank you and God bless you. Whatsoever you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, that you do unto me. _ SUPPORT OUR UNIFORMED MEN AND WOMEN God bless all of our uniformed men and women who serve both at home and abroad. David Trancyner, Ian Michael Parise, Martin O'Neill, Mark B. Kelly, Kevin Gulino, Neil Fitzgerald. Saint Michael the Archangel pray for them! VISIT CARDINAL DOLAN S BLOG DAILY LENTEN REFLECTIONS www.cardinaldolan.org ST. PATRICK S DAY MARCH 17TH St. Patrick is the Principal Patron of the Archdiocese of New York and Titular Patron of the Metropolitan Cathedral. Archiocesan churches will, therefore, regard the day as a Solemnity and masses will feature white vestments. Saint Patrick, born about 389, was believed to be of Roman British origins. It is believed that he may have come from Wales. He eventually founded the Metropolitan See of Armagh and Confessio; the famous Lorica (breastplate), a work praising Christ, is probably his. He is also the Patron Saint of Nigeria and traditionally regarded as the Apostle and Patron Saint of Ireland. He died in 461 at Down. The Rockland County St. Patrick s Parade this year will take place in Pearl River on Sunday, March 20 th beginning at 1:30 p.m. THE HOLY SEASON OF LENT ALMSGIVING AND MITE BOXES Many thanks to those of you who decided to incorporate the Mite Box into your Lenten Almsgiving efforts. The money raised will support the charitable efforts of Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland. (CCCSR). When you are ready, please bring your box to mass with you and deposit it into one of the receptacles located in the lobby of the church. When I was hungry, when I was thirsty, when I was naked or ill.. AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) TRAINING OPPORTUNITY TUESDAY EVENING, MARCH 29TH It s not too late to answer the call to join our parish AED response team. Our upcoming training session will be held in our parish hall on Tuesday, March 29 th starting at 7:00 PM. Please call the parish office and confirm your attendance at our upcoming training session. Please RSVP and let Msgr. Nevin know if you are willing to be added to our parish list of trained AED responders (735-7405) or staedan@optonline.net. Health care personnel and those who already have a current CPR card are especially welcome to join our team. You will not need this training just let us know who you are. PLEASE JOIN OUR EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM BAD WEEK AT BLACK ROCK This past week sort of reminded us of that old Spencer Tracy movie where everything seemed to plot against the hero of the movie and everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Some of you have commented on the additional activity going on. We had to undertake a series of capital repairs both large and small. The closing arm of one of our church inside doors broke and was leaking oil. Not to be outdone, an inside door of the gym lobby also had to be repaired so it could close all the way The toilet of the church lavatory was backing up due to a

blockage in the line. The main sewer pipe leading out to Ehrhardt Road was jammed due to a surface access cap having been forced down the pipe, clogging the entire line (a mystery). This required a day of excavation and repair. The curbside metal drainage grating by the front of the gym developed a deep, sunken area and was in danger of future collapsing unless dug up and repaired We are also aware of the driveway potholes and we had to put a safety cone in it for now. We will have the potholes filled when the asphalt plant opens up next month during the warmer weather. All told, this package of unexpected capital repairs gobbled up about half of our weekend s total collection. You homeowners know, very well, about these things! We share this information with you because St. Aedan s is OUR parish home and all of you are the homeowners and so it s important for you to know what s going on. Thanks to all who financially support our parish by diligently sending us your sacrificial offerings every week whether you are at home or away. A special thanks to those of you who faithfully stand by your INCREASED GIVING commitment each and every week. CRAFT FAIR DAY AT ST. JOSEPH S REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL, MONTVALE TODAY - SUNDAY, MARCH 13 TH 10 AM 4 PM The Craft Show/Sale showcases the talents of 90 crafts people and fine artists including many new crafters. Admission is just $2.00. Children and senior citizens (65+) are free. Please - No strollers are permitted. <WWW.SJRNJ.ORG> + LENTEN STATIONS OF THE CROSS + Via Delorosa Way of Sorrows Were you there when they crucified my Lord? Come and join us here at Saint Aedan as we pray and meditate on the Stations of the Cross every Friday evening during Lent at 7:30 PM. The timing is perfect for those wishing to join us for our parish family gathering, Pasta with the Parish which takes place just before the stations, from 6:00 p.m. until 7:15 p.m. We adore You O Christ and we praise you because by Your holy cross You have redeemed the world. + SAINT PATRICK S CATHEDRAL + CHRISM MASS TUESDAY OF HOLY WEEK ROCKLAND COACH BUS AVAILABLE The Mass of Chrism, Tuesday (3/22) of Holy Week, is a tradition which goes all the way back to the 5 th century of our church. This, once a year, celebration manifests the unity of the priests with their bishop. This is an opportunity to celebrate Holy Mass with our Cardinal Archbishop Timothy Dolan and his brother bishops and hundreds of our priests and deacons in our beautifully restored Cathedral of Saint Patrick. During the Mass, the Cardinal will also bless three sacred oils, the Oil of Catechumens, the Oil of the Sick and Holy Chrism. These oils will be used in the administration of the sacraments throughout the entire Archdiocese during the upcoming year. The faithful of our Rockland Parishes are urged to make their attendance at this very beautiful and unique Mass of Chrism a special part of their preparation for Easter. For your convenience, the Rockland Deanery is sponsoring a coach bus which will be departing from the, centrally located, St. Francis of Assisi parking lot, Parrot Road, West Nyack, at 1PM that day. The 4:00 PM Mass traditionally ends by 5:30 PM and everyone will then re-board the bus for the ride home. A block of seats has been reserved for our Rockland County bus contingent. Those who are interested in attending the Chrism Mass or who would like further information are asked to contact the Deanery Office (St. Aedan s) at 845-735-7405. You may confirm your seat reservation (first come basis) by mailing or dropping off your non-refundable) $20 check - payable to Saint Aedan Church.
