Welcome Bishop Barres by Father Michael On Tuesday afternoon at St. Agnes Cathedral, in the midst of a passing snow squall, Bishop John Barres was installed as the fifth Bishop in the history of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. Prior to this new assignment, he served as the Bishop in Allentown, PA. Cardinal Dolan began the Mass. Immediately after that the Papal Nuncio, Christophe Pierre, read the Pope s Letter of Appointment. After that the Papal Nuncio and the Cardinal escorted him to the Bishop s chair. At that moment, he assumed the role of being chief shepherd to the people of Long Island. There was a great sense of excitement and enthusiasm. In his homily Mass he made a request to all those who regularly attend Mass. He asked each person to reach out to someone you know, who may be a fallen away Catholic, and invite them to return to the Eucharist. He asked this invitation be done between now and Ash Wednesday. This simple invitation might be an opportunity for someone who has been away to be welcomed back. Please pray about someone in your life to whom you could extend this invitation. Who knows how the Spirit might be at work through your conversation with them. Bishop Barres wants to meet as many people as possible as well as visit the many parishes in our Diocese. He is beginning by visiting each Deanery (small clusters of parishes) within his first few weeks. The first opportunity for him to meet with our deanery will be on Tuesday, March 7. He will be saying the 12:10 PM Mass at St. Patrick s Church in Smithtown. He wants to use this opportunity to begin to know the faithful people of the Diocese. All are welcome to attend. In the past few weeks, we have had a disproportionately high number of funerals. In 2016 we had a total of 35 funerals; averaging about three a month. So far this year, we have already had seven. There are many helping hands that are required to make everything run smoothly. Deacon Ralph leads the Wake Services. Consolation Ministers meet with the family. Our maintenance staff and sacristans prepare the church. Our music ministry is present at each Mass. Thank you to all who assist families at this difficult time in their lives. Last weekend, Fr. Jim McNamara made an announcement to his parish in Point Lookout. He has accepted an invitation to become Spiritual Director for the seminarians at the North American College in Rome. This is a ministry that is very dear to Fr. Jim. While he looks forward to this new chapter in his priesthood, it means a transition of leaving parish ministry and moving to Rome. This transfer will take place in June. We wish Fr. Jim well and trust that he will do great work in this new assignment. Congratulations! 3
