YOU HAVE MADE US FOR YOURSELF, O GOD, AND OUR HEARTS ARE RESTLESS UNTIL THEY REST IN YOU [St Augustine, THE CONFESSIONS] John the Baptist was given the mission by God to proclaim the arrival of the Messiah, who turned out to be his relative, Jesus. It is St John who directed people to follow Jesus, and we are the inheritors of that direction. One of the ways in which we have the opportunity to follow Jesus is through devotion to his Sacred Heart. It may seem strange to have a devotion to someone s heart, but just think of times that we see I my dog or something similar on car windows. The heart is the sign of love, and so the Heart of Jesus is the symbol of His wonderful love for us, expressed in His death on Calvary. On the liturgical calendar of the Catholic Church, June is the month dedicated to devotion to the Sacred Heart. Devotion to Jesus Heart as the symbol of His love goes way back to the early days of the Church, but it was emphasized in the 1670 s through revelations Jesus gave to St Margaret Mary Alocoque in France. He asked her to help spread this devotion and make known what He offered to those who practiced this devotion. So, to refresh the minds of those who have already heard them, and to reveal them to those who haven t, here are these 12 promises of Jesus. He promised them to those who would honor His Sacred Heart by practicing this devotion. Ask yourself: are these things that are important to me and my loved ones? How can I arrange to do what He asks of me? [1] I (Jesus) will give them all the graces necessary for their state in life. [2] I will establish peace in their families. [3] I will comfort them in their trials. [4] I will be their secure refuge during life, and, above all, in death. [5] I will shed abundant blessings on all their undertakings. [6] Sinners will find in my Heart an infinite ocean of mercy. [7] Lukewarm souls will become fervent. [8] Fervent souls will rapidly grow in holiness and perfection. [9] I will bless every place where an image of my Heart shall be exposed and honored. [10] I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts. [11] The names of those who promote this devotion will be written in my Heart, never to be blotted out. [12] I promise you, in the excess mercy of my Heart, that my all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Friday of nine consecutive months, the grace of final penitence; they shall not die in disgrace nor without receiving their Sacraments; my Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment. Remember that if you are aware of serious sin which you have not had forgiven through confession, you need to go to confession before receiving Holy Communion. I am sure that any serious follower of Jesus would want to receive all those blessings which He promises those who received Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays. What s the best way for you to receive Holy Communion on nine consecutive First Fridays? Msgr. Dzielak Let God be the strength of your marriage.
