Spring Training Hearing God 2/14/16 Luke 8:4-15 Sunday AM In baseball there are (4) fundamental steps in pitching Set Lift Separation Finish. And while each step has its own nuisances, every pitcher has to figure out his unique delivery according to these basic steps. The same is true in the Christian life. The basic elements of the following Christ are KNOWING God, HEARING His voice, and OBEYING His leading. And every believer embarks on this journey in their own unique way. For several weeks, we ve been discussing the essential elements required of someone who desires to follow Jesus as a disciple. Last week we began focusing on the fundamental element of hearing/distinguishing God s voice in our daily lives as we learned THAT God Speaks. Personally, I believe this is absolute priority of the Christian. If the Christian does not know when God is speaking, he is in deep trouble at the heart of His Christian life! Blackaby The idea of God speaking shouldn t seem too mystical to us. Throughout Scripture there are countless stories of God speaking to His people. From Adam in Genesis to John in Revelation, God not only spoke, but spoke clearly to anyone who would listen. And this same God speaks to us today.

Personally, I ve discovered that God is always speaking even when He is silent; I m just not always listening or have learned how to distinguish His voice but when I m living in tune w/ His Spirit I often hear Him w/ great clarity. It s funny how quickly we learn someone s voice and recognize sounds. Truth is that after spending a few min. w/ me today, if I were to call you later, you d instantly know my voice. Why? B/c familiarity breeds recognition. I saw this truth once skiing. As I was swishing down the mtn, I was surprised by a group of blind skiers. Skiing is hard enough when you can see; imagine skiing w/out sight under the direction of someone else s voice. Ski guides use voice commands and a tapping technique to guide blind skiers down the hill. Despite the clamor of other skiers, a blind skier has learned how to distinguish his guide s voice. The same is true in our walk w/ God. We have no idea what lies beyond the next turn or crest, but He does. To make it in life, we must learn the voice of the Good Shepherd. To get on the right frequency w/ God requires being frequent w/ God. Key if we re going to follow Jesus and experience life as He intends, it ll require we hear and know His voice so that He can direct our steps.

Last week, we saw THAT God has spoken into the lives of His people to lead them to His heart and will for their lives. And just as He has spoken to the patriarchs/prophets in the O.T. and to the disciples in the Gospels He is still speaking to us today through the Bible and the H.S. Knowing this we must begin the listening process by: BELIEVING God Wants to Speak to Us Trust Seek Ask POSITIONING Our Lives to Hear Him Speak Time Scripture People DEVELOPING Our Spiritual Listening Skills Mediate Worship Journal DETERMINING to Follow His Leading Prepare Anticipate Act Today, I want to continue to develop our understanding of how God speaks by learning how to distinguish His voice. In the Bible we learn there are (3) words regarding the voice of God logos rhema and hupakouo. logos is the general expression of God s truth applicable to everyone. It is God s truth needed for life and salvation. It is truth for everyone. The Bible is logos. In the Bible we find everything we need for life and godliness. It reveals to us the truth of God, the way of salvation, and the parameters and guidelines of the disciple-life. Logos is about knowing God.

For the word (logos) of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 rhema is truth realized by revelation special to you. It s God speaking logos directly into your life by the revelation of the H.S. It s a precise word from God given to provide specific direction in your daily life. It s about hearing God. Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word (rhema) of God. Rm. 10:17 hupakouo is truth embraced and lived out. It is our response to logos and rhema it is what we do when God speaks we obey. The word means to hear under. And every time it is used in the N.T. it refers to responding in obedience to what has been spoken following orders. My sheep hear (akouo) my voice. I know them, and they follow me. Jn. 10:27 Oversimplified God gives us logos that we might KNOW Him, rhema that we might HEAR Him, calling us to hupakouo that we might OBEY Him. W/ this in mind, I think we re ready to delve into the idea of distinguishing God s voice amidst the other voices among us

A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered b/c they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a 100 times more than was sown. When he said this, he called out, Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear. His disciples asked him what this parable meant. He said, The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so, though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand. This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word (logos) of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear (akouo), and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word w/ joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop. Luke 8:4-15 Let me quickly remind you of the meaning of the parable.

The SOWER is Jesus who He came into the world to seek and to save the lost by speaking into the lives of people to help them discover God s love/grace. As the sower, He indiscriminately casts the truth of God in all directions to all people so that all men are w/out excuse. The SEED is the voice of God. It s the truth that God so loved the world that from the beginning (since the fall), He s been in a relentless pursuit of His people by following His Divine plan of redemption that culminated in Jesus dying on the Cross for our sins. It refers to how He continues to pursue us for relationship as He seeks to guide us in our pursuit of His will. It s logos and rhema leading us to a place of response hupoakouo. The SOILS represent the condition of the heart and ears. The footpath represents a SURFACE heart that s inattentive/hard b/c it s been trampled down by life. The bedrock represents a SHALLOW heart that s impulsive/susceptible to life b/c there is no depth. The thorny ground represents a STRANGLED heart that s preoccupied/indulgent w/ the cares of the world. The good soil represents a SURRENDERED heart that s open and involved w/ the leading of God.

