African Methodist Episcopal Church Fifth Episcopal District Lay Organization Awards Program Guidelines 2015 Pacific Northwest Conference Local Churches Outstanding Pastor Award: Outstanding Pastor Award This award is given to a Pastor who through his/her leadership has made a significant impact, recognized for their contributions and has built a relationship within the congregation in the church and the surrounding community through his/her ministries and his/her service. The pastor has contributed to the welfare of his/her members by providing spiritual leadership and guidance. The pastor is available for individual sessions, and/or consultations for the members of the congregation. The pastor communicates with members and their families during time of bereavement in others words the pastor is available at all times. Describe the pastor s major achievements and accomplishments in the church and surrounding communities Demonstrates faithful service to the church of Richard Allen Demonstrates an understanding of the Book of Disciplines for the African Methodist Episcopal Church Demonstrates a diligent attitude in carrying out the duties in his/her church as set forth by the Book of Disciplines for the African Methodist Episcopal Church Demonstrates active support of the Local Lay Organization s programs and activities Please list specific reasons why the nominee should be considered for this award by considering these categories of descriptions for each of the following sections: 1. Major achievements of the nominee. Please highlight no more than 4-6 achievements in addition to accomplishments of what the nominee has executed at the church or in the community during the past two conference years and refrain from including any conference, district or connectional offices since the main focus should be at the local church level and the local community only. 2. Describe how the nominee has demonstrated his/her commitment to the values of African Methodist Episcopal Church. Does the nominee incorporate into his/her teachings of the history and traditions of the AME Church? Does the nominee establish and confirm the compliance s of the AME Book of Discipline? Does the nominee demonstrate enthusiasm and love for the gospel and the AME Church? Does the nominee connect his/her sermons to include teaching tool of reading the Bible as well as focus scriptural reference points? 3. Describe how the nominee has demonstrated his/her commitment to the support of the Local Lay Organization. Does the nominee support the Local Lay President in addition to the activities and programs of the Local Lay Organization and the Conference Lay Organization? Does the nominee encourage the laity of the church to get involved with the organized body of lay members? 1

4. Describe the impact of the nominee s achievements and/or contributions as it relates to the nominee s church. What difference has the nominee made in leading the church, how has his/her leadership influenced local church growth, how has his/her leadership positively affected the community and where there any improvement to the church under his/her leadership (you may include any debts under this section)? 5. How does the nominee incorporate evangelism into the ministry of the church? Have any members decided to become a ministry or evangelist under his/her administration of leadership? Has the evangelizing of the congregation been a main focal point under his/her leadership in essence to bring members closer to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ? 1. (10 Points) Timeline Update for Conference Representative only: Present the 5 th District Lay Award 2015 Program Guidelines to Conference Presidents at 2014 Lay Convention on 7/30/14-8/2/14. First reminder on 8/20/14 to see if award 2015 program guidelines has been disbursed to local churches in each conference. Second reminder on 9/1/14 with an update of nominations from local churches in each conference. Deadline date is 9/15/14 of local churches to submit nominees names to each conference representatives for them to get their judging committee together to implement the judging process. Deadline date to submit your conference finalist is December 14, 2014 to Deborah Bowen-Lee. Deborah Bowmen-Lee will make copies of all nominations in each category and mail a packet with the judging sheet to each of the six conference representatives by December 28, 2014. Deadline date is January 18, 2015 to return their finalist name in each category to Deborah Bowen- Lee. 2

