PAGE TWO YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ YÜÉÅ à{x ctáàéüëá Wxá~ On this weekend right before Lent there is always a lot of material to squeeze into this ar cle, so let me get right to it. The 40-day season of Lent begins this week with Ash Wednesday on Feb. 14 th. As I men oned last week, the Archdiocese stated that a dispensa on for the requirement of fas ng and abs nence on Ash Wednesday will not be given, even though Ash Wednesday falls on Valen ne s Day this year. There will be no dispensa on because the solemn day of penance (Ash Wednesday) takes priority over the secular holiday (Valen ne s Day). So, on this Wednesday all Catholics over the age of 13 are required to abstain from meat, and all Catholics age 18-59 are required to fast (only one full meal allowed). And of course, I hope you can join us for Mass on Wednesday to begin the holy season of Lent. Masses on Ash Wednesday will be at 8:30am, 12:00pm and 7:00pm. During this season I also invite you to par cipate in the tradi onal Lenten devo on of praying the Sta ons of the Cross. We will pray the Sta ons of the Cross every Friday during Lent at 7:00pm in church, following by Eucharis c Benedic on, beginning on Feb. 16 th. I hope you can join us for this important part of our Lenten journey. And be sure you get your Lenten season off to a great start by making me to a end our 2018 Lenten Mission en tled, Open Your Heart to the Lord, from Feb. 18-21 at 7:00pm. This year we will be combining with three of the four other parishes in our Renew My Church grouping. So, the first night will take place at St. Maria Gore, followed by Divine Savior, followed by Our Lady Mother of the Church, and we will host the final night. Our mission speaker is Fr. Bri o Berchmans. He is the pastor of St. Paul of the Cross Parish in Park Ridge. He is also a well-known and experienced mission/retreat speaker, and he holds degrees in physics, journalism, theology, and mass communica ons. Fr. Bri o also performs a comedy rou ne known as Holy Smokes! and he hosts a monthly Catholic radio talk show en tled Built on the Rock, which focuses on Christ-centered marriages and rela onships. It promises to be a great mission, so I hope you can join us for some or all of the evenings as we begin our 40-day Lenten journey. I also want to let everyone know that on Saturday, Feb. 10 th, our Religious Educa on students in 2 nd Grade and Special Sacraments class celebrated their First Reconcilia on. This is a very important event in their young lives, especially as they prepare to receive their First Holy Communion this upcoming May. Please pray for them and their families during this important year in their lives (the students names are listed in this bulle n). I hope that their recep on of this sacrament will inspire not only their family members and friends, but that it will also inspire all of us to take advantage of this wonderful sacrament, especially in the upcoming Lenten season. And so, I say to adults the same thing that I say to children: don t let your First Reconcilia on be your Last Reconcilia on. Take advantage of this beau ful sacrament. Some of the most powerful words that we will ever hear God speak to us on earth are: I absolve you from your sins. Finally, if you missed the Commitment Weekend for the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal last weekend, please know that you can s ll make a pledge to this year-long Appeal, and your pledge is most definitely needed to support not only the Chicago Archdiocese s ministries, but also your parish of St. Beatrice. Our goal for this year s Appeal is $16,942, and every dollar that we collect beyond that goal comes back to us. And please remember that your pledge can be paid off over an en re year. Addi onally, you can always make a dona on any me online. Go to our parish website at www.stbeatriceparish.org, scroll to the bo om, and you we see the link to click on for the Annual Catholic Appeal. Your generosity is much appreciated, and much needed. St. Beatrice, pray for us. May God bless you. Fr. Rob

PAGE THREE Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time In the Gospel today Jesus moved with pity touched the leper and healed him. Let us pray today for the grace to be generous with our gifts to help those who are suffering. By your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you indeed put your faith into action as you bring healing to the poor, hungry and weeping. In Hawaii, the bacterium that causes leprosy probably entered from China in the mid-1800s, and the native islanders were susceptible to the dreaded disease. In 1866, the government literally dumped the sufferers on a remote and virtually inaccessible island peninsula with towering cliffs. Thrown off ships into the sea, the sick people were told to swim for the beach and head for caves, and for seven years the only supplies were similarly cast into the sea to drift ashore. It was then, 1873, that a thirty-three-year-old Belgian priest, Damien de Veuster, went voluntarily to Kalaupapa. Before long, he cajoled the government into funding his mission and its hospital, built a village with proper homes and sanitation, and recruited Mother Marianne Cope to bring sisters from Syracuse, New York, to nurse the sick. Damien, who eventually died of leprosy, has been canonized, and Mother Marianne as well. Although leprosy has been curable since the 1940s, today a few patients remain in their lifelong home, now a national historic site. The peninsula is still utterly isolated from the outside world, and the speed limit for the few cars there is 5 mph since there s nowhere to go! The hospital is still well-staffed and equipped, but access is regulated and visitors must take an official tour, often involving a descent down the cliffs by Molakai mule. There are few places on earth that evoke the healing power of Jesus, or our call to follow the Healer, more than Damien s beloved island mission. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. PAGE SEVEN 2018 Lenten Mission Open Your Heart to the Lord With our Renew My Church parish group Speaker: Fr. Britto Berchmans Sunday, February 18 at St. Maria Goretti 7:00pm Love Scripts: How to Read God s Handwriting Monday, February 19 at Divine Savior 7:00pm Discipleship: Personal Relationship to Jesus Christ Tuesday, February 20 at Our Lady Mother of the Church 7:00pm Prayer: Getting in Touch with the God Within Wednesday, February 21 at St. Beatrice 7:00pm Rejoicing: Happiness and Fulfillment in Life Ash Wednesday Announcement This year, the largely secular celebration of Valentine's Day (February 14) coincides with Ash Wednesday and some have inquired if a dispensation from the obligations to fast and abstain from meat will be given. Catholics throughout the world recognize Ash Wednesday as the solemn beginning of a period of prayerful reflection and penance, as is evident by the large number of church goers on this day. In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday the obligation of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community. Valentine's Day can appropriately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a traditionally festive time before beginning our Lenten observance.
