(page 1) Elisha Helps a Widow WHAT S THE POINT? Have you ever been in a desperate situation? Maybe you have faced financial problems, family problems or health issues. Have you ever felt like you had nowhere to turn? Psalm 46:1 says, God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in times of trouble. He is the One who meets us in the desperate situation and is our Helper. He is right there when we need Him. BIBLE CONNECTION 2 Kings 4:1-7 (pages 389-390) CHARACTER WORD Helpfulness To give aid or useful assistance to another person In today s story, God helped a woman who was in a desperate situation. Her husband was dead, she owed money and she did not have enough food to feed her two sons. God sent Elisha to help her. Not only did God provide her food, but He gave her over and above what she could have imagined. Psalm 28:7 says, The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him. We can trust God to help us and keep us safe. He is worthy of our praise. We can rejoice because we have a God whom we can trust to help us. TEACHING OBJECTIVE I can trust God to help me. They are watching everything you do as you lead. If you are excited, they are excited. The kids will learn to worship by imitation. If you aren t an expressive worshiper they will not be expressive either. Pray and ask God to help you to be the best kind of worship leader you can be. 10-15 10-15 Minutes Building relationships in Surf Teams; introducing today s lesson Use the following conversation prompts to get to know the kids in your surf team and to introduce today s lesson. Today s character word is helpfulness. What does helpfulness mean? Share an example of a way you may be able to help in the following situations: A child has fallen and has hurt himself Another person is sad or lonely You meet a person who is hungry A friend is unprepared for a test that is taking place tomorrow Has there been a time that you needed help? Did anyone help you? Guide clubbers to locate and mark today s Bible Connection and Memory Link in their Bibles so they can find the pages quickly as directed in the session.

MEMORY LINK Teaching a Bible verse to clubbers; helping them to memorize the verse Focus on the Bible Today s character word is helpfulness. The Bible is full of stories about how God helps people. Can you think of any stories in the Bible about God helping people? (Allow for answers.) Today s Bible story is about God helping a woman who had no money. The Bible story is found in the book of 2 Kings, which is in the Old Testament. Focus on Today s Memory Link Today s memory link is from the longest book in the Bible, Psalm. The verse tells us where our best source of help is. Who is our source of help? (God) Turn in your KBC Study Bible to page 591 and let s read Psalm 46:1 aloud together. God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. What does refuge mean? (Refuge is a safe place where we cannot be harmed.) God is always with us. We can look to Him when we are in trouble. We can trust God to help us. Option 1 FIND THE WORD Index cards, beach pails Prepare Write each word of the memory link on a separate card and place in a beach pail. Allow the first clubber to search in the beach pail for the first word of the verse, then place it on the table or floor. The pail is then passed to the next clubber who searches for the second word of the verse. Repeat until the verse is completed. You may want to use a timer and repeat this activity to see how fast your group can complete the verse. Option 2 - PAT PALMS 10-15 Ask the clubbers to stand in a circle with hands out in front of them with palms up. Instruct the first clubber to say the first word of the memory link then pat the hand of the person on their right. The second clubber says the second word of the memory link and pats the hand of the person to their right. Continue around the circle as the kids say a word and pat the palm of the person next to them. Repeat several times, reversing the direction each time. (page 2) Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. (KBC Study Bible pg. 591) You may want to use the following acrostic to help the children retain the meaning of being helpful: H - Heart to assist or serve those in need E - Encourage with your words and presence L - Listen to the one in need P - Pray with and for the person in need Be helpful by participating in all of the activities during Beach Club. Avoid talking to the kids or other leaders during important times like worship or memory link or Bible connection. By being mindful of these simple things, you will be helping the kids have the best opportunity to hear the truths and worship.

BIBLE CONNECTION Teaching today s character word through a gospel-centered Bible story 10-15 Introduce the Story Have you ever been in a desperate situation and needed help? Maybe your family has had money problems. Maybe someone you love has been very sick. Maybe your parents fight and are getting a divorce. Have you ever felt like you had nowhere to turn? Psalm 46:1 says, God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. He is the One who meets us in the desperate situation and is our Helper. He is right there when we need Him. In today s story, God helped a woman who was in a desperate situation. Her husband was dead, she owed money, and she did not have enough food to feed her two sons. God sent Elisha to help her. Not only did God provide her food, but He gave her over and above what she could have imagined. 2 Kings 4:1-2 Invite the clubbers to turn to 2 Kings 4:1-7 on page 389-390 and follow along as you read the passage aloud. Talk About It The widow was desperate. When her husband died, she was left with debt she could not pay. Her creditors demanded she pay what was owed or they would sell her two sons into slavery to pay the debt. What was she going to do? In those days women did not have many opportunities to work. The law of the land then permitted a bill collector to take children as slaves if parents did not pay their bills. What could she possibly do to keep this from happening? The widow went to the right place for help. She went to a person who knew and obeyed God. Elisha asked the woman what she had. She told him she had nothing but a little jar of oil. (page 3) You may choose to allow volunteers to act out the Bible story as you read it from the Bible. You could even allow extra time in the surf teams for each team to act out the story within their group. Do all you can to help kids stay focused on the Bible story. You don t have to call on every child who wants to answer or ask a question. Keep discussions and questions to a minimum during the large group teaching time. Remind kids they can ask their surf team leader questions following the Bible story. 2 Kings 4:3-4 Invite clubbers to look at verses 3 and 4 as you read aloud. Elisha instructed her to borrow all the jars she could from the neighbors. Then she was to go inside with her sons and pour oil from her jar into the other jars. This must have sounded like strange advice to her. She only had a little oil. What could she do with all those containers? Let s read verse 5 to see if she followed Elisha s instruction. 2 Kings 4:5-7 She followed Elisha s instructions exactly and the results were amazing! When she poured from her jar, the oil multiplied. Her sons helped by bringing jar after jar. She kept pouring until all the jars were filled. She rushed to Elisha to tell him the news. He told her, Go, sell the oil and pay your debts; and you and your sons will live on the rest. Wow! God helped her in an amazing way! He took what little she had and multiplied it!

