Chapter 2 INDIVIDUAL RULE: GOD S RULE THROUGH MAN

Transcription:

More Than a Song: Made to Worship! Genesis 1-4! In 1643, the English Parliament an assembly of 120 ministers and 30 laymen and commissioned them with the task of restructuring the official Church of England. Known as the Westminster Assembly of Divines, the council was called to Westminster Cathedral in London where they met for several years to produce a new form of church government and a confession of faith. Some of the documents coming out of the assembly are some of the most famous in church history.! One of these documents was known as the Westminster Shorter Catechism and was used for the purpose of teaching children and others the basic doctrines of the Christian faith. The word catechism comes from the word catechesis which referred to the practice of teaching the faith to new believers.! The Westminster Shorter Catechism itself is composed of 107 various questions and answers. The first 12 questions concern God as Creator. Questions 13-20 deal with sin and the fallen state of man. Questions 21-38 concern Christ as man s Redeemer and the benefits that flow from redemption. The next set of questions, 39-84, discuss the Ten Commandments. Questions 85-97 teach concerning the baptism and the Lord s Supper. The final set of questions, 98-107, teach and explain the Lord s prayer.! The very first question that the catechism asks sets the tone for its remainder. In fact, it asks the most important question that people are asking all across the world from a variety of cultural backgrounds and upbringings.! Westminster Shorter Catechism - What is the chief end of man? Man s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.! Nothing in your life is more important than your possession of a personal, living, vibrant relationship with God. Your relationship with God is called worship, and nothing is more important than worship.!

You have been created for the purpose of worship and bringing glory to God. Your very existence is evidence of a loving Creator who is to be your sole ambition in this life.! Worship is central in the life of the church because worship is central in the life of the Christian. The church is the redeemed fellowship of believers who have been set apart to worship and declare the truth of Jesus Christ.! John MacArthur - Nothing is more sorely needed in the church today than a renewed emphasis on worship. Sadly, the prevailing winds seem to be blowing exactly the opposite direction.! A.W. Tozer - Worship is the missing jewel in modern evangelicalism. We re organized; we work; we have our agendas. We have almost everything, but there s one thing that the churches, even the gospel churches, do not have: that is the ability to worship. We are not cultivating the art of worship. It s the one shining gem that is lost to the modern church, and I believe that we ought to search for this until we find it.! Worship is the ultimate priority of the believer and the sole motivation for everything in this life. Since this is true, it is crucial that we have a good grasp on what worship really is.! When we consider a subject like the worship of God, we are overwhelmed with the vastness of it. And perhaps what is most overwhelming is not so much the vastness of worship as a subject, but the shallowness of our own experience with it.! Allen P. Ross - What makes the task of defining worship difficult is not only that the Bible includes so many things but also that its essential features were progressively revealed to and through various groups of believers over the centuries.! If we want to carefully study this subject, it will require us tracing worship through the pages of Scripture in order to lay hold of it truth and identify those principles that remain constant for worship in the church today.! Some of the forms may have changed, but principles have not.!

Worship is more than a song; it is more than a sermon; it is more than a service. Worship is the loving response of one s heart and total life to the saving grace and matchless glory of the Lord Jesus Christ.! Worship - from the word worth-ship and is also from which we get the words worth and worthy! Worship is a subject declaring the value and worth of an object.! The story of the Bible is the story of covenant, the story of how God has worked in ages past to form a people for Himself. We affirm this each time we come to our Bible and read from the Old Testament or the New Testament, for the word testament simply means covenant.! In the beginning, God created man for the purpose of worship and bringing God glory. Adam s disobedience plunged the entire human race into the depths of sin, rendering the worship of God an impossibility unless God Himself intervene. God s intervention is His grace, His covenant, the actions that He Himself has taken to save man and enable man to worship.! God s relationship with man has always been on the basis of covenant. God establishes His covenant with man so that man can worship Him and love Him. It is always God who takes the initiative in establishing the covenant, because in his sin and spiritual death, man is not seeking God. Every human being alive right now is worshiping something simply because this is what he has been designed to do. However, in his lostness, man is not worshiping God because his sin has separated him from God.! Isaiah 59:2 - Your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.! There is a longing deep within the heart of a person, and in his lostness, a man will try to fill that void with whatever he can find that he thinks will bring him satisfaction. Whatever he pursues is what he worships.!

