Revelation Chapter 7 Lesson 8

Revelation 7:1-2 1 After this I saw four angels standing upon the four corners of the earth, grasping the four winds of the earth in order that no wind might blow upon the earth, nor upon the sea, nor upon any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the rising of the sun having the seal of the living God, and he cried out with a great voice to the four angels who had been given permission to harm the earth and the sea,

Revelation 7:3 3 saying do not harm the earth nor the sea, nor the trees, until we have sealed the slaves of our God upon their foreheads.

Revelation 7:4-6 4 And I heard the number of the ones having been sealed, one hundred forty four thousand, being sealed out of all the tribes of the sons of Israel. 5 out of the tribe of Ruben, twelve thousand, out of the tribe of Gad, twelve thousand, 6 out of the tribe of Asher, twelve thousand, out of the tribe of Naphtali, twelve thousand, out of the tribe of Manasseh, twelve thousand,

Revelation 7:7-8 7 out of the tribe of Simeon, twelve thousand, out of the tribe of Levi, twelve thousand, out of the tribe of Issachar, twelve thousand, 8 out of the tribe of Zebulun, twelve thousand, out of the tribe Joseph, twelve thousand, out of the tribe of Benjamin, twelve thousand, having been sealed.

Dan Dan was the fifth son of Jacob. Although initially assigned land north of Judah and west of the Benjamin tribe, the tribe of Dan eventually moved to the very northern area of Israel and settled there. Two instances of religious unfaithfulness are associated with the city of Dan that would have been the captured ancient City of Laish. Judges 18 describes the people of Dan capturing an idol and setting it up in the city. Then, According to 1 Kings 12:25-33, Jeroboam, king of the northern kingdom of Israel, established an illegitimate sanctuary at Dan. The Testament of Dan (c. 2d century B.C.) states that the prince of Dan is Satan and predicts that in the last days you will defect from the Lord (5:4-6). The 2d-century Christian writer Irenaeus claimed that Dan is omitted from the list of tribes in Revelation because the antichrist is to come from the tribe of Dan (Haer. 5.30.2).

Revelation 7:9-10 9 After this I looked, and behold (there was) a great crowd that no one was able to count from every nation and tribe and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, having been clothed in white clothing and (with) palm branches in their hands, and they were calling out in a great voice saying, Salvation belongs to our God, the one seated upon the throne and to the lamb.

Revelation 7:11-12 11 And all the angels stood around the throne and the elders and the four living beings and they fell before the throne upon their faces and worshipped God 12 saying, Amen, the blessing and the glory and the wisdom and the thanksgiving and the honor and the power and the might (be) to our God for ever and ever; Amen.

Revelation 7:13-14 13 And one of the elders answered saying to me, Who are the ones clothed in the white clothing and from where have they come? 14 And I said to him, My lord, you know. And he said to me, these are the ones coming out of the great tribulation and they have washed their clothing and whitened them in the blood of the lamb.

Revelation 7:15-17 15 For this reason they are before the throne of God and worship (λατρεύω) him day and night in his temple, and the one seated upon the throne will pitch his tent over them. 16 They will not be hungry again nor thirst again nor will the sun fall upon them nor any burning heat, 17 for the Lamb in the middle of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of the water of life, and God will wipe out every teardrop from their eyes.

Isaiah 49:10 - they shall not hunger or thirst, neither scorching wind nor sun shall strike them down, for he who has pity on them will lead them, and by springs of water will guide them. 25:8 - Then the Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the LORD has spoken.

What this text does not say. One student wrote, After reading the book of Revelation all the way through, I wondered where the rest of the information was located. From what I have heard in and around church, I expected more or maybe just different text. One example of my misconceptions is that I understood from my religious background that after Jesus returns to earth and resurrects the saved that 144,000 more Jews would become saved. However, after reading Revelation I think this concept is incorrect.

What about those situations when God does not seem to protect people from the forces of evil? First, John never promises Christians that they will not face hardship, persecution or even death. In fact he says they will face all of these things. Secondly, Revelation proclaims powerfully and loudly that in all circumstances the appropriate response of Christians is to trust God.

Daniel 3:17-18 If our God whom we serve is able to deliver 17 us from the furnace of blazing fire and out of your hand, O king, let him deliver us. But if 18 not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods and we will not worship the golden statue that you have set up.