Unfortunately, God s voice isn t the only voice in this world. You ll notice in the parable, for each soil condition there s also a competitor a competing voices vying to prevent the voice of God from taking root these are the other voices and they re in cahoots w/ each other. I The Voice of SATAN (Bird) In the parable, Jesus identifies Satan as the bird of the air who steals the seed of God s Word on the path. Satan enjoys nothing more than to whisper in your ear to turn your life away from God s purpose to anything that d occupy your life and disengage your pursuit of God s mission. This is temptation it s the voice of Satan to turn our attention from God s interest to self-interest. Take everything the Master has set out for you, well-made weapons of the best materials and put them to use so you will be able to stand up to the schemes and everything the Devil throws your way. This is no afternoon athletic contest that you will walk away from and forget about in a couple of hours. This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and all his fallen angels. Be prepared. You're up against far more than you can handle on your own. Take all the help you can get, every weapon God has issued, so that when it's all over but the shouting you'll still be on your feet. Ep. 6:10f

schemes (methodias) methods used to gain an upper hand. Satan uses subtle, crafty methods to trip us up. A He TEMPTS When tempted, no one should say, God is tempting me. For God can t be tempted by evil, nor does He tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they re dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Jm. 1:13-14 enticed fishing term to lure to hook. Satan casts out the bait of temptation to lure us away from God. He solicits our flesh to indulge itself so our actions might reflect his character. He wants us to act like him by defying God so we might misuse our humanity to deny God s glory. B He ACCUSES Not only does he tempt; he accuses us of being unworthy. The Bible says, He is the accuser of the brethren. He seeks to hold us captive to our shame/regret. C He BLINDS The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ. 2 Cr. 4:4

Bottomline any voice that seeks to steal, kill, and destroy by luring us away from God is the voice of Satan. PREVENT and PERVERT Salvation DISCREDIT and DISABLE Our Witness FLUSTER and FRUSTRATE God s Will II The Voice of SELF (Sun) The voice of self is the sinful nature w/in us we re born w/. It s the flesh that s self-centered, self-absorbed, and selfsufficient that seeks to STARVE the seed of God s voice. When you gave your life to God, God placed the H.S. w/in you to guide your life and to wage war w/ the flesh. In this instant, a war began. Battle-lines were drawn b/w God in you and your flesh. Gal. 5 says: the flesh sets its desires against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh, so you might not do the things you please. We most experience this voice in our natural human desires and in how our flesh longs to fulfill these desires. Whether good flesh or corrupt flesh; the priority of the flesh is self. All that s in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but of the world. 1 John 2:16

Lust of the Flesh Lust of the Eyes Pride of Life Personal GRATIFICATION Personal ASPIRATION Personal REPUTATION Point: Any voice that prioritizes your will, wants, and desires over God s heart/purposes need to be heavily scrutinized. III The Voice of SOCIETY (Thorns) The 3 rd voice we see in this parable is the voice of the world. Jesus likens the voice of this world w/ weeds and thorns that seek to STRANGLE His voice of truth. Everywhere we turn this voice is singing the praise of Satan while serenading the desires of self. From DC to Hollywood and from Madison Ave. to Rodeo Dr. we re being told what to wear, how to think, and what to pursue in life. And seldom if ever do we find that the ways of the world are moving in the direction of God. Suffice to say if the voice you hear beckoning you is to have more pride, create more power, assume more prestige, obtain more possessions, or gratify more pleasures then absolutely, you re hearing the voice of the world. So there you have it (3) competing voices working together to drown out the Savior s voice voices determined to confuse the truth and cram us into their mold.

IV The Voice of the SAVIOR Whereas all the other voices are self-serving God s voice is others serving. Whereas the other voices are consumed w/ the things of earth; God s voice is concerned about the things of heaven and earth. God speaks to SAVE us God speaks to KNOW us God speaks to GUIDE us God speaks to EMPOWER us God speaks to INSPIRE us God speaks to INVOLVE us Hearing God begins w/ a greater desire for His plan to be accomplished than for you plans to be fulfilled. The key is getting on the right frequency. Funny a few years ago when I taught on this topic I dialed into the wrong frequency and the song was I m on a Highway to Hell. To hear God requires an ability to distinguish when it s God and when it is not. Close: I Am God by Deo Volente Media
