Jesus First Sermon The Lord's Anointed Luke 4:16-30 cf: Isaiah 61:1ff Luke 4:16-30 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave [it] again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? 23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. 24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias (Elijah), when the heaven was shut up three years and six months (I Kings 17), when great famine was throughout all the land; 26 But unto none of them was Elias (Elijah) sent, save unto Sarepta, [a city] of Sidon, unto a woman [that was] a widow. 27 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus (Elisha) the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian (II Kings 5:1ff). 28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. 30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way, Let s look again just at this prophetic scripture Jesus says He fulfills. Luke 4:17-21 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears Now let s look at the prophecy Jesus read from in Isaiah cf:

Isaiah 61:1-2 The Spirit of the Lord GOD [is] upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to [them that are] bound; 2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; Notice what Jesus does He leaves out the clause: and the day of vengeance of our God; He just skips over it and goes to the clause He uses in the Sermon on the Mount to comfort all that mourn; Isaiah 61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; Luke 4: 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book Jesus suspend or put on hold vengeance for 40 years after His crucifixion, until the destruction of Jerusalem which was God s judgment, carried out by Christ coming in the destruction of the apostate Jews who had by that time already murdered their Messiah and persecuted the apostles and early Christians unto death. The word anointed in Hebrew is Maw-shee-akh (Messiah) which we translate in the New Testament as Christ. In the Old Testament the King, Prophets and High Priests were called anointed ones but there was always the promise of a special anointed one Shiloh ie: Him to whom it belongs would come cf: Genesis 49:10-11. Let s look at Psalm 2 as an example This Psalm is Remarkable for its eloquent change of persons. It is like a heavenly stage play with many different speakers, the prophet speaks, the many enemies speak, God speaks and the Messiah all speak and have a part during this Psalm. The Spirit is upon the prophet and in these first two verses the Prophet Speaks and foretells of the coming Messiah or Christ and the result of the Messiah s ministry. Now the Prophet speaks: Psalms 2:1-2 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? 2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, [saying], Now the Enemies Speak:

Psalm 2:3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. 4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. 5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. When did God speak to the Jews in His wrath? When Jesus came in judgment in the 70 AD destruction of the Jewish nation, the Temple and the city of Jerusalem is when He spoke to them in His wrath. Isaiah 61 includes a prophecy of the coming Messiah and God s wrath for the rejection and murder of God Anointed: No matter what they do Yet Psalm 2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. The exact meaning of the Hebrew verb here translated in the clause: I have set has caused much discussion since the first century. The rabbinic text Midrash Tehillim of the book of Psalms has several meanings for the verb we translate set : I have set my King, I have anointed Him as in Daniel 10:3; I made Him firm or literally cast Him up cf: Exodus 32:4; or I raised Him up literally exalted Him or made Him great as in: Micah 5:4 or Ezekiel 32:30. Fulfilled in Christ given all power or authority cf: Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, [even] unto the end of the world. Psalm 2:6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion. The Messiah Speaks Psalm 2:7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou [art] my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Jesus finished the work God gave Him to accomplish and declared the decree of God. John 17: 4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. Now God Answers the Messiah

Psalm 2:8 Ask of me, and I shall give [thee] the heathen [for] thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth [for] thy possession. The result of the ministry, death, burial and resurrection of the Messiah will be the conquest of the Gentile world with the Gospel. Mark 16: 15-16 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Psalm 2:9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. The rod is the word of God the means by which stubborn, rebellious men will be broken. It is a rod of iron because it, itself is unbreakable cf: John 10:35 the scripture cannot be broken; Now the prophet advises the enemies to submit to God and His Messiah cf: Psalm 2:10-12 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish [from] the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed [are] all they that put their trust in him. How do we know that this Son and King mentioned in Psalm 2 is talking about Jesus? Because an inspired apostle told us it is cf: Acts 4: 24-28 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou [art] God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: 25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? 26 The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. 27 For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, 28 For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. The Anointed Messiah or Christ is to be a King and the Psalmist says of Him cf: Psalms 45:6-7 Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom [is] a right sceptre. 7 Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest

wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. How do we know this Psalm is talking about Christ? Well the Hebrew writer quotes it and says it is cf: Hebrews 1: 8-12 But unto the Son [he saith], Thy throne, O God, [is] for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness [is] the sceptre of thy kingdom.9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, [even] thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool? Daniel prophecies the Anointed one is to be cut off (killed) cf: Daniel 9:24-27 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, [that] from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince [shall be] seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof [shall be] with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make [it] desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate. Remember Jesus read from Isaiah 61:1-2 in His first sermon Luke 4:18-19 The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Notice Jesus left the word vengeance out when He reads Isaiah 61 in His first sermon and later explains that the vengeance will be in the coming destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD cf: Luke 21:20-24 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. 21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter there into. 22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. 23 But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. 24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled. Now Peter is going to teach what Jesus is anointed with cf: Acts 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him. 36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) 37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; 38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. 39 And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: 40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; 41 Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. 42 And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead. 43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. This shows us Christ was Anointed with the Holy Spirit cf: Now we as Christians are anointed with the Holy Spirit at our baptism cf: Acts 2:38-39 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

thus we are anointed II Corinthians 1:21-22 Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; 22 Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts. not to work miracles see Romans 8 as an example of the Holy Spirit in us. Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD [is] upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to [them that are] bound; The reign of the Messiah is like a Jubilee the freeing sinful souls from darkness of sin and paganism. Isaiah 61:2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn; II Corinthians 6:2 (For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now [is] the accepted time; behold, now [is] the day of salvation.) Matthew 5: 4 Blessed [are] they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Isaiah 61:3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified. The trees of righteousness are the members of the body of Christ. Isaiah 61:4 And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations. The New Testament Apostles and prophets applied verses like this spiritually cf: Acts 15: 15-16 And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, 16 After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:

Isaiah 61:5 And strangers shall stand and feed your flocks, and the sons of the alien [shall be] your plowmen and your vinedressers. The Kingdom of God or Church of Christ will be a new society offered to the Jews first in the first century and then the Gentiles and all the world till he comes cf: Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. Isaiah 61:6 But ye shall be named the Priests of the LORD: [men] shall call you the Ministers of our God: ye shall eat the riches of the Gentiles, and in their glory shall ye boast yourselves. cf: Only members of the Church of Christ were ever designated as a Priesthood and there will never be a clergy distinction from the laity in the brotherhood of believers. I Peter 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. Isaiah 61:7 For your shame [ye shall have] double; and [for] confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them. There will be marvelous blessings to be obtained through the Messiah. Isaiah 61:8 For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. God hates the worship of the hypocritical apostate murdering Jews who were called to be God s chosen people and He will make a new covenant with the Church of Christ cf: Jeremiah 31:31ff What is this everlasting covenant? Isaiah has told us cf: Isaiah 55:3 Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, [even] the sure mercies of David. Isaiah 61:9 And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they [are] the seed [which] the LORD hath blessed.

Galatians 3:29 And if ye [be] Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Isaiah 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh [himself] with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth [herself] with her jewels. Isaiah 64: 6 But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. But God has a change of righteousness for the New Covenant Church of Christ. We must all come in the appointed way. The robe of righteousness is our new standing with God in which our filthy rags are exchanged for the righteousness of God. Cf: Isaiah 61:11 For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations. Romans 3: 21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; 22 Even the righteousness of God [which is] by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: II Corinthians 5: 21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