Memory Link Connection So, who can you trust to help you? (God!) I will give you a few situations when you might need help. Let s say the memory link together aloud as an answer to the situation. (page 4) You are sad or lonely... God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 Your family needs food or clothing... God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 Your parents are going through a divorce... God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 A loved one is very sick or has died... God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 Gospel Connection God has even provided help for our sin problem. Romans 3:23 says, All have sinned. Sin is the wrong we do. Sin makes our life difficult and separates us from a relationship with God. We cannot have real peace and joy in our life because of sin. John 3:16 says that God loved us so much that He sent His Son, Jesus, to pay the price for our sin. We can start a relationship with God when we ASK Him to forgive our sin. We must BELIEVE that Jesus paid the price for our sins when He died on the cross and rose again three days later. We must CHOOSE to follow Him and make Him the boss of our life. That means we do what He says and obey His commands. Invite children wanting to know more about becoming a Christian to move to the designated area to meet with a leader one-on-one. Application/Transition When we are in a relationship with God through Jesus Christ we have a Mighty Helper! When we are stuck and don t know what to do, God is there! Just like the widow, when you need help you can go to someone and ask for help. God will use others to help you like He used Elisha to help the widow. God wants to use you to help others. Always be on the lookout to see how you can be a helper. Gospel Tip Be sure and record each profession of faith (POF) and input them in KOMS. Make a plan to contact the parents of the child who makes a POF. Explain to the parents what you said at Beach Club about salvation that caused their child to make a decision. Follow up again the last week of Beach Club to see if the child has talked about his decision with his parents, church leaders or others.

SURF TEAM TIME Connecting with kids in small groups; applying today s Bible Connection and Character Word Memory Link cards, Hang 10 pages, index cards, pens 5-10 (page 5) Gospel Connection Before you begin, ask if there are any clubbers who would like to talk with the Bible Connection Leader about praying to ask Jesus to become their forever friend. If so, let them go to the designated area. Today s Lesson What questions do you have about today s story? What was the widow s problem? (No money to pay debt and fear of creditors taking her sons as slaves.) Who is our Mighty Helper? (God!) Who did God use to help the widow? (Elisha) What are some ways God can use you to help others who have needs at home, school, or in your neighborhood? How have you been helped by others? Pray Let children share prayer requests and write them on the index cards. Give the kids a choice to give their card/request to another clubber in their surf team who will promise to pray for them this week. Thank You, God, for helping us. Thank You that we can trust You to always help us like You helped the widow in our Bible story. In Jesus name, Amen. Use the Bible Give each child a memory link card. Review today s memory link and character word. Guide kids to use cards to mark today s story in their KBC Study Bibles. Lead them to highlight today s memory link. Hang 10 Pages Give each child a Hang 10 page. Challenge kids to hang out with God 10 minutes each day by praying and reading the Bible, using the Hang 10 page as a guide. Encourage kids to bring back their Hang 10 pages next week. Let s look at Day 1 together. Who would like to read Isaiah 41:10 on page 768? When we remember God is our helper, we have no reason to fear because He is our God and will make us stronger and will help us. The Bible says that the Mighty Creator of all things is holding us up with His righteous right hand. Thank You, God, for being my helper. Thank You for being strong. In Jesus name, Amen.

MAKE IT STICK - REVIEW GAME Playing a game to review today s Bible Connection and Character Word Option 1 - HELP MY NEIGHBOR Blindfolds, bean bags Guide each team to line up single file. The first person in each line is blindfolded. The second person in line helps the blindfolded person to the bean bag that has been placed several feet away. The blindfolded person picks up the bean bag as directed by the helper. The two then hurry back to the line together. The first team to have their pair return is permitted to answer the review question. Repeat until all questions have been answered correctly. Option 2 - BALANCE THE VESSEL Bean bags, spatulas, sports cones 5-10 Guide clubbers to line up in teams. Allow the first clubber on each team to balance a bean bag on a spatula as they walk to the cone and back to the line. The child who returns to the starting point first gets to answer a review question. If the clubber drops the bean bag, they may pick it up and continue where they are. Repeat, allowing all the clubbers to participate or until all the questions have been answered. (page 6) If you are having difficulty with kid participation, survey your approach to the game. If you approach games with enthusiasm and are interactive and playful with the kids, they will often respond in kind. Also, be prepared and ready to go when it s time to start the review game. Kids can sense when you are not prepared and you may lose their attention, which will delay the start. REVIEW QUESTIONS 1. What is today s memory link?
