St. Andrew s in the Pines Episcopal Parish Profile

WHO WE ARE St. Andrew s is a vibrant, diverse community of people in Peachtree City, Georgia who are united as one body in Christ as we seek to serve God together in faith, hope, and love. Worship is central in our common life when we come together to pray, hear the Word of God, sing, give thanks, and receive the Holy Communion. We thrive on the fellowship of fellow parishioners and invite everyone to join our spiritual community. We value educational opportunities for all ages as we are all learners and are seeking a deeper relationship with Christ in our lives. Our Holy Cow Survey responses, based on 98% of our average attendance, provided our top three priorities below: 1. Make necessary changes to attract families with children and youth to our church. 2. Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to reach new people and incorporate them into the life of the Church. 3. Provide more opportunities for Christian education and spiritual formation at every age and stage of life. 2

WHO WE SEEK A spiritual leader as Rector who will provide parishioners with meaningful, relevant worship experiences A rector who shares our passion for liturgy A communicator who is outgoing and has the ability/desire to relate to parishioners of all ages and from all walks of life A minister who brings strength and vitality to our parish An advocate of Christian formation and educational opportunities for all ages A pastor who shepherds our parishioners as a caregiver, healer, protector and encourager A rector who is the team mentor who values the lay leadership of St. Andrew s and understands the talent and depth of dedication and commitment of the lay leaders/ volunteers A visionary who fosters opportunities for newcomers to become involved in parish activities A priest who will join us in our journey of faith that God has already begun 3

THE DIOCESE OF ATLANTA The Diocese of Atlanta is a vibrant, diverse, and expansive faith community, with 114 different communities focused on worshiping a living and loving God and working for a better world in the name of Jesus Christ. There are some 50,000 members in nearly 25,000 households in the 10 convocations that make up the diocese. Our Diocesan Purpose Statement, adopted at Annual Council 2015, informs all aspects of our common life: We challenge ourselves and the world to love like Jesus as we worship joyfully, serve compassionately, and grow spiritually. We are a Christian community blessed with vibrancy, variety, and vitality. Our diocesan bishop is the Right Rev. Robert C. Wright, who was elected by the diocese in June 2012 and then ordained and consecrated Oct. 13, 2012. The Right Rev. Don A. Wimberly assists Bishop Wright in visitations. The Offices of the Bishop are at the Cathedral of St. Philip in Atlanta. We have more than 200 clergy who are under Bishop Wright s oversight, and nearly as many who come from other dioceses, plus an abundant supply of lay ministers. The Diocese of Atlanta was created in 1907 and carved from the Diocese of Georgia. As part of The Episcopal Church, the Diocese of Atlanta is connected to the worldwide Anglican Communion of 70 million people in 38 provinces. We engage in special companion relationships with several dioceses in Africa and South America. The Diocese of Atlanta actively supports the ministry of The Episcopal Church and its presiding bishop, the Most Reverend Michael Curry. We challenge ourselves and the world to love like Jesus as we worship joyfully, serve compassionately, and grow spiritually. Our Website is: www.episcopalatlanta.org Bishop Robert Wright 4

LITURGICAL WORSHIP Acolytes, Altar Guild, Eucharistic Ministers, Eucharistic Visitors, Flower Guild, Greeters, Parish Choir, Ushers, and Vergers Worship is central in our common life together. Every Wednesday and Sunday we gather to pray, hear the Word of God, sing, give thanks, and receive the Holy Eucharist. Our worship services unite us as one body in Christ and are intended to feed and sustain us corporately as well as individually. At St. Andrew s, as in all Episcopal Churches, all baptized Christians are welcome and encouraged to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion, attend weekly Eucharist, and pray daily. 5

CHRISTIAN FORMATION Children s Chapel, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Journey to Adulthood, Christian Formation for Adults Christian Formation supports, clarifies, and strengthens our understanding of worship and service to Jesus Christ. St. Andrew s is a community of learners exploring all aspects of God s presence in their lives as they seek to build lives of discipleship. We are seeking a deeper relationship with God in Christ and we invite all to join us on this journey. Christian Formation for adults, youth and children is offered throughout the school year. 6

KOINONIA Daughters of the King, Brotherhood of St. Andrew, Prayer Shawl Ministry, Bouquet Buddies, Spiritual Direction, Newcomers Ministry, Healing Hands, Wednesday Night Suppers (WNS), Words and Wine Book Club, and Building and Grounds Team Fellowship is an important aspect of our community. Our beautiful Parish Hall is where we greet one another following the Sunday services for coffee hour, and after the six o clock Eucharist on Wednesday evenings for a parish supper. The Parish Hall and the Formation Center is also where many groups from within the larger community meet. Through worship we are fed with Holy food, through education we are strengthened, through fellowship we are connected, and through prayer we are comforted. 7

PASSIONATE OUTREACH Alcoholics Anonymous, Fayette Samaritans, Good Works Crew, Overeaters Anonymous, United Thank Offering, Joshua s Gifts and our Outreach Committee Outreach to the community and the world is a vital part of our mission and ministry. We love like Jesus as we partner with missions. Our prayer and presence with those in pain, sorrow, distress or fear remind us that while we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ that He is the healer and we all need His healing grace. The word of Christ beseeches us to reach out beyond our walls to others in our community and the world. 8

HISTORY OF ST. ANDREW S 1970s 1980s 1990s 2000s 2010s St. Andrew s in the Pines was founded in the summer of 1976 by a group of 28 Episcopalians who met in a classroom at the Peachtree Elementary School. Rev. Jack McKee led the church during this period. During this time the first Vestry was elected and the current eight acre site of St. Andrew s was purchased. By the end of the summer we had grown, and the meeting place was moved to the gazebo at the McIntosh Amphitheater complex. In October 1980, St. Andrew s broke ground on a 3600 square foot utilitarian 2 story building with classrooms on the lower level and the sanctuary with a capacity for 160 people on the main level. At this time, Vicar William Bradbury was leading the congregation. The building was completed June 1981. In 1983, St. Andrew s was accepted by the diocese as a fullfledged parish and the Rev. Dan Brigham became the church s first rector. In 1992, construction on both the upper/lower levels began in order to extend the original building. The new sanctuary at St. Andrew s was dedicated on the Feast of Pentecost, June 6, 1993. The congregation had grown to 300 families by this time. A pre-school was added in 1994 which increased the growth of the Parish. By the end of 1999, St. Andrew s had grown to 400 families and had added an Associate Rector and held multiple services each Saturday and Sunday. By 2003, the relationship with the Diocese became fractured. The Bishop was informed by the rector that he was not welcome at St. Andrew s. There were no Episcopal visits for five years. During that time, the Vestry and rector of St. Andrew s made plans to leave the Protestant Episcopal Church of the USA and associate with a more conservative branch of the Anglican Church. This was a very difficult time for everyone involved. In 2008, Rev. Paul Elliott became the rector after the ownership of the church was settled. The first few years in 2010s were hard financially, but the Bishop was extremely helpful as St. Andrew s renewed and strengthened its association with the diocese and moved forward to a more secure and inclusive future. This parish has the capacity to do amazing things. Across our congregation, there is a sense of determination to fully realize the true potential of Christ s ministry in our community and the world. After serving St. Andrew s for almost ten years, Fr. Elliott decided to leave St. Andrew s in 2017. 9
