NOVEMBER 27 2016 PASTOR S COMMENTS. Advent has begun and we once again begin a Liturgical Year of waiting in anticipation of the coming of our Savior. This new Church year begins as the old one ended, having us look at the end times and allow ourselves to reflect on the need for a Savior. The image of the world coming to an end is a reminder that we face endings throughout our lives. In our individual worlds we can face a loss of our financial security, our marriage, our health, our life in dying. These are terrifying experiences not only because of the physical suffering they may entail, but because the tribulation may lead to despair about the meaning of life itself. This Advent Season of waiting invites us to once again trust that the Lord is coming to speak his message of hope, new life and promise into our particular life situation. We are not alone and as the candles of our Advent Wreath grow brighter each weekend throughout this four week season, we trust that our difficult situation is not the end but rather an opportunity to meet the Lord who always dwells with us! We have completed the two formal Parish Consultation Sessions for On Mission Reorganization. If you were not able to come to either of our sessions or if you came and still have a number of questions you would like to have answered, we are going to offer a special Parish Consultation Session where the On Mission Team from our parish and I will be available to answer questions. It will also be an opportunity to fill out one of the response forms from the Diocese and we will send then in for you so that more of our parishioners can be heard through this process. Plan to stay after the 10:00 a.m. Mass next Sunday in church and we will meet from 11:15 a.m. until about noon. Plan to take advantage of this Consultation opportunity. The total from this collection will be listed in next week s bulletin. JANUARY LOTTERY The tickets for our January Lottery are on sale. As usual the cost will be $5.00, which will give you a chance to win $2500 in prize money for the 31 days of January. Each ticket will have a three digit number on it and the winners will be based on the first drawing of the Pick Three Evening drawing of the PA Lottery. These tickets make great stocking stuffers for Christmas. Please take some tickets to sell. The numbers of all tickets taken need to be recorded so that we know where they are. Spread the word about our Lottery. OPLATKI AVAILABLE DURING ADVENT Oplatki (Christmas Wafers) is available in the back of church. The donation is $1 for four wafers.

1st SUNDAY OF ADVENT THE GIVING TREE The annual Giving Tree is now up and bears the ornaments listing information on 50 students from Arsenal School and 50 students from Woolslair School who are need of some gifts to make Christmas special for them. There are two ornaments for each of the students, one for winter clothes or boots and one for a fun gift. If you can help with this outreach effort, please take the ornaments and purchase the gifts and return them by December 11 th. They can be returned under the tree at the right front of the church. ADULT EDUCATION CLASSES There will be two Adult Education Classes offered during Advent. This Tuesday November 29 th and Tuesday December 6 th Deacons Richard and Jonathan will present insights on the Infancy Narratives that appear in the Gospel accounts of St. Matthew and St. Luke. All adults of the parish and guests are invited to participate in this preparation for the Birth of Christ. The Classes will be held at 7:15 p.m. in the Lower Social Hall of the church. FAMILY CENTERED RELIGIOUS ED Next Sunday will be the December Session of our Family Centered Religious Education Program. It will take place after the 10:00 a.m. Mass. All young people K 8th who are not in Catholic School are expected to be part of this Program. After the 10:00 a.m. Mass the young people will go with their teachers to the classrooms in the Parish House and the parents and guardians will meet in the Lower Social Hall of the Church. YOUTH GROUP PROJECT This Sunday, November 27 th, the youth group (any youth grades 8th -12th) are invited after the 10:00 a.m. Mass to Gretchen Okunewick s house to make cookies for the Cookie Mall and also to have a meeting to discuss future projects. If any youth are interested in being part of the Group, please contact Gretchen Okunewick at gokunewick@att.netor call Bro. Jonathan at the Parish Office. ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT We congratulate Margaret Mann and Harlie Stazer who were awarded Highest Honor in the first quarter of the school year at Oakland Catholic High School. CEMETERY NEWS With the On Mission reorganization the 116 Parish Cemeteries will be taken out of Parish oversight and be placed under a new Parish Cemetery Association in July of 2017. That change will most likely result in an increase in the cost or the purchase of graves in all the 116 cemeteries. Our St. Augustine Parish Cemetery is currently about $400 less per grave than those of the Catholic Cemetery Association. If you are considering the purchase of some gravesites in St. Augustine Cemetery you would benefit from purchasing them in the next eight months. If you would like further information, please give a call to St. Augustine Cemetery at 412-821-3309 and Pat or Dan Dobies will be happy to answer any of your questions or assist you in the purchase of a gravesite. CHRISTMAS FLOWER MEMORIAL If you would like to remember your loved ones (living or deceased) you may do so. Please place your donation in the envelope marked Christmas Flower Offering (or use a plain white envelope) with the name of the person(s) you wish to remember. Bring it to the parish office or drop it in the collection basket by December 20th so we can have the names listed for our Christmas bulletin.

PRAYER REQUEST BOX You are reminded that the Prayer Request box is available on the table in the back of church to receive any requests you would like to lay before the altar each week. The women of the Rosary Society, as one of their ministries, have been taking those prayer requests on the first Sunday of each month and dividing them up among their members and personally pray for those listed on the intention sheets. PRAYER FOR ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE Father of Mercy, as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive!, endow us with your gifts of collaboration, courage and compassion. Help us to fulfill the mission of Jesus and His Church through vibrant parishes and effective ministries. Raise up selfless, energetic leaders to serve the Church in fidelity and with care. May we, the Church of Pittsburgh in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Lawrence and Washington Counties, be sustained and strengthened by your grace. Help us to learn Jesus, to love Jesus and to live Jesus.Hear this prayer and grant it through Jesus Christ our Lord, with the help of our dear Blessed Mother, under the mantle of her love, Amen. GLORY TO GOD Glory, glory, glory to God in the highest heaven. And on earth, peace on earth, peace to people of good will. EUCHARISTIC ADORATION WEDNESDAYS In the past there was always at least one person present in the Parish House Chapel during the Eucharistic Adoration Time from 9:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. each Wednesday. Recently we have noticed that there are periods of time during the day when there is no one in the Chapel. Hopefully we can once again have someone in Chapel throughout the Adoration time. Late morning and midafternoon seem to be lull periods. You are encouraged to take advantage of this day and time for adoration and praise of our Eucharistic Lord. SCHOLARSHIP ENTRANCE EXAM Oakland Catholic High School is offering the Scholarship Entrance Exam on Saturday, December 3, 2016. Merit Based Scholarships are awarded to incoming ninth grade students receiving the top scores on the exam. Register on line today at oaklandcatholic.org/ admissions ENVELOPES IN PEWS You will notice that there are Offering Envelopes in each of the pews. These are not there to replace the Offertory Envelopes that are mailed to the homes but are made available for visitors as well as any parishioner putting loose money in the collection basket. Any loose money placed in these envelopes will be deposited as Parish Share and therefore will be tax exempt in our future Parish Share Assessment. Please spread the word about the availability of these envelopes. A special thanks to all who have participated in parish consultation sessions for ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE! The last of 329 meetings being held across our diocese are taking place this week. If you weren t able to attend a parish session, go online at OnMissionChurchAlive.org to watch these videos, download the presentation and take the survey. Together we will be the hands, feet and heart of the Body of Christ serving His people. MASS INTENTIONS FOR 2017 Mass Intentions can be scheduled at the parish office.
