Stations of the Cross The Stations of the Cross, or Way of the Cross, is also called the Via Dolorosa, the Way of Sorrows, or simply The Way. It depicts the final hours, or Passion, of Jesus. The tradition of walking the Stations of the Cross began with St. Francis of Assisi and expanded throughout the Roman Catholic Church in the medieval period. It has been celebrated at St. Andrew's for a number of years and, while it may be done at any time, it has always been done at St. Andrew's on Good Friday. Since 1994 the Hilton churches have combined together at St. Andrew's for Good Friday services. While Charlie Weiss participated in most St. Andrew's services for almost all his adult life as: crucifier, acolyte, lay reader, and chalicer, the Good Friday service was his favorite. When the Stations of the Cross service supplanted the traditional "Seven Last Words" meditations, Charlie took it upon himself to build the fourteen stations. They were originally made by mounting pictures of the fourteen events on wooden crosses he lovingly made. After his death last year it was apparent that one of the most appropriate memorials for him would be to replace the pictures with professionally carved images of each of the Passion scenes. These images were made in Catalonia, Spain, and the new Stations of the Cross were dedicated on April 5, 2009 and used for the first time on Good Friday, April 10, 2009. The First Station - Jesus is condemned to death People: Because by your holy cross you have redeemed the Reader: God did not spare his own Son. People: But delivered him up for us all.

The Second Station - Jesus takes up his cross Reader: The Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. People: For the transgressions of my people was he stricken. People: But delivered him up for us all. The Third Station - Jesus falls the first time Reader: Surely he has borne our griefs People: And carried our sorrows.

The Fourth Station - Jesus meets His Afflicted Mother Reader: A sword will pierce your own soul also: People: And fill your heart with bitter pain. People: But delivered him up for us all. The Fifth Station - The Cross is laid on Simon of Cyrene Reader: Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me: People: Cannot be my disciple.

The Sixth Station - A Woman wipes the face of Jesus Reader: Restore us, O Lord God of hosts: People: Show us the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved. The Seventh Station - Jesus falls the second time Reader: But as for me, I am a women and no man: People: Scorned and despised by the people.

The Eighth Station - Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem Reader: Those who sowed with tears: People: Will reap with songs of joy. The Ninth Station - Jesus falls the third time Reader: He was led like a lamb to slaughter: People: And like a sheep that stood before its shearers mute, so he opened not his mouth.

The Tenth Station - Jesus is stripped of his garments Reader: They gave me gall to eat: People: And when I was thirsty they gave me vinegar to drink. The Eleventh Station - Jesus is nailed to the cross Reader: They pierce my hand and feet. People: They stare and gloat over me.

The Twelfth Station - Jesus dies on the cross Reader: Christ for us became obedient unto death: People: Even death upon a cross. The Thirteenth Station - The body of Jesus is placed in the arms of his mother Reader: Her tears ran down her cheeks: People: And she had none to comfort her.

The Fourteenth Station - Jesus is laid in the tomb Reader: You will not abandon me to the grave: People: Nor let your holy one see corruption.
