November 2016 LIVING SAVIOR Lutheran Church LIVING TODAY FOR ETERNITY GIVE THANKS TO GOD AND TRUST IN HIM ALWAYS As we begin the month of Thanksgiving, we also enter the month of elections in which our local, state and national leaders will be chosen. When we cast our votes we are putting our trust in the candidates for whom we vote. Although we would like to believe that they will keep all their campaign promises, we know that is not true by experience and for many practical reasons not possible. Very often we are disappointed (or disgusted) in one way or the other by the ones who make their way into office. At the same time, however, the Bible tells us that we are to show respect for and submit to the governing authorities (Romans 13). How can this be done when they seem, at times, to be so far from doing God s will? Well, the best way to do that is to remember that our greatest authority is God himself. We are not to put our ultimate trust in princes (or presidents), but in God, who is our Creator, Redeemer and Sustainer (Psalm 146). And just for a moment, let us turn our hearts and minds from all the political contention to the wonder of all that God has done, even in the seemingly little things, and give thanks. Recently, I came across this child s prayer: Dear God, I didn t think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset Tuesday night. That was really cool. Thanks! May this be a small reminder to all of us that God is totally in control, so we can trust in him always! MUSIC NOTES I will sing of your strength, O Lord, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. Psalm 59:16 What a wonderful celebration of the 499 th anniversary of the REFORMATION! There s nothing like brass for a celebratory occasion Brass gets one s attention for announcements, for joy, for emphasizing, for the fight songs and the crisp tones. It can be for starting off a marching band, for cheering after a touchdown, to get the folks excited, to get their attention with a fanfare, or standing at the graveside of a Veteran with the solemn playing of taps. We give thanks to God for our choir and musicians. Special thanks to the Brass Boys, Paul Downing and Eric Yeager! A more somber yet extremely joyful observance will be on ALL SAINTS DAY which will be celebrated on Sunday, November 6 th. Those dear to you who have died in the faith since last November will be remembered in this service through the tolling of the chimes and in prayers of thanksgiving for their lives and faith they shared with us on this earth. For Finishing Well: Family, we give thanks to God!! Sunday, November 13 th is an exciting day! Pastor David Cecil will be with us as our guest preacher. Pastor Bailes will be the liturgist. We pray for open hearts and minds as David comes to us representing POBLO. (People of the Book Lutheran Outreach). This is a 23 year old organization that ministers to Christian Muslims and those Muslims seeking the One True Faith. Our LWML has been supporters of this critically important outreach for several years as POBLO ministers to this growing population in the Dallas area, particularly. Pastor Cecil will answer questions and enlighten us with information during Bible Study. Don t miss this!! Be thankful! Finally we are at the last Sunday after Pentecost with the Last Sunday of the Church Year also known as Christ the King Sunday on November 20 th. At this service we will have the opportunity to present our pledge cards of our time, talents, and treasures. We will receive the cards prior to this Sundaybe on the lookout for them as well. Be in prayer regarding your commitment. Finishing Well: Forever We give thanks to God!! THANKSGIVING EVE service on Wednesday the 23 rd,will be at 6:30 p.m.. Please schedule this one hour of time and attend this once a year service. It is well worth it. Rejoice and Give Thanks! A yummy Pie Fellowship follows the service. Sign up sheet for pies will be posted. November 27 th is the FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT! Blue altar paraments appear! The Advent Wreath appears! We are at the point of housecleaning our hearts in preparation for the celebration of Christ s coming as a baby to change the world and each of us. How we need that! Are You Ready? Pledge cards will be received this Sunday also in case you weren t able to be present on the 20 th. Now is a good time to say we give thanks to God for Trish Wunderlich and the team of Altar Guild attendants who keep that area appropriate and liturgically correct and also prepare the communion elements for every service all year long! These are truly dedicated stealth servants. WEDNESDAY NIGHT ADVENT SERVICES WILL focus on a favorite Christmas hymn composed by Martin Luther entitled FROM HEAVEN ABOVE TO EARTH I COME. It is a mere 15 verses long! During the 4 Wednesdays, We will meditate on Hope, Love, Peace, and Life as illustrated in this hymn. CHOIR is practicing Advent/Christmas music on Wednesdays at 7:15. Join us NOW if you want to sing for a short term commitment! Of course, you would be welcome year round as well. The Worship Committee is considering re-introducing the Passing of the Peace. Placement in the service is tricky. It would be a simple peace be with you with a handshake in place, with the persons just in front, in back and to your side. We welcome your comments. THANK YOU to all who participated in Clergy Appreciation Month!
