WELCOME AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR DISCIPLESHIP CALL TO CONFESSION Stuart Gordon
PRAYER OF CONFESSION Eternal God, Creator of all that is and Lord of all that shall ever be, You led people to this land, and out of conflict and trial, created in us a love of liberty and a hunger for justice. We have often failed You by neglecting the poor and standing in the way of freedom for those who have no voice. Forgive the pride that overlooks our nation s sins or seeks to justify any real injustice. Have mercy, O God, upon the heart of this land! Make us a people faithful to our founding principles, committed always to liberty and justice for all. Raise up within our midst a right patriotism, that sees and seeks this nation s good; through Jesus Christ our Lord. (A moment for silent confession.) Peter J. Wilhousky Mine eyes have seen glory of the coming of the Lord; He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored; He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword: His truth is marching on. Glory! Glory! Hallelujah! His truth is marching on! I have seen Him in the watchfires of a hundred circling camps; they have builded Him an altar in the evening dews and damps; I can read His righteous sentence in the dim and flaring lamps, His day is marching on! In the beauty of the lilies, Christ was born across the sea, with a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me: As He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free, while God is marching on. *PRESENTATION AND RESPONSE Doxology OLD HUNDREDTH *HYMN 337 (Stanza 4) My Country, Tis of Thee AMERICA Our fathers God, to Thee, author of liberty, to Thee we sing. The American poet and abolitionist Julia Ward Howe wrote the words to the equally iconic Battle Hymn of the Republic after visiting a Union army camp in Virginia in 1862. These works have since been performed at many significant state and religious occasions, and their inclusion in today s service is a nod to the right patriotism of which the Prayer of Confession speaks.
