Nativity of Saint John the Baptist June 24, 2018 "Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet." --Acts 13:25 Missionary Cooperation Appeal Dear Fr Peter, Fr. Bill, Fr. Billy, and Brothers and Sisters in Christ of Mission San Diego de Alcalá Parish, I want to sincerely offer thanks for your hospitality, generosity and prayers offered for our mission work in Northern Alaska. As I shared, we have 46 parishes in a very remote region in an Arctic environment. The vast majority of these parishes are far below the poverty level as the Native Alaskan peoples live off the fruits of the land and sea. Your generosity will help us continue our mission to the remote parishes in the Diocese of Fairbanks that covers 410K square miles (2.5 times the size of California). Many of these villages are only able to experience Mass once every 6-8 weeks. Your financial assistance will pay for the expensive travel in small aircraft to these locations as our priests and religious serve the good people of God in Northern Alaska. What a joy and honor to celebrate Mass at the Mission Church knowing I walked among the sacred footprints of St. Junípero Serra. Be assured of my Mass intentions and prayers for your families. It was a great joy to chat with many of you following Mass. Let us keep one another in prayer! Sincerely in Christ, Bishop Chad Zielinski and Deacon Les Maiman Bishop of Northern Alaska, Diocese of Fairbanks After many years of faithful service as a member of the Mission Choir, Cantor and Cantor coordinator, Martha Conway is retiring. In appreciation for her years of dedication, a reception will be held June 30 in the Rose Garden and La Sala after the 5:30 pm Saturday Mass. Join the Mission Young Adult Group and grow deeper in your faith and friendships! It s never too late to join the group. Check the Young Adults Facebook page for more details or the link on the Mission s website. Socials are posted there. June 27 Bible Study in Fr. For more information, please contact Carol at 619-624-0900 or dre@missionsandiego.org. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION in LA CAPILLA 1st Friday, July 6, 9 am 5 pm 1st Saturday, July 7, 7:30 9:30 am Jesus asked His Apostles, Can you spend one hour with Me? Is He asking you that question? Call the Parish Office to volunteer. Benediction Friday, July 6 5pm Mission Church Missionary Cooperation Plan Appeal Bishop Chad Zielinski explained last weekend that he faces the challenging task of shepherding the largest geographic diocese in the United States with only 17 priests, compounded by Alaska s vast distances and the isolation of the Catholic communities from access to roads. Amongst the poorest dioceses in the nation, only 8 of its 46 parishes and missions are capable of financial self-support. Bishop Zielinski shared the site story of the Catholics living in the missions of Northern Alaska, and invite our prayerful consideration in helping him provide for the proper pastoral and sacramental care of our far northern sisters and brothers. Envelopes are in the pews for your convenience. TASTE OF THE MISSION FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14 Save the date for our annual Taste of the Mission fundraiser! Last year we sold out a week before the event so get your tickets early. Ticket Sales begin at Festival of the Bells, July 14 and 15 come by our booth for special Festival pricing. JOHN THE BAPTIST Since June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the precursor of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John s basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John s legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory (Isaiah 49:3). John s humility I am not he was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. Copyright J. S.