Application Guidelines: A completed nomination package includes: Application Nomination Form Supporting documentation (pages 2, 3 & 4 if necessary) you can make copies for your records since the nomination documents will not be returned to your conference. Must have signatures of Local Lay President and Local Lay Conference Representative, if you have both. Conference President and Conference Representative will decide the deadline date for all application nomination forms and supporting documents to be turned in to the Pacific Northwest Conference Lay Organization Representative. Please send all nomination forms and supporting documents to: Mary Scott 10729 63 rd Avenue South Seattle, Wa. 98178 (206) 722-4358 (H) Then Conference Representative will be responsible for judging all of the nomination supporting documents using the judging criteria with his/her committee of at least seven or less, but should be an odd number of judges at the conference level before being submitted all documents to 5 th District Lay Chair. Other Award Categories and Descriptions will follow the same judging guideline procedures Outstanding Layperson Award: Outstanding Layperson Award is presented by the Lay Organization to confer special honor upon lay members who have made distinguished contribution to the organization through their individual commitment, responsibilities, dependability, accountability, efforts and talents at their local church, on the Conference level and on the 5 th District Lay Organization. An active member of a Local Lay Organization An understanding of Christian faith and the AME Church Book of Discipline An ability to motivate members through lay training activities by being dependable and showing accountability An authentic, dedicated and commitment to the Local Lay Organization, the Conference Lay Organization and 5 th District Lay Organization An active member of a Local Lay Organization. (25 points) An understanding of Christian faith and the AME Church Book of Discipline. (20 Points) An ability to motivate members through lay training activities by being dependable and showing accountability. (35 Points) An authentic, dedicated and commitment to the Local Lay Organization and the Conference Lay Organization. (20 Points) J. D. Williams Award J. D. Williams, who is deceased, was a role model for the laity. He served as Connectional President and mentored many officers throughout the Connectional Church that is the reason why this award is presented in his name. J. D. Williams Award honors lay members who demonstrate a lifetime of devotion to the Lay Organization. Their devotion and influence spreads across the entire Fifth District and helps to advance the ideas and goals of the Local Lay Organization, the Conference Lay Organization and the Connectional Lay Organization. An active member of a Local Lay Organization for at least 15 years An active member at the Conference and District levels of the church. Demonstrated a lasting contribution benefiting the entire Lay Organization Demonstrates the ability to spread their commitment throughout the Connectional Church and has attend at least two Biennial Conventions An active member of a Local Lay Organization for at least 15 years. Demonstrates the ability to spread their commitment throughout the Connectional Church by attending at least two Biennial Conventions. (10 Points) Evangelism Award Evangelism Award recognizes a member who has influenced the lives of others through their Christian evangelism ministry and can not be a minister or licensed evangelist of the local church since that is what he/she duties are anyway. An active member of an A.M.E. Church Exhibits knowledge of the Holy Scriptures through academic, seminar and evangelistic training through the reading of the Bible Through their ministry people are impacted and return to church Through their ministry people accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior An active member of an A.M.E. Church. (25 points) Exhibits knowledge of the Holy Scriptures through academic, seminar and evangelistic training. (30 Points) Through their ministry people are impacted and return to church. (20 Points) President s Circle Award President s Circle Award is given to Local Lay President who has demonstrated a level of service commitment, integrity and leadership in the Local Lay Organization that warrants this special recognition. A Local Lay Organization President for at least two Conference years An active participant along with their members in the Conference Lay Organization Attend at least one District Convention Have lay programs and activities that impact the entire church membership An active member of an A.M.E. Church. (25 points) Exhibits knowledge of the Holy Scriptures through academic, seminar and evangelistic training. (30 Points) Through their ministry people are impacted and return to church. (20 Points) Community Service Award Community Service Award recognizes an individual whom has made significant contribution in their community whether political or social. Your community service work should involve what you are doing in your community in addition to how you are serving others and not based solely on your employment history. 6

(25 points) Outstanding Young Adult Representative Award Outstanding Young Adult Representative Award is presented by the Lay Organization to confer special honor upon a Lay Young Adult Person starting at age eighteen to the age of thirty who has made distinguished contribution to the organization through their individual commitment, responsibilities, dependability, accountability, efforts and talents at their local church and on the Conference level by bring other young people to join the organized Lay Organization. An active member of a Local Lay Organization between the ages of 18 and 30 Describe how your life has been enriched by being a young person in the organize lay How have you impacted the life of other young people to join and be a part of your local lay organization in your church and/or on the conference level An authentic, dedicated and commitment to the Local Lay Organization, the Conference Lay Organization and to include the 5 th District Lay Organization An active member of a Local Lay Organization. (10 Points) Dr. Jamye Coleman Williams Award: Dr. Jamye Coleman Williams is an extraordinary lay person of the A.M.E. Church. Through her brilliance and capable leadership the laity has progressed and accomplished recognition towards higher heights that involve the implantation of legislation being passed with her assistance during General Conferences of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. Dr. Jamye Coleman Williams Award is presented to honor a person of the organized lay for exceptional training of the laity by using methods consistent with the goal and objectives as stated in the Connectional Lay Organization s Constitution & Bylaws in addition to showing accountability and respect towards the purpose, objectives and guidelines by assisting in training the youth and young adults for leadership within our great Zion towards becoming great leaders working with the organized lay leadership on all levels of the church. 7