God tells us in His Word all that we need to know about how to worship and serve Him. For this reason, every believer must have a biblical theology of worship, one that is informed by Scripture instead of mere preference and personal opinion.! God s people worship Him for who He is and what He has done.! 1. God has created us for the PURPOSE of worship (1:26-28)! Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.! Worship never has been something that was optional to man. God has commanded worship and has been calling His people to worship from the very beginning of time. Jesus said that the Father is seeking true worshipers. And nowhere is this seen any more clearly than in the first chapter of the Bible.! The first chapter of Genesis is foundational for life and faith. It is here that we are given the answer that explains how we got here and why we exist. If we ignore this chapter or try to explain it away as a fabricated myth, we remove ourselves from the foundation. Apart from an understanding that we have been created by God for God, man is left by himself to aimlessly drift through life.! The Bible begins this way, In the beginning God...! Far too many live with the impression that it says, In the beginning man... You are not at the center of the universe. God is, and He alone is worthy of the undiluted, unrivaled, unbridled praise of the created universe.! Before you and I ever existed, God was perfectly sufficient in Himself.! Yet, the Bible says that in the beginning God created. This means that everything that God spoke into existence is for His pleasure, glory, and honor. Creation exists by the Word of God and for the glory of His Word.! John tells us that the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.!

Colossians 1:15-17 - He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities--all things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.! God the Father has seen to it that all praise, glory, and honor be directed to God the Son. The object of our passion and devotion is to be Christ alone. The Who of worship always comes before the How of worship.! By His all-powerful word, God created the universe. The power of God s Word is the theme of this first chapter of our Bible. This is seen in the much repeated phrase, And God said.! 1:3 - And God said, Let there be light, and there was light. (Day 1)! 1:6 - And God said, Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters. (Day 2)! 1:9 - And God said, Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear. (Day 3)! 1:11 - And God said, Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth. (Day 3)! 1:14 - And God said, Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night. (Day 4)! 1:20 - And God said, Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens. (Day 5)! 1:24 - And God said, Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds. (Day 6)! 1:26 - Then God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. (Day 6)!

God created for His own good pleasure. God looked at everything that He created and gave it the unique distinction of being good. God s creation was good because God Himself is good. Man is the crowing point of His creation.! The psalmist acknowledged this in Psalm 8. David says:! Psalm 8:1-9 - O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth! You have set Your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouths of babies and nursing infants, You have established strength because of Your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You care about him? Yet You have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of Your hands; You have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!! In striking contrast to the pagan myths of origins, the faithful in Israel praised God in their hymns for His work in creation.! Psalm 33:8-9 - Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him! For He spoke, and it came to be; He commanded, and it stood firm.! We have been made to worship. It is within our very DNA.! G. Campbell Morgan - Religion is that which binds a man. Every man is bound somewhere, somehow, to a throne, to a government, to an authority, to something that is supreme, to something to which he offers sacrifice, and burns incense, and bends the knee.! God breathed into man the breath of life.! The word breath is significant throughout the Old Testament. It shows that it brings:!

Life! Genesis 2:7 - Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.! Spiritual Understanding! Job 32:8 - But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand.! Functioning Conscience! Proverbs 20:27 - The breath of man is the lamp of the Lord, searching all his innermost parts.! Allen P. Ross - When the Lord imparted his breath of life, he was sharing with people some of his nature, giving them the capacity to represent him on earth. They were then able to communicate with God, enjoy God, obey God, and serve God.! God breathes into Adam the breath of life, meaning that he creates Adam with the capacity to know Him deep in his spirit.! 2. Sin results in a PROBLEM with our worship (3:1-24)! In his lostness, man cannot worship God. He is dead in his trespasses and sins and alienated from the life of God.! You ve heard the phrase worship wars to describe the fighting that has gone on in the church over styles of music. If I never hear the phrase again it will not be too soon.! Warren Wiersbe - The enemy was bold to use the one thing that should bring us together, the worship of God, to pull us apart and keep us at war.! It is merely symptomatic of the greater problem that man has that has corrupted his worship. It is the product of sin and selfishness. Because of sin, man s worship and purpose has been corrupted and the image of God has been distorted in his life.

