Synods of Bishops on the Family 2014-2015 Synods of Bishops on the Family The Synod is an assembly of bishops from around the world who assist the Holy Father by providing counsel on important ques ons facing the Church in a manner that preserves the Church's teaching and strengthens her internal discipline. (For more informa on, please see the Va can website and Code of Canon Law, canon 342.) October 8, 2013 Pope Francis announces an Extraordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for October 2014 on topics related to the family and evangeliza on. Subsequent communica ons made clear that the Extraordinary General Assembly would be followed by an Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops in October 2015, on the same topics. November 6, 2013 The Va can releases a preparatory document en tled Pastoral Challenges to the Family in the Context of Evangeliza on. To allow the par cular Churches to par cipate ac vely in the prepara on of the Extraordinary Synod, this document includes a ques onnaire addressing topics such as the knowledge of Church Doctrine among Catholics, the percentage of unmarried couples living together, addressing the spiritual needs of divorced couples and gays, and how to best foster a culture of life. June 24, 2014 Over 90% of the episcopal conferences around the send responses to the ini al preparatory document, which forms the basis for the document known as the Instrumentum Laboris. This document provides a substan ve reflec on on the major challenges facing the family today, and outlines the topics of discussion at the Extraordinary General Assembly. October 5-19, 2014 253 par cipants gather in Va can City to par cipate in the synod, including 114 presidents of Bishops' Conferences, 13 heads of Eastern Catholic Churches sui iuris, 25 heads of the dicasteries of the Roman Curia, nine members of the Ordinary Council for the Secretariat, and 38 auditors (including 13 married couples, and 16 experts). At the outset, Pope Francis encouraged the Synod fathers to speak openly, even if they had an opinion they were worried would conflict with those of the Holy Father ( It is necessary to say with parrhesia all that one feels. ). October 19, 2014 Pope Francis releases the Rela o Synodi (final report) of the Extraordinary Synod. According to the conclusion of the document: These proposed reflec ons, the fruit of the synodal work that took place in great freedom and with a spirit of reciprocal listening, are intended to raise ques ons and indicate points of view that will later be developed and clarified through reflec on in the local Churches in the intervening year leading to the XIV Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops (n. 62) December 11, 2014 The Synod Secretariat releases the Lineamenta, which includes both the Rela o as well as a series of ques ons to generate an in-depth examina on of the work ini ated during the Extraordinary Assembly. The episcopal conferences are asked to choose a suitable manner of involving all components of the par cular churches and academic ins tu ons, organiza ons, lay movements and other ecclesial associa ons. The Catholic Diocese of Dallas par cipates in this ques onnaire by collec ng answers via an online survey. June 23, 2015 The Instrumentum Laboris is released to serve as the "working document" for the Ordinary Synod. It contains the Rela o Synodi from the conclusion of the III Extraordinary Synod, as well as a summary of the responses to the ques ons in the Lineamenta. As explained by Cardinal Baldisseri in the Presenta on of the Instrumentum Laboris, the three sec ons of the document "illustrate the con nuity between the two Assembles". October 4-25, 2015 The Fourteenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, commonly known as the Synod on the Family, takes place at the Synod Hall in the Paul VI Audience Hall in Va can City. Va can officials announced a few days before the opening Mass that the 2015 assembly of the Synod would be run with three mini-synods, one a week, for the three week dura on. In week one, the bishops discuss challenges facing the family, in week two the bishops address the voca on of the family, and the final week is devoted to the mission of the family today. The final mini-synod contains some of the most controversial issues, and small group sessions are conducted throughout the final week.

