For us today all of the law and the prophets come to fulfillment in Moses and Elijah. They point to Jesus who shines as the key to our share in the covenant. By his broken body in the Eucharist we, too, will be transfigured. The divine fire nourishes and changes us into citizens of our homeland in heaven. We eat the Eucharistic Christ Jesus, who is our passport to heaven. Do we dare take part? Text, Philip J. Sandstrom, STD 2000, OCP. All rights reserved. Holy Trinity-Bandon Sat. From the Desk of Father George Kuforiji Philippians 3:17-4:1 By Fr. Damien Dougherty, O.F.M. Paul has just demonstrated that he, in contrast to the Judaizers, places his entire trust in the salvation and righteousness only to be found in Christ, and, now, he recommends this same confidence to the faithful and underscores two practical ramifications: they are not to imitate the enemies of the cross; rather, they are to live a heavenly life. He begins by contrasting those who are spiritually mature and truly wise to those who may not have completely understood his teaching and prays that the latter group will have their eyes opened and enlightened. Furthermore, he urges them all that they walk together, united like a phalanx, within this comprehension. The disciples are to imitate those who are good and not those who give bad example who, by their conduct, demonstrate themselves to be the enemies of the cross of Christ. At this juncture, Paul is not directing his attention, particularly, to the Judaizing party; rather, he is discussing those Christians who have lapsed into immoral behavior who, instead, are worshiping their own deity and i.e., the passions. Such laxity will lead, inevitably, to eternal perdition. He now opposes the behavior of the enemies of the cross to the comportment of the true Christians by stressing their ultimate destiny as citizens of heaven. As that will constitute their final inheritance, the faithful disciples already are living a heavenly existence as they await Christ's return and, hence, enjoy the benefits to be derived from that membership: security, peace, joy, family life. 2004, OCP. All rights reserved. By Deacon Owen Cummings Luke 9:28b-36 At his baptism Jesus begins his ministry in prayer [Luke 3.21ff]. His ministry will end in prayer, both in the garden of Gethsemane [22.39-46] and on the cross [23.34, 46]. In today's story of the transfiguration --- as our Lord ends his ministry in the Galilee and begins his journey towards Jerusalem --- he went up the mountain to pray. As the Son in constant communion with his Father in prayer, Jesus models for us, daughters and sons in this Son, how our lives should be. His face changed as he faces his Father in the communion of prayer. His face-facing-god shines, like the description of Moses' face in Ex. 39.24. He is in conversation with Moses and Elijah, as he interprets his mission through the Torah and the Prophets. Peter, James and John "saw his glory." They caught a glimpse of his divinity. The cloud, a classic symbol of God's transcendent being, overshadows Jesus, Moses and Elijah, but as they enter the cloud the Father's voice says of Jesus alone, "This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to him." We too are daughters and sons in the Son, the Chosen One, if "we listen to him." Our listening is not a mere, physical hearing but our being configured or shaped to Christ, or better our being transfigured into him in and through every aspect of our being. 2003, OCP.
