IMPORTANT REMINDER PARISH GENERAL ASSEMBLIES All are encouraged to attend Monday, May 4 7:00 P.M. At Most Holy Name School Hall & Thursday, May 7 7:00 P.M. At St. Aloysius Parish Social Hall The General Assemblies are structured to get input from all members of the parish communities as an initial step to develop a Pastoral Plan. The Pastoral Plan is a written document, shared with parishioners, which states goals and objectives organized around each of the five essential qualities of parish life: Eucharist, Evangelization, Catechesis, Formation, and Stewardship. Committees will be formed to execute the objectives. During the General Assemblies, suggestions will be collected to identify objectives within the five qualities. For example, the objectives might be ministries, prayer activities, outreach, or education. Have you heard something that another parish does and think we might start at our parishes? This is YOUR opportunity to voice those ideas. If you are unable to attend the Assembly scheduled at your home parish, please attend the other parish meeting. Special Collection for Earthquake Relief Bishop David Zubik has called for a special collection next weekend, May 9 & 10, for Catholic Relief Services (CRS), who has deployed experienced emergency staff on the ground in Kathmandu and are working closely with local partners to provide emergency shelter, and other necessities. The lack of drinking water is a major concern. CRS will distribute hygiene kits that include a water jug, pail with cover, and water purifying treatments. Mass Attendance April 25 & 26 Saturday: 271 Sunday: 333 Total attendance at both churches: 604 From the Desk of Fr. Jim Well I m aware that there s a buzz about the upcoming General Assemblies of the Parishes. As you see in this week s announcement, it s about gathering ideas for the Pastoral Plan for the Parishes. The Bishop s initiative On Mission for the Church Alive recognizes that with the increasing shortage of priests, we need to create a way of being parish that includes closer co-operation with other parishes ultimately all the parishes in our cluster: our two parishes and the two in Millvale. Right now, we are getting a jump on the process for our two parishes by this Pastoral planning process which comes directly out of the Diocesan document One Body, One Mission. I hope to see you at one of the two Assemblies. Our new Mission Statement reflects the hopes of the Planning process and will guide the outcome of the Pastoral Plan. On to something less happy...we have begun the Budget process to develop the Budgets for the parishes that start July 1st. One reality that is apparent at MHN is that collections have gone down between 8-12 thousand per year for at least the last 5 years. This year is already showing about a $3700 deficit in income. We know that there will be about a $7800 plus inflation increase in expenses. Much of the loss of income is from deaths, people moving in with family or nursing homes and the like. You are giving sacrificially, I know. Your generosity gives you much credit. I can t ask you to give more so we need to cut expenses at both parishes. Some are going to be easy others will be much more difficult. What all of these will look like I don t know. One that we can do immediately is starting now gifts that have been giving after Masses on different occasions will no longer be possible. Given the historic nature of the St. Nicholas observance at MHN, that one will continue, but all others will stop. That will save us about $800 per year. Small cuts like this will be the easy cuts. We will be looking at others that may be much harder. What these will be has yet to be determined. Pray for the Finance Committees and myself, that we can make prudent decisions about the budget. Placing the future in God s hands and trusting in His providence, I am: Fr. Jim

The St. Aloysius Stained Glass Windows Nick Parrendo, artist and owner of Hunt Stained Glass, recently spoke to the Christian Mothers about our new stained glass windows on the front of our church building. One of the ladies suggested we share the meaning of our windows with the parishioners so we are presenting the theme of our new windows once again. Nick put a lot of thought into choosing the theme The Eucharist and Sharing when he designed our new stained glass windows. Several thoughts come to mind when we think of that theme. One thought is that the Gift of God in the Eucharist is our model for giving and sharing with each other. The four murals depict bread broken and shared by all. The bread or the hosts (the circles on the murals) also represent the four Evangelists. When we receive the Eucharist it enlightens us with the Gift of Good News from Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The nourishment we receive enables us to share The Good News with others. Receiving the Eucharist often helps us to maintain a spiritual quality of joy even through problems in our lives. The stained glass window of St. Aloysius is above the door as we come into church in the presence of the Lord. The sheaves of wheat and the purple grapes surrounding the wheat show our intimate relationship with God Body and Blood (wheat and grapes). We are filled with the Holy Spirit represented by the dove window. The fish are a traditional symbol of the early Church.

Fifth Sunday of Easter May 3, 2015 A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar - Like the vine grower in today s gospel, parents must prune and cleanse the branches in their family if their children are going to be rooted. Discipline, limits and setting goals are a necessary part of parenting so our children will grow and bear fruit. St. Vincent de Paul Society - In the Gospel today, Jesus says Whoever remains in me and I in him will bear much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. Indeed, by helping the poor we can bear much fruit and we find that with Jesus we can do everything. Your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will show that you are indeed the disciple of Jesus as it will bring your love to those who live in fear and doubt, loneliness and dread.