Continued October 24, 2015 The Final Report of the Synod of Bishops to the Holy Father, Pope Francis is published. The conclusion of the document states: We hope that the result of this work, now delivered into the hands of the Successor of Peter, might give hope and joy to many families in the world, guidance to pastors and pastoral workers, and a s mulus to the work of evangeliza on. In concluding this report, we humbly ask the Holy Father to consider the possibility of issuing a document on the family, so that the family, the domes c Church, might increasingly radiate Christ, who is the light of the world. April 8, 2016 The Va can releases a postsynodal apostolic exhorta on tled 'Amoris Lae a: On Love in the Family'. The joy of love experienced by families is also the joy of the Church. As the Synod Fathers noted, for all the many signs of crisis in the ins tu on of marriage, the desire to marry and form a family remains vibrant, especially among young people, and this is an inspira on to the Church. As a response to that desire, the Chris an proclama on on the family is good news indeed. (Amoris Lae a, 1) Thus begins The Joy of Love, (Amoris Lae a), Pope Francis long an cipated Apostolic Exhorta on on the family that was released Friday morning calling for a new pastoral approach to the increasingly complex reali es of families in today s world, not focusing on the so called nuclear family but on the family as a wider network of many rela onships. Thus in his exhorta on, the Holy Father looks to the reality of the family today in all its complexity, with both its lights and shadows. (AL, 32) Among those addressed are single-parent families, those in irregular marriages, grandparents as surrogate parents and other wounded families. This is a long and very significant document and I an cipate wri ng many blogs about it but here are a few salient points of this very pastoral exhorta on. While recognizing that Chris an marriage, is fully realized in the union between a man and a woman as a reflec on of the union between Christ and his Church (AL, 292) the Holy Father states that, there is no need to lay upon two limited persons the tremendous burden of having to reproduce perfectly the union exis ng between Christ and his Church, for marriage as a sign entails a dynamic process, one which advances gradually with the progressive integra on of the gi s of God. (AL, 121) It is the love of Jesus, the Pope explains, that brings joy to families. The Lord s presence dwells in real and concrete families, with all their daily troubles and struggles, joys and hopes. Living in a family makes it hard for us to feign or lie; we cannot hide behind a mask. If that authen city is inspired by love, then the Lord reigns there, with his joy and his peace. The spirituality of family love is made up of thousands of small but real gestures. In that variety of gi s and encounters which deepen communion, God has his dwelling place. This mutual concern brings together the human and the divine for it is filled with the love of God. In the end, marital spirituality is a spirituality of the bond in which divine love dwells. (AL, 315) As this is a pastoral document, the Pope neither proposes or an cipates changes in the Church s tradi onal teaching, yet points out that When faced with difficult situa ons and wounded families, it is always necessary to recall this general principle: Pastors must know that, for the sake of truth, they are obliged to exercise careful discernment of situa ons (Familiaris Consor o, 84). The degree of responsibility is not equal in all cases and factors may exist which limit the ability to make a decision. While clearly sta ng the Church s teaching, pastors are to avoid judgements that do not take into account the complexity of various situa ons. (AL, 79) For the faithful who are living together, the document con nues, or are only married civilly, or are divorced and remarried, following the divine pedagogy, the Church turns with love to those who par cipate in her life in an imperfect manner: she seeks the grace of conversion for them; she encourages them to do good, to take loving care of each other and to serve the community in which they live and work. When a couple in an irregular union a ains a noteworthy stability through a public bond and is characterized by deep affec on, responsibility towards the children and the ability to overcome trials, this can be seen as an opportunity, where possible, to lead them to celebrate the Sacrament of Matrimony. (AL, 78) Finally, the Holy Father explains, There are two ways of thinking which recur throughout the Church s history: cas ng off and reinsta ng. The Church s way, from the me of the Council of Jerusalem, has always been the way of Jesus, the way of mercy and reinstatement The way of the Church is not to condemn anyone forever; it is to pour out the balm of God s mercy on all those who ask for it with a sincere heart. (AL, 327) There are those who will be disappointed with this document; some who feel it does not go far enough in addressing the hopes of those in irregular marriages, others who feel it compromises tradi onal teaching. In my opinion, it reflects the call of Jesus to his church to con nue his healing and saving mission. We will have much more to say about Amoris Lae a. The complete document is available at www.cathdal.org/joyoflove, where you can also find a short summary, answers to ques ons you may have, a history of the Synods on the Family, and many other resources. Please pray for all families, no ma er their circumstances, and those who minister to them.
