Message: King and Country Text: Psalms 33, 2, and 46 Teacher: Bob Cargo Date: 23/24 April 2016 Jeremiah 29:4-7 4 This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: 5 Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. 6 Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. 7 Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper. Mark 12:17 (KJV) 17 And Jesus answering said unto them, render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. I Timothy 2:1-4 1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. Romans 13:1-7 1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.

4 For he is God s servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God s servants, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. 6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Today s Thesis: The Kingdom of Jesus is to have our highest allegiance, provides our ultimate hope and security; and we carry out our responsibilities as citizens of any earthly nation in light of His Kingdom. 1. Jesus and Our Hope. The Kingdom of Jesus is Our Ultimate Hope. Ps. 33:1-3 1 Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him. 2 Praise the LORD with the harp; make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre. 3 Sing to him a new song; play skillfully, and shout for joy. Ps. 33:8, 10-12 8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him. 10 The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. 11 But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations. 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people he chose for his inheritance.

Ps. 33:16-18, 20-22 16 No king is saved by the size of his army; no warrior escapes by his great strength. 17 A horse is a vain hope for deliverance; despite all its great strength it cannot save. 18 But the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, 20 We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. 21 In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. 22 May your unfailing love be with us, LORD, even as we put our hope in you. Romans 15: 13 (NASB) 13 Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:12 (NASB) There shall come the root of Jesse, And He who arises to rule over the Gentiles, In Him shall the Gentiles hope. Romans 15:7-9 7 Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God. 8 For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the Jews on behalf of God s truth, to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs, 9 so that the Gentiles may glorify God for His mercy; 2. Jesus and Our Allegiance. The Kingdom of Jesus Demands Our Highest Allegiance.

Ps. 2:1-7 1 Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One 3 Let us break their chains, they say and throw off their fetters. 4 The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, 6 I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill. 7 I will proclaim the decree of the Lord: He said to me, You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Ps. 2:8, 10-12 a&c 8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. 10 Therefore, you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. 12 Kiss the Son Blessed are all who take refuge in him. Why Our Allegiance? His Sovereign Judgment His Gospel of Grace

Acts 4:25-28 The King s Crucifixion 25 You spoke by the Holy Spirit through the mouth of your servant, our father David: Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? 26 The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the Lord and against his Anointed One. 27 Indeed Herod and Pontius Pilate met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed. 28 They did what your power and will had decided beforehand should happen. Acts 13: 26. 32-33 The King s Resurrection 26 Brothers, children of Abraham and you God-fearing Gentiles, it is to us that this message of salvation has been sent. 32 We tell you the good news: What God promised our fathers 33 he has fulfilled for us, their children, by raising up Jesus. As it is written in the second Psalm: You are my son; today I have become your father. 3. Jesus and Our Security. The Kingdom of Jesus Provides Our Strongest Security. Ps. 46:1-11 1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. 7 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. 8 Come and see the works of the LORD,

the desolations he has brought on the earth. 9 He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. 10 Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. 11 The LORD Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. Ps. 46:4 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. Rev. 22:1-2 1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. John 7:37-39a 37 On the last and greatest day of the Feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. 39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive.