Though he was made to be a mirror that reflects the image of God to the world, he now only reflects his own sinfulness.! There is a tragic progression in Genesis 3:! Deception (3:1-5)! Eve bought in to the deceptive lies of the serpent; that s what Satan does he loves nothing more than to deceive us in order that he might prevent God from being glorified in our lives.! Satan always seeks to undermine the worship of God and thereby desires it for himself.! This is seen in the way he tempted Jesus in Matthew 4.! Disobedience (3:6)! Eve was deceived by the serpent; Adam sinned with open eyes. He demonstrates willful disobedience. In so doing, both Adam and Eve made the decision to turn away from God and go their own way.! Disruption (3:7-8)! Up until this point, however long it may have been, Adam had enjoyed uninterrupted fellowship and worship in the presence of the Lord God. His walk with God, however, is now disrupted by his disobedience.! What do they do in response to this disruption? They come up with their own fig leaf religion. They run and hide from God.! Distance (3:9-13)! By asking, Where are you, God was convicting Adam s conscience and showing him where his sin and disobedience had brought him. It had put distance between him and God.! So many people are not living lives of worship because they are in hiding. They are running from the One who made them and filling the void in their souls with substitutes.!

An idol is nothing more than a God substitute.! Someone has well said, Sin always takes you further than you want to go, keeps you longer than you want to stay, and costs you more than you want to pay.! Sin always affects our ability to worship.! Psalm 66:18 - If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear.! Isaiah 1:15 - When you spread out your hands, I will hide My eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not hear. Your hands are full of blood.! Death (3:14-24)! God had warned Adam that they day he asserted his own will above God s will and disobeyed God, he would die. Although Adam physically lived to be 930, he died spiritually the very moment he sinned.! The moment that Adam sinned, he died spiritually. No longer could he walk with God in the garden.! Genesis 3:8 - And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.! The garden of Eden was much more than a lush garden. The fact that sinners were not allowed to stay in this special place reveals that there was something far more important than its beauty. There was a spiritual dynamic.! The garden was the place where the Lord God Himself walked in the midst of His creation. It was the very special place where Adam and Eve had immediate access to the presence of God in a perfect environment before their disobedience.! It was the holy of holies, the place of God s presence on earth.!

Man is created in the image of God, created with the capacity to know God in his spirit and placed in the perfect environment, but because of sin, that image is now distorted and lost. Adam and Eve were forced out of Eden.! The problems in man s worship life becomes very apparent in Genesis 4 with the account of Cain and Abel. Cain represents man approaching God as man sees fit, without atonement.! Cain becomes the father of all false religion.! 3. God has given us a PATHWAY so we can worship (4:1-16)! Before sin entered the world, worship was pure adoration and enjoyment of God. After sin entered the world, worship requires a process of gaining access into the presence of God as a new creation. Man needs a pathway back into the presence of God.! Before He expels Adam and Eve from the garden, God clothes them with animal skins. An innocent substitute had to take their place, its blood was shed, so that their nakedness could be covered. From this moment forward, blood atonement is always a requirement in worship.! This is even more clearly seen in chapter 4 as God accepts the worship of Abel while rejecting the worship of Cain. False religion is essentially coming to God on your own terms instead of coming to Him on His terms.! A.W. Tozer - It is important to understand that nobody can devise their own pattern of worship or worship God any way they please. The pleasure here belongs to God alone. The One who created us to worship Him also has decreed how we shall worship Him He accepts worship only when it is pure and when it flows from a heart under the influence of the Holy Spirit.! There is a scarlet pathway from the garden to the cross and from the cross to the culmination of the ages.! This is further expanded in the Levitical system of sacrifices:!

Leviticus 26:11-12 - I will make My dwelling among you, and My soul shall not abhor you. And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be My people.! It is so very easy for worship to become routine and dry. It can become man-centered where a vision of the glory of God is lost. When this is the case, we must recapture as a church what the Bible says true worship is.! 2 Corinthians 4:6 - For God, who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.! 2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.! He is made a new creation in Christ so he can worship.! When immediate access to God came to an end because of sin, God provided a way for His people to enjoy mediated access to Him. We come to Him through the blood of our Substitute.! The only legitimate way back to God is through His provision of redemption. People who were once alienated from the life of God because of their sin enjoy restored relationship with their Creator through faith in the finished work of Christ on their behalf.! Ephesians 2:12-13 - Remember you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.! This is the worshiper s pathway.
