Our History Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, or OLC, was founded in 1911 to serve Polish immigrants to Jersey City. Today, OLC is growing and changing as it seeks to serve all those who now live in our neighborhood. The church takes its name from a city in Poland that houses a cherished icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A copy of that icon is centrally located in our historic church. 100 th Anniversary Festivities Dear Parishioners, Activities surrounding our 100 th Anniversary celebrations continue. When I returned from a few vacation days, I discovered an e-mail indicating that the promised re-dedication of Sussex Street was cancelled because the new street sign was not ready. I made an announcement to that effect after the 10:00 am Mass this past Sunday. However, to my surprise, the city did install the sign late last week and we did have a re-dedication ceremony on Sunday at about 11:45 am. I was very pleased to see that the city removed the Sussex Street sign and replaced it with the Our Lady of Czestochowa Way, street sign. During Sunday s ceremonies Councilman Brennan presented the parish with a Proclamation honoring the parish as we begin to celebrate our 100 th Anniversary. The Proclamation recognizes the long history of the parish and especially the tremendous contributions the parish has made in service to the Catholic and local Community. I would like to thank the mayor and city council for this re-dedication and particularly Councilman Fulop for his efforts. Additionally, Councilman-at-large Brennan was present for both last week s and this week s activities. Corrections: Last week s bulletin inadvertently did not include Melanie Zazula and Tom Savitsky as members of the kitchen crew. In addition, the altar flowers were donated by the Bromirski Funeral Home, not by the Senior Citizens. CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE While the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former USSR endured decades of communist oppression, the Church suffered grave wounds to its spiritual life and pastoral capacity. For generations, Church leaders and Catechists were killed or imprisoned, and churches, monasteries and seminaries were closed or destroyed. On September 11 th and 12 th, there will be a second collection to aid the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. Your donations will help fund projects in 28 countries that include the formation and training of priests and religious, the development of catechetical and social programs, as well as providing ongoing support of the Church's charitable works in this area of the world. Collection envelopes are available at the rear of the Church. Your generosity is appreciated. BAPTISM GATHERING TO REMEMBER The fifth component of Baptism at OLC takes place over a period of months and years. In fact, it never ends until we meet the Lord face to face. We gather each Sunday at Mass to grow in our Christian faith, to remember who we are as followers of Christ and to remember whose children we have become through baptism. We also gather at particular times to assist parents in their responsibility to be examples of faith to inspire their child. One such Gathering to Remember involves a Sunday Mass celebrated by one of the Assistant Bishops of Newark followed by an informal reception. This Mass and reception reminds parents that their children, and all the baptized, are part of a Church community far larger than any one parish. God s Church embraces the world. Please Note: Those who wish to be part of Baptism at OLC must be part of the parish. Please visit our website at www.olcjc.org for more information on parish registration. SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS Reflect on today s readings. Prepare for next Sunday. Many of our parishioners believe that it is important to financially support their parish. Thank you for living your financial commitment. Your support helps us to achieve our weekly collection goal of $6,000 per Sunday. For the weekend of August 28th & August 29th there were a total of 367 people who attended Mass. The total weekend collection came to $5,199 (of that amount $2,136 came from parish members making their contributions electronically through Parish Pay). This amount is $801 BELOW our weekly goal of $6,000 per Sunday. We appreciate all those who act as good stewards of their time and treasure by joining us for Mass in their faithful giving for the collections; and we ask that more parishioners and visitors be responsible stewards supporting the parish. ~ BODY, MIND AND SOUL ~ Let your creative spirit nourish and relax you Drawing and Painting Classes for Adults Offered by Joyce Zielaznicki 4 week program starts Monday, September 13th - Mail registration deadline 9/7/10 with payment payable to Joyce Zielaznicki, 139 St. Pauls Ave., Jersey City, NJ 07306 Class Schedule: Monday & Wednesday 7:00-9:00 pm in the Church Hall Cost: $200.00 for 8 sessions includes art supplies FR. PRAYER INTENTIONS For Health Reasons: Margi Rossi Please contact us at bulletin@olcjc.org or stop by the rectory if you have an intention you would like added to the prayer list. STEWARDSHIP Jesus tells the crowd that only those who renounce all of their possessions can be His disciples. Is He truly asking us to give up everything? Perhaps instead He is trying to help us see that everything we think we own is really a gift from God. Good stewards know that and strive to use those gifts accountably.
